Obituary of Darlene Marie Mathys
Darlene VanRoekel Harkness, 91, of Elk Point, South Dakota passed away on Wednesday, March 8, 2017 at Prairie Estates Care and Rehabilitation Center, in Elk Point. Darlene was born on February 2, 1926 in Sioux City, the daughter of Lee and Pearl (Stansbury) Mathys.

She was united in marriage to Emett W. VanRoekel on August 15, 1942. To this union, four children were born, Roxie, Sharon, Lee, and Mark. Emett preceded her in death on June 14, 1971. Darlene was united in marriage to Arnold Harkness on February 10, 1975. He passed away March 25, 1983.

Darlene worked at Prairie Estates as a Certified Nurse Aide for a numbers of years before she retired. Upon her retirement, she enjoyed playing BINGO and spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Survivors include her daughter-in-law, Paula VanRoekel; her grandchildren, Rhonda (Charles) Ritter, Danelle (Robbie) Claussen, Valerie (Shawn) Shea, Sandy VanRoekel, Troy (Cassie) VanRoekel, Alex VanRoekel (Shaina Hummel), and Eric VanRoekel. Darlene is also survived by her 11 great-grandchildren.

Darlene was preceded in death by her parents, two husbands,(Emett and Arnold) and her children, (Roxie, Sharon, Lee, and Mark).
