Obituary of Gertrude
Gertrude Top, daughter of Everett and Ann Top, was born in Lismore, Minnesota on December 20, 1904. She grew to young womanhood and attended school in Chandler, Minnesota.

She was united in marriage to Oscar Olson of Steen, Minnesota on October 7, 1926, at Sioux Falls, S.D. After their marriage they lived in Luverne, Minnesota and moved to Sanborn, Iowa in 1944 where she lived until the time of her death at her home in Sanborn on January 9, 1974 at the age of 69 years and 19 days.

She is survived by her husband, Oscar, of Sanborn; four daughters, Lois (Mrs. Vern Norton) of Sanborn, Iowa, Jean (Mrs. Gene Boone) of Rock Rapids, Iowa, Kara (Mrs. Heinie Folkers) of Ottumwa, Iowa, and Ellen (Mrs. Jerry Thompson) of Cylinder, Iowa; 17 grandchildren; three great grandchildren; six sisters, Mrs. Grace DeGraff and Mrs. Ann Todd of Spokane, Washington, Mrs. Dena Gilbertson of Luverne, Minnesota, Mrs. Margaret Littrell of Oakland, California, Mrs. Evelyn Goodwin and Betty Rollert, both of California; and two brothers, Marvin and Barney Top, both of California.

She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother and two sisters.

She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Sanborn, Iowa and a member of the UPWO and the Ladies Aid.

Interment was in Roseland Cemetery of Sanborn.

Orva Jean Veen, the daughter of Oscar and Gertrude (Top) Olson was born on February 28, 1929 in Luverne, Minnesota. The family moved to Sanborn, Iowa in 1944. Jean attended school in Sanborn and while in high school she was always in band and was drum majorette for the marching band. She graduated from Sanborn High School in 1947. After graduation Jean worked for the Telephone Company in Sheldon.

She married Eugene K. Boone on August 30, 1949. They farmed with his parents southwest of Sheldon for four years before moving to Sanborn. In 1963 the family moved to Adrian, Minnesota, where Eugene and Jean both worked for Nobles County Review. They moved to Luverne, Minnesota in 1966 where Jean worked for the Farmer's Coop Elevator for three years before joining her husband at the Rock County Star Herald.

The couple moved to Rock Rapids, Iowa in 1973 where Jean worked for the Farmer's Coop Exchange. Eugene passed away on October of 1986.

Herbert "Herb" W. Veen, 83, of Sheldon passed away Thursday, July 24, 2008, at Avera-McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, S.D. Services will be held on Tuesday at United Methodist Church in Sheldon. Burial will be in Sheridan Township Cemetery at Boyden, Iowa, with military services conducted by American Legion Post 145 of Sheldon.

Herbert "Herb" W. Veen, the son of Cornelius and Johanna (Rensink) Veen, was born Dec. 8, 1924, on a farm near Boyden, Iowa. He received his education in the Grant Township Country school near Boyden. On June 1, 1944, he entered the U.S. Navy, serving aboard ship in the Pacific Theater of operations, mainly in the invasion of Okinawa. He was honorably discharged on May 17, 1946. He returned to the family farm where he farmed for 43 years.

On Nov. 18, 1948, he was united in marriage to Lois Rosenboom in Boyden. Herb and Lois were members of First Reformed Church in Boyden for 39 years, where he served as an elder. Herb also served on the Co-Op Board of Directors in Boyden. Lois preceded him in death on Dec. 6, 1987, in Sheldon. On March 18, 1989, he was united in marriage to Jean Boone. The couple remained on the family farm and Herb retired from farming in 1991. The couple enjoyed their winters in south Texas starting in 1993. The couple moved into Sheldon in 1996, and became members of United Methodist Church.

Herb is survived by his wife, Jean of Sheldon; two sons, Les and Norm; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two stepchildren; nine step-grandchildren; three great-step-grandchildren; two sisters, Cornelia and Emma; and a host of other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Lois; a granddaughter, Katie Veen; his parents; two brothers, Dick and John; two sisters, Bertha and Katherine; a stepson, Jeff Boone; and a step-grandchild, Tracy Boone.

Obituary of Kara:
Kara Ann Folkers, 80, of Ottumwa, formerly of Albia, died December 24, 2013, at the Ottumwa Regional Health Center.

She was born April 10, 1933, in Hills, Minn., to Oscar C. and Gertrude Top Olson. She married Hienie Folkers on December 30, 1951. A resident of Albia since 1976, she and her husband owned and operated the Sears store in Albia.

She was a former member of East End Presbyterian Church in Ottumwa and attended Trinity United Methodist Church in Albia. Kara enjoyed gardening, canning, collecting antique radios, making cheesecakes and decorating for Christmas. She especially enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two sisters, Gene Boone and Lois Norton.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Friday at Reece Funeral Home with Pastor Neil Montz officiating. Graveside services and burial will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Gilman Cemetery in Ashton, Iowa.
