Obituary of John Cornelius

John C. Den Hartog

Services for John Den Hartog, 96, of Mason City and formerly of Pella, who died July 4, 1994 at the I.O.O.F. Home in Mason City, were held July 6 at Van Dyk-Duven Funeral Home.

Interment was in Oakwood Cemetery.

The Rev. Andy Kamphuis officiated at the Services. Music was provided by Eileen Smiley.

Pallbearers were Michael, Jerry, Cornie, and Harold Den Hartog, Eric Glewen, and Francis De Jong.

Mr. Den Hartog was born April 11, 1898 near Pella, the Son of Cornelius and Anna Veen Den Hartog. He attended Lower Grove Country Grade School and Central Academy.

On Feb. 9, 1922, he married Josena De Jong. They farmed northeast of Leighton for six years and then moved into Leighton, where he operated the drug-sundry store in Leighton for 30 years. In 1959, they moved to Pella at which time he was associated with a distributing business for Pella bologna and cookies and later fishing tackle. She preceded him in death on June 28, 1971.

On May 16, 1972, he married Adrianna Van Wyk De Jong. They lived at Pella Manor and spent winters in Florida. She preceded him in death on Dec. 17, 1972.

On March 18, 1977, he married Sophia Vos Van Roekel. They lived at Pella Manor and then Hilltop Manor. She preceded him in death on Feb. 6, 1991.

He was a non-resident member of First Reformed Church in Pella.

Besides his wives, he was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers, William, Egbert, Simon and Henry, and one sister, Mrs Arie (Hilda) Klyn.

He is survived by one son and his wife, Raymond and Jean of Clear Lake, one daughter, Mrs Kenneth (Betty) Glewen of Cedar Grove, Wis.; six grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, three stepchildren Mrs. Edwin (Jan) Horman of Dallas, Texas, Mrs Edward (Sylvia) Hoksbergen of Sully, and Bernie Van Roekel of Arlington, Texas; nine step-grandchildren, and 16 step-great-grandchildren

A memorial has been established to Hilltop Manor

John was the son of farmer Cornelius Den Hartog and his wife, Anna (nee Van Veen). He had siblings - William, Egbert, Henry, Simon and Helda Jane.

He lived in Iowa his entire life in Richland, Pella, and Leighton. He was the proprietor of a Drug Store.

February 9, 1922 he married Jozena/Jocena DeJong who was the daughter of Antonie and Geertje/Gertrude (nee de Geus) DeJong. They had two children - Raymond Glen born 1924 who died 2011 and Betty Joyce born 1930 who died 2005.

John died at the age of 96.
