Gysbert was a life-long resident of Lynnville, Iowa. He retired form Iowa Southern Electric, Grinnell, IA. Gys lived next door to his sister Ada Beyers Jay. After the divorce from Millie, "Gys" remained a bachelor for the rest of his life but remained a wonderful and important part of the Carter Family.

Many happy summers were spent in Lynnville with Gys and Ada by his adopted grandsons Mike Carter and Craig Turney. They would run the county reading meters, trimming trees from power lines and finding power outages. Many raspberries were picked and eaten from Aunt Ada's bushes.

Gysbert wintered in Harligen, Tx for many years after his retirement.

Gys passed away after being taken to the hospital in Oskaloosa, IA. Cause of death was emphysemia as he was a heavy smoker for most of his life.

Obituary of Florence:
Funeral Services for Mrs. Vern Mildred F. Appleton, 77, of 719 1st Avenue, Apt 1, a resident of Newton since 1941, will be held at 1 PM Saturday, February 22, at the Wallace-Pence Funeral Home. Dr Douglas Oelke, pastor of the First Baptist Church will conduct the services. Burial will be in Newton Union Cemetery. Memorial contributions to the American Heart Assn will be taken. Millie died Wednesday evening at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines.

Survivors are her husband; a son, Roland Carter of Madill, OK; three grandsons Mike & Steve Carter of Oklahoma and Susan Bramlet of Norman, OK; sister, Betty Evans of Lynnville, IA. She was preceeded in death by her parents, a sister and two brothers.

Millie had worked at the Maytag Company for many years before working as a Nurse's Aid at Skiff Medical Center in Newton. She was a member of First Baptist Church, Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary and Skiff Medical Center Auxiliary.

The daughter of George and Rosalie Nichols Smith. She was born Nov 5, 1908 in Grinnell. She married Vern Appleton in July 1946 at Newton.
