Henry Kroon, 64, Dies Following Long Illness
Henry Kroon, 64, died at his home at 9:30 P.M. Sunday night. He had been confined to his bed for the past ten weeks. A year and a half ago Mr. Kroon submitted to an operation on his stomach to remove a cancerous growth. Although he was in great pain much of the time he maintained a cheerful spirit; at all times, being greatly devoted to his home and family.
About a year ago the Henry Kroon family moved from the farm near Sioux Center to town, having lived in this vicinity for the past 34 years. Funeral services were held on Wednesday, May 13, 1942 at 1:30 at the home and 2 o'clock at the First Ref. church of which Mr. Kroon was an active member. Pallbearers included 4 sons, Wm. Neal, Gerrit, Rich, and 2 son-in-laws, Peter Punt and Henry Vander Berg.
Survivors include his widow, 4 sons, Cornelius of Rock Rapids, Gerrit of Rock Rapids, Dick of Middleburg, John Wm., at home, 8 daughters, Gert Mrs. Peter Punt) of Stickney S D., Tillie (Mrs Henry Vande Berg) of Sioux Center, Cornelia at home, Margaret (Mrs Manus Voortman) of Rock Valley, Bernice Arlone Grace, Clarine, Marilyn Mae, all at home. Also surviving are 3 brothers, John of Sioux Center, Dick of Bruno, Minn., Bert of Perkins; 5 sisters, Mrs. John Oliver of Hull, Mrs. Gt. J Scholten of Steen, Minn., Mrs. Maas Korthals of Steen, Minn., Mrs. Gt. Kraayhof of Beaver Creek, Minn., and Mrs. John Van Ommen of Alvord, Ia.

Mrs. Henry Kroon, 94, of Sioux Center, died Wednesday, Sept. 26, at the Sioux Center Comm. Hospital. Services were at 10:30 a.m. Friday in the First Reformed Church at Sioux Center. Dr. Thurman Rynbrandt and the Rev. Gerrit Rezelman officiated. Burial was in Memory Gardens Cemetery under the direction of the Memorial Funeral Home.
Mrs. Kroon, the former Hattie Van Roekel, was born July 21, 1885, in The Netherlands. She came to the United States at the age of 7 and attended school at Sioux Center. She was married July 18, 1903, at Sioux Center. The couple lived on farms near Hull and Sioux Center. They moved into town in 1940. Mr. Kroon died in 1942.
Survivors include four sons, Neal of Rock Rapids, Gerrit of Boyden, Richard of Sioux Center and the Rev. William of Belmond; seven daughters, Mrs. Peter A. Punt of Stickney, S.D., mrs. Henry R. Vande Berg, Miss Cornelia, Mrs. Henry Baker, Mrs. Wilbur Vos and Miss Clarene, all of Sioux Center and Mrs. Merenus Voortman of Norco, Calif.; 36 grandchildren; 82 greatgrandchildren and eight great-great grandchildren.

Cornelia Kroon was born, July 13, 1915 to Henry D. and Hattie (Van Roekel) Kroon on the family farm near Perkins, Iowa. She received her education through the eighth grade in Sioux County rural schools. As a young lady, "Ceil" as she was known by her family and friends, enjoyed helping with the various chores on the farm. She was a hard worker and could pick corn with the best of them. Ceil cleaned homes for a number of years as well as providing care for her parents.
In the early 1940's, the Kroon family moved into Sioux Center when her father, Henry, was diagnosed with cancer. Cornelia continued to live with her mother after her father's death. She had a compassionate and giving personality, always putting the needs of others ahead of her own. She was a longtime member of First Reformed Church of Sioux Center and was a member of a circle. In her free time, Ceil enjoyed reading and listening to music. She was a big fan of sports and loved to watch basketball on television.
Left to cherish her memory are, her brother and sister-in-law, Rev. William and Marjorie Kroon of Hampton, Iowa; two sisters: Margaret Voortman of Hull, IA and Clarene Kroon of Sioux Center; sister and brother-in-law, Arlone and Wilbur Vos of Sioux Center as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Preceding her in death are brothers and sisters-in-law: Cornelius and Wilhelmina Kroon, Gerrit and Mary Kroon, Richard and Anna Kroon; sister, Marilyn Kroon; sisters and brothers-in-law: Gertrude and Peter Punt, Della and Henry Van De Berg and Bernice and Henry Baker.

Funeral Services Held Monday for Manus Voortman
Funeral services were held at the Carmel Reformed church at 1:30 p.m. Monday, April 17, for Manus Voortman, 55, former Sioux Center area resident, who passed away April 11 at Chino, Cal., where he operated a chicken ranch the past eight years. Services were conducted by the Rev. Brook Stephens and burial was made in the Sioux Center Community Cemetery under the direction of the Co-operative Funeral home. Casket bearers were Loren Vos, Garold Kroon, Henry L. Kroon, Everett Voortman, Henry V. Punt and Harold Van De Berg.
Mr. Voortman was born near Maurice, Iowa, December 14, 1911. On March 11, 1939, he was united in marriage to Margaret Kroon at Carmel. They farmed in the Sioux Center area until moving to California in 1959.
Survivors include his widow, Margaret, of Chino; four sisters, Irene (Mrs. Jake DeBoom), Chino; Mary (Mrs. Gerrit Kroon), Boyden; Fredrika (Mrs. Edward Van Ginkel), Norco; Cal.; Gertrude (Mrs. Peter Van Beek), Bellflower, Cal.; and seven brothers, Fred of Winnemucca, Nev., Marinus of Sioux Center, Richard of Ontario, Cal., Ed of Chino, John of Rock Rapids, Tony of Artesia, Cal., and Donald of Sioux Center.

Merenus Voortman, 66, of Norco, Calif., formerly of Sioux Center, died Sunday, October 3 in a hospital in Corona, Calif. Services were at 1:30 p.m. Thursday in the Carmel Reformed Church near Sioux Center. The Rev. Virgil Dykstra officiated. Burial was in the Carmel Cemetery. Family visitation was from 7:30 to .8:30 p.m. Wednesday in the Memorial Funeral Home.
Mr. Voortman was born Sept. 15, 1916, in Sioux Center where he was raised. He married Cornelia Wissink Aug. 4, 1940, at Carmel. They lived in the Sioux Center area. She died in 1967. He married Margaret Voortman March 29, 1968, at Carmel. They made their home at Norco.
Survivors include his wife; three daughters, Mrs. Ronald (Evelyn) Bajema, Mrs. John (Mildred) Hoekstra and Mrs. Orlen (Diane) Van Cee, all of Rock Valley; six brothers, John of Alvord, Donald of Sioux Center, Tony of Escalon, Calif., Ed and Fred, both of Ontario, Calif, and Richard of Sunnyside, Wash.; three sisters, Mrs. Gerrit Kroon of Boyden, Mrs. Peter Van Beek of Bellflower, Calif, and Mrs. Edward Van Ginkel of Ontario and nine grandchildren.

Margaret Voortman, 96, of Sioux Center, IA died Thursday, July 3, 2014, at Pleasant Acres Care Center in Hull, IA. Margaret (Kroon) Voortman was born September 29, 1917, in Sioux Center, Iowa to Henry and Hattie (Van Roekel) Kroon. Margaret was the seventh of twelve children in the Kroon family. She attended country school from primary through the eighth grade.
Margaret began doing housework and babysitting for families in the vicinity as well as helping with mending and sewing at home. Each year she sewed new dresses for two of her younger sisters to wear to the Sunday school picnic. Margaret and her sister, Cornelia, also worked in the fields picking corn by hand. Margaret loved music. She and her sister, Bernice sang together accompanied by Margaret on the guitar. Margaret played the piano by ear and also played the accordion.
Margaret married Manus Voortman on March 11, 1939 at Carmel, Iowa. They farmed in the Orange City and Sioux Center area until 1959 when they moved to California where they owned and operated a chicken ranch until Manus died in 1967. On March 29, 1968 she married Merenus Voortman, her first husband's brother. Merenus and Margaret retired in Norco, California. Merenus preceded Margaret in death in October of 1982. In 1990, Margaret returned to Sioux Center. She was able to live on her independently until she was 92 years old. In December of 2009 she moved into assisted living at Franken Manor; she became a resident of Pleasant Acres Care Center in Hull in January of 2011.
Margaret is survived by her sister and brother-in-law, Arlone and Wilbur Vos of Sioux Center; sister, Clarene Kroon of Sioux Center; brother and sister-in-law, Rev. William and Marguerite Kroon of Hampton, IA and several nieces and nephews. Margaret is also survived by Merenus' three daughters and sons-in-law: Evelyn and Ron Bajema, Mildred and John Hoekstra and Diane and Dennis Van Zee all of Rock Valley and four sisters-in-law: Johanna Voortman of Sioux Center, Gertrude Voortman of Chino, CA, Nellie Voortman of Visalia, CA and Gertrude Voortman of Escalon, CA.
Margaret was preceded in death by her husbands, Manus Voortman and Merenus Voortman; her parents; brothers and sisters-in-law: Neal and Wilhelmina Kroon, Gerrit and Mary Kroon, Richard and Anna Kroon; sisters, Marilyn Kroon and Cornelia Kroon; sisters and brothers-in-law: Gertrude and Peter Punt, Della and Henry Van De Berg, Bernice and Henry Baker.
Bernice H. Baker, 79, Sioux Center, Iowa, died Jan. 1, 2001, at St. Luke's Regional Medical Center in Sioux City, Iowa. Mrs. Baker was born Jan. 20, 1921, on a farm three miles east of Sioux Center to Henry and Hattie (Van Roekel) Kroon. She married Henry Baker on June 21, 1946. As a young girl, she worked for a restaurant in Sioux Center and also for the Sioux Center Cleaners before becoming a dedicated homemaker. Mrs. Baker was a member of Central Reformed Church in Sioux Center.
Survivors include her husband, Henry Baker of Sioux Center; sons and daughters-in-law, Herlon and Margene Baker of Rochester, N.Y., and Larry and Rebecca Baker of Klamath Falls; daughter and son-in-law, Sally and Michael Dieltz of Sioux Falls, S.D.; four grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; sisters, Cornelia and Clarene Kroon, and Margaret Voortman of Sioux Center; sister and brother-in-law, Arlone Wilbur Vos of Sioux Center; brothers and sisters-in-law, Richard and Ann Kroon of Orange City, Iowa, and The Rev. Henry John Baker, 84, of Sioux Center died Monday, December 19, at Royale Meadows Care Center in Sioux Center. A prayer service was conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday, December 21, at Memorial Funeral Home with the Rev. Roger Voskuil officiating, with a graveside committal service to follow in Memory Gardens Cemetery of Sioux Center. A memorial service is planned for Saturday, January 14, at First Reformed Church of Sioux Center at 10:30 a.m. with the Rev. Roger Voskuil officiating.
Baker was born on a farm one mile west of Doon to Jacob and Minnie (Schilt) Baker on August 27, 1921, the oldest of four children. He attended five country schools and graduated from eighth grade in 1934. In 1938, he graduated from Alton High School. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in December 1942. He was stationed on board USS PC465 for three years and was discharged in January 1946.
He married Bernice Henrietta Kroon on June 21, 1946, at her mother's home. She died on January 1, 2001, of cancer after 54 years of marriage. After he was discharged from the service, he worked for Wandscheer Manufacturing Co., VerHoef Chevrolet, Silent Sioux Manufacturing Co., then for the City of Sioux Center as wastewater plant operator for 26 years, retiring in 1993. He was an avid reader and enjoyed gardening and growing flowers.
He is survived by his second wife, Alice Koerner-Baker of Sioux Center whom he married October 25, 2003; three children and their spouses, Herlon and Margene Baker of Sioux Center, Larry and Rebecca Baker of Canby, Oregon, and Sally and Michael Dieltz of Sioux Falls; six grandchildren; three great grandchildren; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Marguerite and the Rev. William Kroon of Hampton and Annabelle and Leland Rensink of Boyden; one sister-in-law, Wilma Baker of Sioux Center; and several nieces and nephews.
He was also preceded in death by his brother, Marion "Mike" Baker. The Baker Family prefers memorials to the First Reformed Church Organ Fund.

Alice Koerner-Baker, 91, of Sioux Center, IA, formerly of Freeman, SD, died Saturday, January 11, 2014, at Sioux Center Community Hospital. A visitation will be held on Thursday from 4-8PM, with the family present from 6-8 PM at the Memorial Funeral Home of Sioux Center, IA. A funeral service will be held Friday at 9:30 AM at First Reformed Church of Sioux Center, IA with Rev. Travis Else officiating. A prayer service for family and friends will be held on Friday at 1 PM at the Zion Reformed Church of Menno, SD with Rev. Travis Grassmid officiating. Interment will follow the prayer service in the Menno Cemetery of Menno, SD. The Koerner-Baker prefers memorials to the Gideon’s International.
Alice V. (Oswald) Koerner-Baker was born at Menno, South Dakota to Emil and Sarah (Schaeffer) Oswald on March 28, 1922. Alice was confirmed in 1936 at the Salem Reformed Church. At one year of age, Alice's father passed away as the result of an accident. Alice attended country school for 8 years in Yankton County. Instead of furthering her education, Alice stayed home to help her mother with farming until her marriage to Calvin Koerner on January 12, 1941, in Menno. She faithfully helped him with his farming career until retirement. To this union of 62 years, 4 children were born: Arlo, LaVern, Clinton, and Tweila.
After Calvin passed away, she married Henry Baker on October 25, 2003. Alice loved to quilt, garden, and bake. Many family members treasure the quilts she made. Her husband Calvin always said she could have fed all of Hutchinson County with her garden. She especially enjoyed baking for all of her family and friends, and always looked for opportunities to make something. Her caramel rolls were a hit every Thanksgiving, and she continued to bake up until the week of her passing. In her last days, she got to say special goodbyes to her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. On January 11, 2014, at the age of 91, Alice passed away quietly at the Sioux Center Hospital in Sioux Center, Iowa with family members by her side.
Those left behind to cherish her memory include three children, Arlo and Edith Koerner of Freeman, SD; LaVern Koerner of Phoenix, AZ; and Tweila and Norm Van Voorst of Sioux Center, six grandchildren; a step-grandchild and ten great-grandchildren. She is also survived by two sisters-in-law from the Koerner family: Ruth Record of Menno, SD and Leona Koerner of Freeman, SD as well as a host of nieces, nephews, and friends.
Preceding her in death was her husband Calvin; her second husband, Henry Baker; a son, Clinton; two brothers and sisters-in-law: Rueben and Adella Oswald, Edwin and Lanora Oswald; sister and brother-in-law, Amanda and Siggy Liepelt; and a step-grandson, Paul Van Voorst.
Rev. William (Bill) Kroon, 94, of Mason City, formerly of Hampton, passed away Tuesday, 27 Mar 2018, at Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City. Bill was born on 25 Jun 1923, in Sioux Center, IA, to Henry D. Kroon and Hattie Van Roekel. He graduated from Sioux Center High School. He continued his education by attending and graduating from Northwestern Jr. Academy, Central College as well as Western Theological Seminary. He was ordained as a minister in the Reformed Church in America in 1949, and served churches in Cazenovia, MI; Lester, IA; Titonka, IA; Aplington, IA; Edgerton, MN; and Belmond, IA.
Bill was united in marriage to Marge Baker on 16 Jun 1949, in Sioux Center, Iowa. To this union, four children were born. Bill was a lifelong member and minister of the Reformed Church in America. He had a passion for ministering to everyone. Bill lived his life faithful to his calling, loving God and his neighbor, and touching the lives of many people in the congregations he served during his years in ministry. Bill enjoyed reading the newspaper, watching birds and paying attention to the weather. He was an avid St. Louis Cardinals fan and enjoyed listening to music, attending concerts and singing. Most of all, Bill was a loving and devoted husband, father, and grandfather and was always delighted to spend time with people he loved. Bill had a charming sense of humor and was a loving, gentle and compassionate man, who loved being a pastor, loved his family, and loved people of all walks of life.
Bill is survived by his son Dale (Laurie Diemer) Kroon of Clear Lake, daughter Linda (Jane Stewart) Kroon of Iowa City, sister Arlone (Wilbur) Vos of Sioux Center, sister Clarene Kroon of Sioux Center, six grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, along with many nieces, nephews and other relatives.
He was preceded in death by his parents Henry and Hattie, wife Marge, daughter Diane, son David, along with nine siblings.
Bill's family is grateful to the staff at Mercy Hospital and Hospice of North Iowa for their compassionate care in Bill's final days, and to the many people who have kept Bill and us in their prayers.

Clarene Kroon was born October 29, 1929, in Sioux Center, Iowa. Her parents were Henry and Hattie (Van Roekel) Kroon. Her father died of cancer in 1942 at the age of 64 and her mother passed away in 1980 at the age of 94. Clarene comes from a large family, being the 11th of 12 children. She had seven sisters and four brothers. Only one sister is still living. She attended country school from primary through 5th grade. She and her sister cleaned the country school house in exchange for piano lessons from Alice Eppink. Clarene finished her schooling at the Sioux Center schools.
She was very involved in the music programs at school, both vocal and instrumental as well as accompanying other musicians on the piano. A particularly fond memory is going to the National Music Contest in St. Joseph, Missouri. They traveled the 270 miles to St. Joseph (in a school bus.) Clarene accompanied a trumpet trio that earned a Superior rating. While still in high school, she did an "office practice' session at Wesselink Insurance Agency, which turned into a 49-year career as secretary and bookkeeper for the agency. Music continued to be an important part of her adult life. She sang in the choir and accompanied various music groups at First Reformed Church as well as in the Sioux Center area. Clarene retired from her working career in 2000 and enjoyed living at Roya le Meadows since January of 2016.
She is survived by a sister and brother-in-law, Arlone and Wilbur Vos of Sioux Center as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services Held Here Monday for Miss Marilyn Mae Kroon, 36
Funeral services were held at the First Reformed church here at 10:30 a. m Monday. February 16, for Miss Marilyn Mae Kroon, 36, daughter of Mrs. Henry Kroon of Sioux Center, who died unexpectedly February 12 enroute to the hospital. Services were conducted by the Rev. Jack Boerigter and burial was made in the Sioux Center Community cemetery under the direction of the Co-op Funeral Home of Sioux Center. Miss Kroon was born in Sioux Center May 1, 1933.
Survivors besides her mother include seven sisters, Mrs. Peter A. Punt of Stickney, S.D., Mrs. Merenus Voortman of Norco, Calif. , Mrs. Henry P.
