Obituaries of Leonard and Nancy

Funeral services were held Tuesday, April 3 at 10 a.m. at the First Reformed Church in Slayton, Minn., for Leonard Henry Luchtenburg.

He passsed away unexpectedly at his farm home on March 30. He was 69 years old.

Rev. Gary Dekker and Rev. Albert Hertle, officiated. Inter ment was at Westlawn Cemetery, Orange City.

Mr. Luchtenburg was born May 3, 1914 in Sioux County to Henry and Geraldine Van Wechel Luchtenburg. He grew up on the family farm and attended country school near Orange City.

On Feb. 22, 1938, he married Nancy Van Roekel at Orange City. They lived on a farm near Orange City until 1941 when they moved to a farm near Ashton, then in 1950 they bought a farm near Dundee, Minn, and resided there since.

Mr. Luchtenburg was a member of the Reformed Church and belonged to the First Reformed Church at Slayton since 1950. He was also a member of the Grace Gospel Fellowship Camp Board for many years. He enjoyed fishing, but farming always was his life and he always enjoyed it.

Survivors include his wife Nancy of rural Dundee, Minn., four daughters; Carol, Mrs. Dwight Johnson of Willmar, Minn., Harriet, Mrs. Melvin Moret of Worthington, Minn., Norma, Mrs. Aaron Vano of Marysville, Wa., and Judy, Mrs. George Liljegren of St. Louis Park, Minn; one brother, John of Leota, Minn.; six sisters, Mrs. Jesse Blake of Hawaii, Mrs. Christina Vande Aarde of Orange City, Diane, Mrs. Cornie VerDoorn of Ashton, Wilmina, Mrs. Herman Fedders of Orange City, Blanche, Mrs. John Zevenbergen of Baldwin, Wis., and Ellen, Mrs. Robert Bonnecroy of Orange City; also 14 grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Peter Adolph.

Nancy Johanna Van Roekel Luchtenburg, 87, of Worthington, Minn, died of cancer on April 25, 2002, in Grand Rapids, Mich.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, May 3, at 10:00 a.m. at the American Reformed Church in Worthington. The Rev. Irwin Van Leeuwen will officiate. Burial will be held at 2:30 p.m. at West Lawn Cemetery in Orange City under the direction of the Benson Funeral Home in Worthington.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, May 2 from 4:00-8:00 p.m. at the funeral home and on Friday, May 3 from 9:00-10:00 a.m. at the church.

Nancy was born April 1, 1915, at Alton, the daughter of Anthony (Tony) and Jane (Nette) Vander Meer Van Roekel. She grew up, was educated and worked as a hired girl in the Alton-Carnes farming community.

On Feb. 22, 1938, she married Leonard H. Luchtenburg of Orange City. The couple farmed near Orange City and Ashton.

Nancy enjoyed writing letters and during World War II she wrote to over 60 servicemen to make sure they got a "letter from home" every two weeks.

In 1950 the couple moved to their farm near Dundee, Minn. She enjoyed gardening and baking and she provided day care in her home. She was employed at the Fulda Nursing Home for nine years.

Len and Nancy were members of the Grace Gospel Fellowship Camp Board for over 30 years.

Upon Leonard's death on March 30, 1984,Nancy moved to Worthington. She volunteered at the Thrift Store and for Meals on Wheels. She was a member of American Reformed Church of Worthington and was active in its ministries.

Survivors include four daughters,Carol and her husband Dwight Johnson of Willmar, Minn., Harriet and her husband Mel Moret of St. Augustine, Fla., Norma and her husband Aaron Vano of Grand Rapids, Mich, and Judy and her husband George Liljegren of St. Louis Park, Minn.; 16 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; a sister Leora and her husband Joe Mulder of Montevideo, Minn.; a sister-in-law, Henrietta Van Roekel of Rock Valley; and many other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; two sisters and two brothers.
