Funeral services for Mrs. Minnie Van Roekel, 72, who died at a Cherokee hospital
last Tuesday, were held at 2 o'clock Saturday afternoon at the Barnard Funeral home.
Rev. C. E. Custer, pastor of the First Methodist church, officiated with burial in Grace
Hill cemetery.
She suffered a stroke some time ago and had been in the state hospital at Cherokee until
her death.
Mrs. Van Roekel, longtime resident of this vicinity, was born January 8, 1887, in H'land.
One of nine children, she came to the United States with her parents at the age of 3 and
settled at Sioux Center.
Four of her brothers, Garret, Steve, William and Arnold, and one sister, Johanna, and her
parents proceeded her in death.
Following her marriage to William Van Roekel she resided on a farm near Hawarden.
After his death six years ago she moved into town.
Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Grace Van Houten of Marshall Minn.; a son, John Van
Roekel of Valley Springs, S.D.; two sisters, Mrs. Hattie Van Raalte of Rock Rapids and
Mrs. Grace Overman of Salem, Ore., and a brother, Henry Van Roekel of Lennox, S.D.
Funeral services for G. Van Roekel, 67, who died Wednesday, September 10,
were held at the Frazier Funeral home at 2:30 p. m. Saturday and att 3 p. m.
in the Methodist church. Rev. B. Roy Brown officiated. Burial was in Grace
Hill cemetery.
Mr. Van Roekel was born in Holland December 11, 1884, coming to America with
his parents at the age of seven. Since coming to America he lived in Sioux
county and for the past five years lived in Hawarden.
He is survived by the widow Minnie; one adopted daughter, Mrs. Marie van Houton
of Balaton, Minn.; an adopted son, John of Valley Springs, S. D.; Bert of Alvord,
Iowa, Geurt of Pocahontas, Iowa, Henry of Corsica, S. D.,Gerrit and Bernie
of Worthington, Minn., Albert of Los Angeles, Calif.; two sisters, Mrs. Leonard
Vos of Worthington, Minn., and mrs. Anna Top of Spokane, Wash., and five
grandchildren.
