HULSTEIN, WILLIAM R. AND MINA (DE JONG)

William R. Hulstein was born July 5, 1916 Sioux Center, Iowa, to Richard and Sarah Hulstein. Richard was the son of William C. Hulstein and Sjoertje De Vries. Sarah (De Vries) was the daughter of Eeltje and Eilka (Wierda) De Vries.

William R. Hulstein married Mina De Jong, born February 6, 1915, on March 31, 1943, at Perkins, Iowa, at the home of the bride's parents near Perkins, Iowa. Mina was the daughter of Gerben and Hattie (van Maanen) De Jong. Hattie was the daughter of Albertus and Mina Van Maanen.
William and Mina lived on a farm two miles west of Carmel, their address was Rock Valley, Iowa,until their retirement in October of 1979, at which time they moved to Sioux Center.

They were blessed with four children who attended Plato No. 5 school until reorganization with the Sioux Center system. Each graduated from high school and then went on to higher education. They enjoyed fishing with the children when they were home and traveling to places of interest. They ware members of the Carmel Reformed Church. Their children are as follows:

Harriet Hulstein was born June 21, 1944 and married David Anema December 29, 1972 at Denver, Colorado. They have a daughter, Pamela Sue born March 1, 1978. They live in Gunnison, Colorado. David is an electrician. Harriet had attended Nettleton Commercial College in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. She now works for the Denver National Park Department as a procurement clerk and contractor at the Curcante National Recreation Area.

Sarah Elaine was born April 21, 1947 and married Earl L. Smith of Green Bay, Wisconsin, at the Carmel Reformed Church, on April 17,1971. They have two children, Earl William and Michelle Lea. After high school graduation Sarah attended the Medical Institute of Minnesota, Minneapolis , Minneapolis, Minnesota and became a certified lab technician. She had also attended Dordt College. Sarah and Harriet both worked in the Sioux Center Community Hospital for some time. Sarah's husband Earl L. Smith is Pastor of the Emmanuel Reformed Church in London, Ontario, Canada. (He also has served in Lawton Oklahoma and McKee Kentucky.)

Ruth Ann born June 12, 1950 married Terry Duhn of Spirit Lake, Iowa, on June 26,1976, at the Carmel Reformed Church. They have one child Jesse Boyd born May 4, 1989. Ruthann attended school at Sioux Center High School and Northwestern College graduating with a B.S. Degree in Elementary Education in May of 1972. She taught school for 15 years, in Belmond and Ruthven, Iowa. After marriage they moved from Spirit Lake, Iowa to Dell Rapids, South Dakota and taught school as a Chapter T. Teacher (Remedial) since 1976. They now live in Glenwood, Minnesota, and operate the Hunts Resort. Terry is a carpenter-construction by trade.

Willard Dean Hulstein was born February 16, 1955 and married Karen Marie Ranschau on August 15, 1979 in the Central Reformed Church. They are the parents of two daughters, Lisa Ranae, June 6, 1981 and Danelle Joye, July 26, 1985. Willard attended Sioux Center High School and after graduation attended N.I.T.C. Agriculture Management Course. They farm on the home place west of Carmel, which will be a century farm in a few years, it has been owned by three generations. Karen is employed part time at Village Unlimited at Sheldon, Iowa.

Obituaries of William and Mina

William R. Hulstein, 69, of Sioux Center, died Wednesday, November 6, in a Sioux City hospital. Services were at 10:30 a.m. Saturday in the Carmel Reformed Church at Carmel. The Rev. Virgil Dykstra officiated.

Burial was in the Carmel Cemetery. Visitation was Friday in the Memorial Funeral Home in Sioux Center.

Mr. Hulstein was born July 5, 1916, at Sioux Center and attended Plato 5 rural school.

He married Mina De Jong March 31, 1943 at Perkins. They farmed near Carmel until 1979 when they retired and moved to Sioux Center.

Mr. Hulstein was a lifetime member of the Carmel Reformed Church.

Survivors include his wife; three daughters, Mrs. David (Harriet) Anema of Gunnison, Colo., Mrs. Earl (Sarah) Smith of London, Ontario, Canada, and Mrs. Terry (Ruth) Duhn of Dell Rapids, S.D.; one son, Willard of Rock Valley; two sisters, Mrs. Alfred (Ethel) Hoogland of Hospers and Mrs. Marion (Sylvia) Kredit of Margate, Fla.; five grandchildren and two step-grandsons.

MINA HULSTEIN, 88, of Sioux Center, Iowa died Sunday, November 9, at the Sioux Center Community Hospital.

Funeral services were held Friday, November 14, at 2pm at the Carmel Reformed Church of Carmel, Iowa with Rev. Mark Heijerman and Rev. Earl Smith officiating. Burial will follow in Carmel Cemetery.

Visitation was be held Thursday, November 13, from 2pm to 8pm, with the family present from 6:30 pm to 8pm at the Memorial Funeral Home of Sioux Center, Iowa.

The Hulstein Family requests memorials be directed to the New Horizon Fund, c/o Carmel Reformed Church Building Project.

MINA (DE JONG) HULSTEIN, daughter of Gerben and Hattie (Van Maanen) De Jong was born February 6, 1915 at Perkins, Iowa. She attended the Perkins Christian School.

Mina was united in marriage to William R. Hulstein on March 31, 1943 at Perkins. Following their marriage the couple farmed west of Carmel, Iowa where they raised their four children.

After retiring in 1979 they moved to their home in Sioux Center. Mina was a faithful member of the Carmel Reformed Church.

She passed away on Sunday, November 9, 2003 at the Sioux Center Community Hospital.

Mina is survived by three daughters and sons-in-law: Harriet and Dave Anema of Gunnison, CO; Sarah and Rev. Earl L. Smith of Macy, NE; Ruth and Terry Duhn of Glenwood, MN; sons and daughter-in-law, Willard and Karen Hulstein of Rock Valley along with her six grandchildren: Pamela Anema, Earl W. Smith, Michelle (Smith) Mays, Jesse Duhn, Lisa Hulstein and Danielle Hulstein; two step-grandsons: Anthony Anema and Michael Anema and one great granddaughter, Kristina Smith.

Mina is also survived by three brothers and sisters-in-law: Thomas and Martha De Jong of Hull; Albertus De Jong of Grand Rapids, MI; Arnold and Albertha De Jong of Hull; sister and brother-in-law, Ethel and Alfred Hoogland of Hospers and numerous nieces and nephews.

Mina was preceded in death by her husband, William R. Hulstein on November 6, 1985 and her parents.
