Obituary of G Mary
G. Mary Van De Steeg was born June 21, 1898 to Cornelius and Dor (Brouwer) Ver Steeg in Orange City, Iowa. As a young child she moved with her parents to the Edgerton, Minnesota area where she attended country school.

On March 29, 1917, she was united in marriage to William (Bill) Van De Steeg in Edgerton. They settled in the Edgerton area for several years and then in 1923 move to Lebanon, SD along with three children. In 1929, after six tough years in South Dakota, they moved back to a farm near Chandler, Minnesota with their four children, Mabel, Nick, Clarence and Wilbur. After several years they purchased their own farm west of Chandler and lived there until 1961 at which time they purchased a home and moved into Chandler. They were custodians of the Chandler Reformed Church for eleven years. During this time Mary also cleaned houses in Pipestone, sold wallpaper and did wallpapering for others for fourteen years.

On January 18, 1985 Bill preceded Mary in death. Mary continued to live at her home in Chandler until June, 1988, when failing health caused her to move to the Edgebrook Care Center. She moved to the Slayton Manor in 1991, where she lived until her death on Friday, January 22, 1999 reaching the age of 100 years, 6 months and 1 day.

Mary was a member of the Chandler Reformed Church. She enjoyed music and played the piano and chord organ at the Manor. She had also been active in the Slayton Manor choir and enjoyed doing crafts.

She is lovingly remembered by her son Nick and his wife Effie of Artesia, CA; two daughters-in-law, Esther Van De Steeg, and Viola Van De Steeg, 19 grandchildren, 43 great grandchildren, 6 great-great grandchildren; two sisters, Irene Kuiper, Paulina, IA and Gladys and Gerald Phillips, Levittown, PA; and many nieces of nephews.
