Obituaries of Art and Alice

Art De Goei, 81, of Orange City died Tuesday, July 13, in a hospital in Orange City.

Memorial services were at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, July 18, at First Reformed Church in Orange City,with the Rev. Frank Snuttjer officiating. Burial was at 12:30 p.m. in Memory Gardens Cemetery in Sioux Center.

De Goei was born July 5, 1906, in Dusseldorf, Germany the son of Gilbert De Goei and Catherine Van Beek De Goei.

When he was five years old, the family moved from Germany to The Netherlands and then they came to the United States and to Sioux Center when he was age 10.

He married Alice Van Roekel June 15, 1933, in Sioux Center. The couple farmed in Middleburg. In 1951, they moved to Orange City where he was employed by Kepp Construction, retiring in 1981. He was a member of First Reformed Church.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, Gil of Sheldon and Arthur Dale of Geneseo, Illinois; two daughters, Dee Van Driel of Minneapolis and Alyce Faye Vander Stoep of Orange City; 13 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Alice De Goei, 92, of Orange City passed away Monday, Feb. 2, 2004, at Orange City Municipal Hospital.

Memorial services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at the First Reformed Church chapel in Orange City, with the Rev. David Ter Beest officiating. Burial will be prior to the service Thursday in Memory Gardens Cemetery, Sioux Center, Iowa.

There will be a family prayer service at 9:30 a.m. Thursday at Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City. Visitation will be after 3 p.m. today, with the family present 6:30 to 8 p.m.. at the funeral home.

Alice, along with her twin sister, Johanna, was born March 8, 1911, in Sioux Center, the daughter of Gerrit G.A. and Hattie (Vande Berg) Van Roekel.

She was raised in Sioux Center, where she graduated from high school. She then attended normal training classes and exercised her passion for teaching children in rural schools.

On June 15, 1933, she married Art De Goei in Sioux Center. The couple made their home in the rural areas of Sioux Center, Rock Rapids and Middleburg, Iowa.

They also spent one year in California. In 1952 they moved to Orange City, where she was employed at Municipal Hospital, Dutch Oven Bakery and Pioneer Memorial Home. Art passed away July 14, 1987, in Orange City.

She spent 10 wonderful years living at Pioneer Memorial Home and the last seven years at Heritage House Nursing Home in Orange City, where she greatly appreciated Dr. Kamstra and the nursing staff.

She was a member of First Reformed Church.

She was an avid reader and enjoyed gardening and flowers. She was known for her lovely knitting and crocheting, donating many items to the hospital bizarre.

She was devoted to her children and grandchildren and was looking forward to her 18th great-grandchild due in February.

She is survived by four children, Gilbert De Goei and his wife, Shirley of Sheldon, Iowa, Delores "Dee" and her husband, Bob Van Driel of Minneapolis, Alyce Faye Vander Stoep of Orange City, and Arthur Dale De Goei and his wife, Mary of Springdale, Ark.; 13 grandchildren, Scott De Goei of Sheldon, Gail Vander Hamm of Ireton, Iowa, Cory Van Driel of Isle, Minn., Troy Van Driel and Wade Van Driel, of Minneapolis, Sarah Dean of Hudson, Wis., Jack Vander Stoep of Columbus, Ohio, Jill Pluim of Orange City, Alyson Vander Stoep of Seattle, Wash., Emily Vander Stoep of Manhattan Beach, Calif., Heath De Goei of Irvine, Calif., and Hilarie Glass and Travis De Goei, both of Omaha; 17 great-grandchildren; a brother, John GA. Van Roekel of Sioux Center; a sister, Jean Mieras of Boyden, Iowa; and a sister-in-law, Irene Van Roekel of Sioux Center.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by an infant son, Junior in 1940; a son-in-law, Donald Vander Stoep; two brothers, Abe and Gerrit Van Roekel; and three sisters, Mina Kroon, Jeanette Kraayenbrink and Johanna Klein.
