Obituaries of Bert and Hattie

Bert Jacobsma, 85, of Rock Valley, died Sunday in a hospital at Rock Valley. Services were Wednesday in the First Christian Reformed Church. The Rev. Roger Bultman officiated. Burial was in the Valley View Cemetery.

Mr. Jacobsma was born July I5, 1896, at Orange City.

He married Hattie Van Maanen Jan. 7, 1920, at Rock Valley. He farmed in the Rock Valley area, moving into town in 1963.

He was a veteran of World War I.

Survivors include the widow; five sons, Pete of Doon, Bernard of Laverne, Minn., Gerrit of Edgerton, Minn., Harold of Rock Valley and Robert of Jennison, Mich.; four daughters, Mrs. John (Jennie) Groen of Chandler, Minn., Mrs. Martin (Kate) Postma of Rock Valley. Mrs. Kenneth (Lucy) Bolkema of Edgerton and Mrs. Arie (Coby) Bliek of Larch wood; one brother, Robert of Rock Valley; 39 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Bert Jacobsma, 81, of Rock Valley, died February 1 at Valley Manor nursing home in Rock Valley.

Services were at 1:30 p.m. February 4 in the First Christian Reformed Church. The Rev. Roger Batman officiated. Burial was in the Valley View cemetery.

Mrs. Jacobsma, the former Hattie Van Maanen was born June 1, 1900, at Perkins. She married Bert Jacobsma Jan. 7, 1920, at Rock Valley. He died Nov. 15, 1981.

Survivors include five sons, Pete of Doon, Gerrit of Edgerton, Minn., Robert,of Jennison, Mich., Bernard of Luverne, Minn., and Harold of Rock Vailey; four daughters. Mrs. John (Jennie) Groen of Chandler, Minn., Mrs. Martin (Kate) Postma of Rock Valley. Mrs. Kenneth (Lucy) Bolkema of Edgerton and Mrs. Arie (Coba) Bliek of Larchwood: two sisters, Mrs. Sam P.H. (Annie) Kooima and Mrs. Jake (Bertha) Baartman, both of Rock Valley: 39 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren.

Accident Victim Funeral Services Held At Doon

Funeral services for Peter Bloemendaal, 23, of Doon were held on Friday, June, 1, at one o'clock at the farm home near Doon and at 1:30 at the Christian Reformed church at Doon. Rev. A. Bratt officiated and was assisted by Dr. H. Kuiper of the Rock Valley Christian Reformed church. Burial was made in the Valley View cemetery at Rock Valley.

Mr. Bloemendaal died suddenly Monday, May 28, as a result ot a tractor accident. He was born at Doon on January 15, 1923, and lived in that area all his life. He was united in marriage with Jennie Jacobsma on December 30, 1947.

Survivors include his widow, his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Cornelius Bloemendaal, of Doon; the following brothers and sisters: William of Volga, S.D.; Eilert of Hull; Jennie (Mrs. Cornie Klarenbeek) of Hull; Fannie (Mrs. J. Riemersma) of Grand Rapids, Mich.; Margaret (Mrs. Wm. Roghair) of Sioux Center; Nickolas of Doon; Grace at home.

Pallbearers were Joe Calsbeek, Franklin Calsbeek, Bernard Vant Hul, Edward, Fred and Albert Baker.

Jennie (Bloemendaal) Groen was born on April 17, 1921 to Bert and Hattie (Van Maanen) Jacobsma in her parents home near Rock Valley, IA. She lived with her family near Rock Valley where she was raised and attended country school. Jennie continued to live near Rock Valley until 1947.

She was united in marriage to Peter Bloemendaal on December 28, 1947 at the Christian Reformed Church in Rock Valley. After marriage they lived on a farm near Doon, IA. On May 28, 1951, Peter had a fatal tractor accident. Jennie then moved back to her parents farm near Rock Valley, where she lived the next 13 years.

On November 27, 1964, Jennie was united in marriage to Alfred De Jager in Rock Valley. They moved to Chandler, MN where she lived the next 13 years. On April 8, 1977, Alfred died from a heart attack. Jennie continued to live in Chandler, MN.

She was united in marriage to John Groen, Jr. on June 1, 1981 at the Christian Reformed Church in Chandler. They continued to live in Chandler until Jennie was taken to Edgebrook Care Center on July 14, 1997. She died there on December 14, 1997 at the age of 76 years, 8 months and 3 days. She was a member of the Christian Reformed Church of Chandler. She was involved in the Dorcas Ladies Aid and the Chandler Senior Citizens.

She is lovingly remembered by her husband John Groen, Jr., one step son, Pete and Carol Groen, Chandler, MN; three sisters: Katie and Martin Postma, Rock Valley, IA, Lucy and Ken Bolkema, Edgerton, MN and Coba and Arie Bliek, Larchwood, IA; five provers: Pete and Elsie Jacobsma, Doon, IA, Gerrit and Mary Jacobsma, Luverne, MN, Robert and Carol Jacobsma, Jenison, MI, Bernie and Kathy Jacobsma, Luverne, MN, and Harold and Glenda Jacobsma, Luverne, MN and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death her her two former husbands.

Obituary of Katie and Martin

Katie Postma, 83, died Saturday, June 2, 2007 at Hegg Memorial Hospital, Rock Valley Katie Jacobsma was born on June 15, 1923 to Bert and Hattie (Van Maanen) Jacobsma northwest of Rock Valley. She was united in marriage to Martin Postma on January 8, 1947 in Rock Valley. Together they lived 41 years on the north end of Main Street. In that time she did some house cleaning. In 2005 they moved to Four Seasons Apartments. Katie loved her grandchildren.

Katie is survived by her husband, Martin; sons: Ron (Judy) Postma of Escondido, CA, Vern (Mary) Postma of Rock Valley; daughter, Diana Postma of Parker, CO; 7 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren; sister, Lucy (Ken) Bolkema of Leota, MN; brothers: Peter (Alsie) Jacobsma of Rock Valley, Gerrit (Mary) Jacobsma of Luverne, MN, Rob (Carol) Jacobsma of Grand Rapids, MI, Bernie (Kathy) Jacobsma and Harold (Glenda) Jacobsma all of Luverne.

Martin Postma, 91, of Rock Valley, died Saturday, October 13, 2012 at Hegg Memorial Hospital.

Martin Postma was born February 6, 1921 at Rock Valley, Iowa, son of Richard and Jennie (Abma) Postma. He served in the U.S. Army in WW II (Dec. 11, 1942 - Oct. 8, 1945) fighting with the First Infantry Division overseas. Wounded twice, he was awarded the Silver Star and Purple Heart.

Martin married Katie Jacobsma on January 8, 1947 at Rock Valley. Together they lived at the north end of Rock Valley and Martin hauled cream and milk for Rock Valley and Sanborn Creameries before becoming an independent driver of Alton Rendering. Martin and Katie moved to Four Seasons in Rock Valley on April 5, 2005. Katie died on June 2, 2007.

Coba Bliek, 74, Larchwood, died Saturday, November 27, at George Good Samaritan Center after a lengthy battle with Alzheimer’s disease. Services were Wednesday, December 1, at New Life Assembly of God Church in Inwood. Burial was at Richland Cemetery in Inwood, under the direction of Porter Funeral Home in Inwood.

Coba Bliek, daughter of Bert and Hattie Jacobsma of Rock Valley, was born July 24, 1930. She married Arie Bliek on September 8, 1950. They farmed most of their married life. She was a devoted wife and mother to her family and her joy in life was sharing each day with her husband, children and grandchildren.

Survivors include her husband, Arie Bliek of Larchwood; two sons, Larry and Connie Bliek of Larchwood, and Harlan and Shari Bliek of Larchwood; three daughters, Donna and Ron Bos of Inwood, Cheryl and Russ Borchardt of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and Connie and Joel Pollema of Brandon, South Dakota; 11 grandchildren; five brothers, Pete and Elsie Jacobsma of Rock Valley, Gerrit and Mary Jacobsma of Luverne, Minnesota, Rob and Carol Jacobsma of Grand Rapids, Missouri, Bernie and Kathy Jacobsma of Luverne, and Harold and Glenda Jacobsma of Luverne; and two sisters, Katie and Martin Postma of Rock Valley, and Lucy and Ken Bolkema of Leota, Minnesota.

Peter Jacobsma, 83, died Thursday, August 18, 2011 at Good Samaritan Center, George, IA. Funeral Service 2:30 pm Saturday at United Reformed Church, Doon. Burial at Hillside Cemetery, Doon. Visitation with the family present 6:30-8 pm Friday at Porter Funeral Home, Rock Valley.

Peter Jacobsma was born June 10, 1928 to Bert and Hattie (Van Maanen) near Rock Valley, IA. He grew up on a farm. Peter was united in marriage to Elsie Bliek on September 17, 1948 on the family farm near Rock Valley. Together they farmed near Hudson, SD and then near Doon, IA. They retired from farming to Rock Valley in 2000 and Peter than began working for Mid Sioux. He was a past Deacon at the Christian Reformed Church, Doon. He enjoyed gardening, fishing, buying and selling small scale tractors and especially spending time with his grandchildren. Peter lived at Whispering Heights in Rock Valley before moving to the Good Samaritan Center in George, IA in September of 2010.

Survivors include his wife, Elsie of Rock Valley, IA; daughters: Doris (Robert) Iwen of Boyden, IA, Marilyn Niemeyer of Doon, IA, Gloria Jacobsma of Rock Rapids, IA and her special friend Hurley Van Bemmel of Doon, IA, Sandi Ruter of Springfield, MO; sons: Rod (Beverly) Jacobsma, Jeff (Pam) Jacobsma all of Doon, IA; 14 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; brothers: Robert (Carol) Jacobsma of Jenison, MI, Bernie (Kathy) Jacobsma, Harold (Glenda) Jacobsma all of Luverne, MN.

He was preceded in death by his sons-in-law: John Ruter and Harlan Niemeyer; brother, Gerrit Jacobsma; sisters: Jennie Groen, Katie Postma, Cobie Bliek and Lucy Bolkema.


Elsie Jacobsma, 84, died Sunday, March 9, 2014 at Whispering Heights in Rock Valley. Elsie was born March 14, 1929 on the family farm near Rock Valley, the daughter of Bert and Grace (Verdoorn) Bliek. She graduated high school and obtained her teaching certificate at Westmar College in Le Mars, IA and taught at a country school.

Elsie married Peter Jacobsma at the family farm near Rock Valley on September 17, 1948. Together they farmed near Hudson, SD and then by Doon. Elsie loved being a foster grandparent for many years. During retirement, they enjoyed camping. Elsie became a resident of Whispering Heights in 2000. Peter died on August 18, 2011.

Surviving relatives include her daughters, Doris (Robert) Iwen of Boyden, IA, Gloria Jacobsma of Rock Rapids, IA and her friend Hurley Van Bemmel of Doon, Marilyn Niemeyer of Doon, and Sandi Ruter and fianc George Martin of Bolivar, MO; sons, Rod (Beverly) Jacobsma and Jeff (Pam) Jacobsma all of Doon; brothers, Arie (Darlene) Bliek of Larchwood, IA and Herbert (Mina) Bliek of Rock Valley; sisters, Josephine De Jager of Rock Valley and Grace (Ferrell) Boyles of Hawarden, IA; grandchildren, Lance (Cindi) Iwen, Darcy (John) Valline, Erica (Chad) Robertson, Briana (Jed) Van Der Zwaag, Derick (Kim) Niemeyer, Andrea (Justin) Soodsma, John (Tracy) Ruter, Jessica (Joe) McCammon, Megan, Justin, and Ryan Jacobsma; step-grandsons, Eric (Becca) Vis, Justin (Kara) Vis, Jason Vis; and 25 great-grandchildren.

Obituary of Bernard

BERNARD JACOBSMA was born on September 24, 1938 to Bert and Hattie (Van Maanen) Jacobsma in Rock Valley, IA. He was raised in Rock Valley and attended Christian school in town. During his childhood, Bernie was a member of the Rock Valley Christian Reformed Church where he was baptized in October of 1938 and made his Profession of Faith in 1962.

On January 25, 1961, Bernie was united in marriage to Kathleen Oostra at the Protestant Reformed Church in Hull, IA. The following year, the couple moved to Doon, IA where they lived for four years until 1966, when they relocated to Inwood, IA. In 1974, the family moved to Luverne, MN. Through his work life, Bernie worked as a farmer and in the yard sorting animals at IBP. Bernie and Kathy shared their home together until Monday, June 18, 2018 when Bernie died peacefully under hospice care at the age of 79 years, 8 months, and 24 days.

Bernie was a member of the American Reformed Church in Luverne. He enjoyed attending auctions, which led to his hobby of collecting toys. Bernie was a hard worker and was willing to give of his time and talents to help those who needed it. Though he wasn’t a man that said, "I love you", his love was demonstrated in what he did for you. His family meant everything to him. Bernie trusted in the Lord no matter what the circumstances. Faith in God will sustain us.
