Obituaries of Johanna, Steven and son Cornelius (twice!)

Mrs. Stephen Hulstein, 58, died at her home in Sioux Center Friday evening, November 25 following a lingering illness.

Mrs. Hulstein, nee Johanna Heynen was born at Lalenneth (sic!), Gelderland, The Netherlands on Jan. 3, 1880. She came to America at the age of thirteen. On April 1, 1898 she was married to Stephen Hulstein of Sioux Center, who survives her.

She is also survived by the following children: Anthony Hulstein, Maurice; Mrs. Arie Punt, Maurice; Mrs. Hein Vreeman, Hull; Neal Hulstein, Chicago; Mrs. Jack Granstra, Maurice; Mrs. Clarence Borst, Grand Rapids, Mich.; Henrietta and Stephen Hulsteim, still at home; Gerrit Hulstein, Hospers and Mrs. Lane Punt, Maurice.

Other survivors are a brother, Wm. Heynen of Sioux Center, and one sister, Mrs. Wm. Vander Heide of Grand Rapids and 12 grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at 1:00 at the home and at 1:30 at the Second Reformed church with Rev. Mr. M. Keuning officiating. Interment was made in the Sioux Center cemetery.

Mr. Steven Hulstein came to America at the age of seven years in 1871. He first settled near Pella and in 1879 moved to Sioux County where he spent the remainder of his life. Mr. Hulstein had reached the age of 89 years, 9 months and 14 days.

On March 15, 1889 he was united in marriage to Wympee Van Maanen and to this union the following children were born: Cornelia, Mrs. Lane Punt, and Gerrit, who preceded him in death in 1946 as well as one son, who died in infancy, and on May 29, 1895 his wife passed away.

On April 1, 1898 he was united in marriage to Johanna Heynen and to this union the following children were born: Tony; Winnie, Mrs. Arie G. Punt, Johanna, Mrs. Hein Vreeman; Neal; Grace, Mrs. Jake Granstra; Reka, Mrs. Clarence Borst; Henrietta, Mrs. Steven Kiel and Steven Hulstein, Jr., and three children died in infancy.

On Nov. 25, 1938 Mrs. Hulstein preceded him in death. Mr. Hulstein is further survived by 35 grandchildren and 32 great grandchildren. Two brothers, William and Gerrit, and two sisters, Johanna and Cornelia preceded him in death.

Mr. Hulstein passed away on Saturday July 17, following a lingering illness.

Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at the home and at the Second Christian Reformed Church with Student C. Tuininga officiating, assisted by Rev. P. A. De Jong and Rev. John Roggen. Pall bearers were Gerrit A. Van Roekel, Irwin Van Marel, William L. Mouw, Bernard Granstra, Calvin Hulstein and James Borst.

Burial was in the Sioux Center Community Cemetery and arrangements were under the direction Vander Ploeg's Funeral Home of Sioux Center.

The funeral took place Tuesday from the Presbyterian church.

Obituaries of Steven and Hermina

Steven Hulstein, 59, of Hull died Friday, September 19, at a Sioux City Hospital. Services were at 1:30 p.m. Monday at Hope Christian Reformed Church in Hull, with the Rev. Carl Bratt officiating. Burial was in Hope Cemetery at Hull. The Andringa Funeral Home of Sheldon is in charge.

Mr. Hulstein was born on March 7, 1921, at Sioux Center. He married Hermina Kiel on Oct. 2, 1941, at Morris. They lived at Mt. Carmel until 1945, when they moved to a farm near Hull.

He was a member of the Hope Christian Reformed Church.

Obituary for Hermina Hulstein

Mrs. Hermina Hulstein, age 96, of Hull, passed away on Thursday, November 24, 2016, at Sioux Center Health.

There will be a funeral service on Tuesday, November 29, at 10:30am, at the Hope Christian Reformed Church in Hull. The Rev. Todd Zuidema will officiate. Interment will follow the service at the Hope Cemetery in Hull. Visitation will be after 4:00pm on Monday, with the family present from 5:30pm to 7:30pm at the church.

Arrangements are with the Oolman Funeral Home in Hull.

Hermina was born on July 29, 1920, on a farm between Orange City and Maurice, the daughter of John and Marie (Huisman) Kiel. As a child, she worked on the farm, helping with the large garden and orchard. She often spoke of her love for her "mother’s fresh cherry pie." As a teenager, she was employed at the Kalsbeek Market in Orange City.

On October 2, 1941, she married Steven Hulstein. They farmed near Carmel until 1945, when they moved to a farm between Boyden and Hull. She enjoyed farming, including milking cows, feeding calves, and almost any other chore that needed doing. Steve passed away in 1980.

Hermina continued dairy farming with her son, Glenn, until 1986, when she purchased a home in Hull. She planted flowers at Den Hoed’s Greenhouse near Boyden until the age of 75. In 2006, she moved to the Homestead Cooperative in Hull. She enjoyed her new home and loved the other residents who were so helpful towards the end of her stay. In the spring of 2015, she transferred to the Pleasant Acres Care Center in Hull.

She was a member of the Hope Christian Reformed Church, where she enjoyed going to a Bible study. She liked working and helping others. She looked forward to crocheting and making blankets for her children and grandchildren.

Survivors include her two sons and their wives, Stanley and Cindy Hulstein, of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; and Glenn and Marjean Hulstein, of Hull; six grandchildren, [redacted]; fourteen great-grandchildren, [redacted]; two sisters, Mary Addink and Evelyn Kroeze, both of Orange City; five sisters-in-law, Edna Kiel, of Fullerton, California; Geri Kiel, of Orange City; Grada Kiel, of Sioux Center; Joan Kiel, of Sheldon; and Myrtle Kiel, of Orange City; and many nephews and nieces.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by two sisters and their husbands, Kathryn and Arend Wassink and Hilda and Dick Addink; six brothers, Steven Kiel, and his wife, Henrietta; Raymond Kiel; Howard Kiel, and his wife, Marie; Vernon Kiel, Clarence Kiel, and William "Bill" Kiel; and two brothers-in-law, Henry Addink and Orville Kroeze.

Memorials may be directed to the Hull Christian School.
