Obituary of Bertha

Bertha VanderWeerd, the daughter of Bert and Nancy (DeGraaf) VanderWeerd, was born at Maurice, Iowa on January 22, 1900. She lived her youth and received her education in the Hospers, Iowa, area. On April 27, 1921, she was united in marriage to John DeGraaf, and to this union, six children were born. Following their marriage, they farmed in Sheldon, Milfor and Sanborn areas. John died on October 3, 1961. Bertha entered Prairie View Home at Sanborn on December 11, 1980, and she died there on March 9, 1993.

Bertha is survived by her children: Orville and Lois DeGraaf of Melvin, Lloyd DeGraaf of Sanborn, Joyce and Don Nelson of Melvin, and Floyd and Judy DeGraaf of Ottumwa; six grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren; and two great great grandchildren; also a half sister, Mrs. Ralph Romberg of Paramount, California.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, infant twin children and 12 brothers and sisters.

Bertha was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Sanborn.

Funeral services were held March 12, 1993, at First Presbyterian Church at Sanborn with Rev. Paul Soderquist officiating. Casket bearers were Terry DeGraaf, Larry DeGraaf, Brad DeGraaf, Mitch Wynia, Ricky Tremmel and Ryan DeGraaf. Honorary bearers were Rodney Buren, Jack Protextor and Harold VandeWeerd. Congregation singing was "How Great Thou Art" and "When the Roll is Called up Younder," with Christa VanMeeteren as organist. Burial was in Roseland Cemetry, Sanborn, Iowa, with Sanborn Funeral Home in charge.
