Howard Van De Weerd, 56, died Sunday, April 18, 2010 at Whispering Heights due to cancer. Memorial Service 11 am Wednesday at First Reformed Church at Rock Valley. Burial prior at Valley View Cemetery. Visitation Tuesday with family present 6- 8 pm Tuesday at Porter Funeral Home, Rock Valley

Howard Van De Weerd was born July 23, 1953 at Canton, SD, son of Chester L. and Frances (Sitter) Vande Weerd. He attended school in Rock Valley and graduated from RVHS in 1971 and received his bachelor of science degree in Ag Business from Iowa State University in 1975. Upon graduation, Howard worked for Bilmar Foods in Storm Lake, IA and then for Vande Weerd Combine Salvage.

After being diagnosed with a benign brain tumor in the early eighties, Howard was unable to work full time, but spent much of his time collecting and recycling precious metals.

He was a life-long member of the First Reformed Church in Rock Valley and made his public profession of faith on November 29, 1971.

He was a faithful member and attending worship was a priority in Howard's life. His faith was lived out each day as he served the Lord with his gentle spirit and servant heart.

Howard will be remembered for his contentment in life, never complaining, and was often heard saying "I am as snug as a bug in a rug". He chose to live each day to the fullest and find joy in the journey. He won his battle with lung cancer on Sunday, April 18, 2010 receiving his eternal reward in Heaven.

Howard is survived by his parents, Ches and Fran Vande Weerd of Rock Valley; sisters, Myra Rennie of Placentia, CA, Cheryl (Keith) Van Beek of Rock Rapids, IA; brothers, Carl (LaVonne) Vande Weerd and Brad (Janet) Vande Weerd all of Rock Valley; several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents; and brother-in-law, Robert Rennie.

Obituary of Chester

Chester L. Vande Weerd, age 84 of Rock Valley, Iowa, died Thursday, June 20, 2013 at Hegg Memorial Health Center in Rock Valley. Chester Loyd Vande Weerd, son of Henry J. and Alice (Bonthuis) Vande Weerd, was born December 19, 1928 in Rock Valley, Iowa. Chester served his country as a member of the United States Marine Corp during the Korean War.

After returning from the war, Chester was united in marriage with Frances (Fran) Sitter on September 12, 1952 in Boyden, Iowa. The couple made their home in Rock Valley where Chester farmed for 35 years with Clarence (Junior) Kooima. In 1969, Chester opened Vande Weerd Combine Salvage Inc. He retired in 1990. Chester and Fran enjoyed wintering in Yuma, Arizona for 21 years. Chester also enjoyed collecting toys and tools. He was a member of the VFW and First Reformed Church of Rock Valley. Chester served his church as an Elder, Deacon, Sunday School Teacher and Youth Sponsor. Chester was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather.

Chester is survived by his wife of 60 years, Fran Vande Weerd of Rock Valley; four children, Carl (LaVonne) Vande Weerd of Rock Valley; Myra Rennie of Placentia, California; Cheryl (Keith) Van Beek of Rock Rapids, Iowa and Bradley Vande Weerd of Rock Valley; 10 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren; brother-in-law, Mike Loffredo of Cardiff, California and sister-in-law, Myrna VanDe Weerd of California.

Preceding Chester in death were his parents, son, Howard VanDe Weerd, son-in-law, Robert Rennie, siblings, Janet, Aldert, Mable, Clarence, Lorraine, and Frank and two infant siblings, Gerrit and Loretta.
