Obituary of Gertrude

Gertrude Van Otterloo Clark 84, Milford, died Sunday, Sept. 4 at Lakes Regional Health Center in Spirit Lake. Services were Thursday, Sept. 8, at Good News Community Church in Okoboji, with the Rev. Mark Schwarz officiating. Burial was at East Lawn Cemetery in Sheldon, under the direction of Turner Funeral Home in Milford.

Gertrude Clark, daughter of Jacob and Margaret (Van Maanen) Van Wyhe, was born March 1, 1921, in Hull. After completion of her high school education, she attended Northwestern College in Orange City for a year. She married Gerrit Van Otterloo on April 8, 1943, in Hull. Mr. Van Otterloo died in 1978. In addition to her responsibilities as a mother and homemaker, she worked as a certified nurse's aide for many years.

She married Merle Clark on her 70th birthday in 1991 in Phoenix.

She was a member of Good News Community Church in Okoboji, where she was active in the Tuesday morning Bible Study group. She was also active in the Fun and Friendship Group. She was an active swimmer and enjoyed reading and crewel embroidery.

Survivors include her husband, Merle Clark of Milford; four children, Gary Van Otterloo of Milford, Marlow Van Otterloo of Mankato, MN, Curtis Van Otterloo of Medford MN, and Judy Glasser of Phoenix; three stepchildren, Peggy Clark, Richard Clark, and Carol Clark; seven grandchildren; and a great-granddaughter.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Gerrit Van Otterloo; 10 brothers; and five sisters.

Obituary of Gary

A funeral service for Gary Van Otterloo was held Monday, July 22, 2013, at First Lutheran Church in West Okoboji, Iowa.

Gary Harlan Van Otterloo was born Feb. 12, 1944, in Hull, Iowa, to Gerrit and Gertrude (Van Wyhe) Van Otterloo.

He enlisted into the U.S. Navy on July 12, 1962, and served as a fire control technician until his discharge on Aug. 11, 1966.

Gary married Fern Carolyn Lorenzen on Sept. 20, 1968, in Sheldon, Iowa. They moved to Milford, Iowa, in 1972 and have lived here since.

Gary was a master brick layer, fantastic sub-sandwich maker, delicious donut baker and pizza thrower extraordinaire. He had a laugh that was contagious, a smile that was infectious and a larger than life personality.

Gary loved sports, especially golf, baseball and football, and he always included his family and friends in his love for the games. Gary passed away July 18, 2013, at Lakes Regional Healthcare in Spirit Lake at the age of 69.

Survivors include his wife, Fern; daughter, Ali (Scott) Carpenter; son, Gerritt (Maren) Van Otterloo; grandchildren, Jordaen Duhn, Miles Van Otterloo and Halsten Van Otterloo; brothers, Marlow (Dawna) Van Otterloo, Curtis Van Otterloo; sister, Judy (Dave) Glasser "brother," Galyn Carpentier; nieces, nephews and a host of friends.

Gary was preceded in death by his parents; stepfather; brother-in-law; and nephew.

Turner Jenness Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
