Orange City Herald; December 25, 1895: Saturday morning Jacob Jans, a farmer residing about four miles north of Sioux Center, committed suicide by hanging himself in a cow stable. Coroner De Bey was called and was accompanied to the scene of the tragedy by Gerrit Bolks of this city. An inquest was held and it was found that deceased came to his death as stated above. Mr. Jans was one of the unfortunate farmers in the course of the cyclone that passed through that part of the country last May, and received quite severe injuries about the head from which he never recovered, having been deaf ever since. His buildings were also destroyed by the cyclone and he was compelled to build new ones, and in doing so involved an indebtedness of several hundred dollars which so worried him that it is thought his mind gave way. He was an honest and hard working man and is spoken of in the highest terms by his neighbors. He was about forty years of age and leaves a family of a wife and six children to mourn his tragic death. The sympathy of all go out to them.
