Mrs. Wm. Vander Velde

Mrs. Katie Vander Velde, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Vande Weerd, was born July 4, 1894, at Anthon, Iowa. The family moved to Rock Valley in about 1915. They also lived in Minnesota.

She was married to William Vander Velde on Jan. 25, 1917 at Rock Valley. They lived in Rock Valley most of the time until moving to Lakewood, Calif. in 1951. She passed away August 9, 1960 at her home of a heart attack. She had been an invalid for about 25 years. She was 66 years, 1 month and 5 days.

One daughter, three year old Lucille, preceded her in death.

She leaves to mourn, her husband, William, two sons, John of Bellflower, Calif., Richard of Rock Valley and one daughter Betty (Mrs. James Bartels) of Lakewood, Calif, and six grandchildren, three sisters: Mrs. Hattie Babbs of Westfield, Ill.; Mrs. Henrietta Vander Berg of Sioux Falls, S. D., and Mrs. Marie Bauman of St. Petersburg, Florida; five brothers, Herman, Schaller, Ia; John of Larchwood, Henry of Soiux City and Bert and Art of Rock Valley.

She was also preceded in death by her parents, one brother, Mellis and a sister, Mrs. Henry Kempema.

Funeral services were held at Lakewood, Calif., at 10 a.m. Thursday, Services were held in Rock Valley Monday with services at the Vander Ploeg Funeral home at 1 o'clock and at the First Reformed church at 1:30 with Rev: Henry B. Poppen conducting. Mrs. George Van Beek was organist. Mrs. Allen Bonthuis and Mrs. Jake Vande Weerd sang, "Jesus Is Always There," accompanied by Mrs. Van Beek. Pallbearers were nephews: Bradley Bauman, Ronald Vande Weerd, Martin Vander Velde, Bob Vande Weerd, Jack Vande Weerd and Cornie Vande Weerd. Burial was in the Valley View cemetery here.

WM. VANDER VELDE RITES HELD MONDAY

Funeral services for William Vander Velde, 76, of RockValley, were held Monday, Feb. 9, 1:30 p.m. in the First Reformed church with the Rev. Ralph Ten Klay officiating. Prayer services were at 1:00 p. m. Organist Mrs. George H. Van Beek accompanied Mrs. Ken Kooima during the hymn "All the Way my Savior Leads Me". Pallbearers were Roben, Alan, and Jack Vande Weerd, Bradley Bamnan, Arie Vanden Berg and Martin vander Velde. Burial was in the Valley View Cemetery under the direction of Porter Funeral Home. Mr. Vander Velde died Friday Feb. 6 at Hegg Memorial hospital in Rock Valley following a long illness.

William Vander Velde was born March 9, 1893 in the Netherlands and came to RockValley in 1893. He married Katie Vande Weerd on January 25, Jan. 1917. She preceded him in death in August, 1960. He married Gertie Franken Bobeldyk on February 14, 1963 in Inwood. He was a former trucker in the area.

Survivors are his widow, Gertie of Rock Valley; one daughter, Mis. James Bartels of Riverside, Calif; two sons, John of Bellflower, Calif, and Richard (Pudd) of Rock Valley; five stepdaughters, Mrs. Lawrence Bos of Inwood. Mrs. JcbnDokter of Bellflower, Calif. Mrs. Albert van Oort of RockValley, Mrs. Kenneth Schuurman of Holland, Mich, and Mrs. Roy Folkerts of Inwood; four stepsons, Walter, Gerald and Eugene Bobeldyk of Holland, Mich, and Allen Bobeldyk of Sioux Falls, S.D. and 36 grandchildren

Gertie VanderVelde

Mrs. William VanderVelde, 79, of Rock Valley, died Sunday, April 22, at Hegg Memorial Hospital. Services were held on April 25 at the First Reformed Church of Rock Valley with Assistant Pastor Al Pruis officiating. Burial was in Richland Cemetery in Inwood under the direction of the Porter Funeral Home of Rock Valley.

Mrs. Vander Velde, the former Gertie Franken, was born October 10, 1889, in Sioux Center. She married John Bobeldyke November 17. 1916. He died August 6, 1961.

She married William Vander Velde February 14, 1963. He died on February 6, 1970.

Survivors include the three sons, Walter and Eugene, both of Holland, Michigan, and Allen of Sioux Falls; five daughters, Mrs. Lawrence (Gertrude) Bos and Mrs. Roy Folkerts, both of Inwood, Mrs. John (Henrietta) Dokter of Los Alamitos, California, Mrs. Albert (Janet) Van Oort of Rock Valley and Mrs. Stanley (Jennie) Cnossen of Holland; two stepsons, Richard of Rock Valley and John of Bellfiower, California; a stepdaughter, Mrs. Jim (Betty) Bartels of Jerome, Idaho; 28 grandchildren, and 28 great-grandchildren.

Obituary of Richard

Richard "Pudd" Vander Velde, 91, of Rock Valley, died Wednesday, July 5, 2017, at Hegg Memorial Health Center in Rock Valley. Funeral services will be held Saturday, July 8 at 10:30 AM at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church of Rock Valley with Pastors Kandi Anderson and Chris Godfredsen officiating. Following a luncheon, burial will be held at Peace Lutheran Cemetery of rural Sioux Center. Visitation, with the family present, will be Friday, July 7, from 5:30-7:30 PM at the church.

Richard (Pudd) Vander Velde was born in Rock Valley on October 12, 1925, to William and Katie (Vande Weerd) Vander Velde. He attended elementary and high school in Rock Valley. Pudd enlisted in the Navy on March 21, 1944 when he was 18 years old and did his basic training at Farragut, Idaho. He was on the U.S.S. Princeton aircraft carrier while it was on patrol in the Pacific Ocean when it was bombed and sunk on October 24, 1944. Following his honorable discharge from the Navy on June 9, 1946 he returned to Rock Valley and worked at the Rock Valley Lumber yard for many years.

Pudd was an avid sports fan and loved playing baseball on the Rock Valley town team in the 1950’s as a second baseman. His nickname, Pudd, was due to the baseball mitt he often carried in his back pocket. He married the love of his life, Evelyn Dierks, on June 27, 1954, at Peace Lutheran Church and became a co-owner with John Bauman of South Side Service Standard Station (where Pump n Pak is currently located). He later opened Pudd’s Our Own Hardware store located on Main Street. After ten years, he sold the business and worked at AEA4 at River Valley as an aide and bus driver. He retired in January 1987.

Pudd was an active member of Our Saviors Lutheran Church where he served on the church council, he was a member of the VFW, and on the original planning committee for the Rock Valley hospital. He enjoyed gardening, fishing, golfing, all sports and especially his Cubs, a die-hard fan. He was devoted to his family and loved watching his children and grandchildren in all their school events and sporting activities.

He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Evelyn, his three children: daughter, Kristi Bult (Jerry) of Hartington, NE, son, Nathan (Sue) Vander Velde of Appleton, MN, and son, Todd (Karma) Vander Velde of Rock Valley. Pudd had 8 grandchildren, Shelly (Steve) Schirm, Brady Vander Velde, Troy (Anna) Bult, Mark (Laura) Bult, Megan Bult, Jessica (Tyler) Glanzer, Lindsey (John) Hellinga, and Samantha (fiancé Mike Cliff) Vander Velde; and 8 great grandchildren, Isabel, Landon, and Lane Schirm, Zyila and Patrick Bult, and Savannah, Owen, and Emmitt Glanzer.

Pudd was preceded in death by his parents, brother John (Rolene) Vander Velde, and sister Betty (Jim) Bartels
