He was united in marriage on January 10, 1939 to Edna Nicholson of Ward, South Dakota. To this union one son, Howard was born. John spent his entire life farming until his retirement in the mid-1970’s. After his retirement, he continued to reside on the farm. He passed away November 7, 1997 at the age of 88 at the Pipestone Hospital.
John was an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church of Chandler, but at the present time was attending church at the Reformed Church. While attending Trinity, he served on the church council and was secretary of the Brotherhood. He enjoyed farming; and after his retirement, he helped out wherever he could. He also enjoyed the Senior Citizens Center, going fishing and visiting with friends and relatives.
He will sadly be missed by his wife, Edna Van Roekel of Chandler, Minnesota; one son, Howard Van Roekel of Chandler, one sister, Elizabeth Nicholson; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Geurt Van Roekel; and four sisters, Lena Schelhaas, Jennie Stoel, Johanna Douma, and Henrietta Vos.
On January 10, 1939, she was united in marriage to John P Van Roekel. Following their marriage, they lived and farmed in Fenton Township near Chandler, Minnesota. In the mid-70’s they retired from farming but continued living on their farm. On November 7, 1997, John preceded her in death. She continued living at her home until December 21, 2000, when she was taken to the Pipestone County Medical Center. She died there that same day at the age of 82 years, 7 months and 25 days.
Edna was a member of the Chandler Lutheran Church where she taught Sunday School, was active in Ladies Aid, serving in different offices. She was a member of the Senior Citizens where she served as Secretary and Treasurer, and also was a member of the Friendly Birthday Club. She enjoyed rising with family, friends and neighbors. Edna also loved to bake and collect new recipes. Edna also loved to garden and she and John spent many days fishing. They loved to be outdoors. Edna always enjoyed helping wherever needed.
She is lovingly remembered by her son, Howard Van Roekel of Chandler, Minnesota; two sisters, Hazel and her husband John Parten of Winston, Minnesota, and Signa and her husband John Parten of Winston, Minnesota, and Signa and her husband Norman Ellen of Holland, Minnesota, many nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her husband John, parents, two brothers, Terman and Julius Nicholson and one sister Marie Schmidt.
Howard served six years in the U.S. National Guard and farmed with his father. He lived on this same farm his whole life and was also employed over the years by B & R Distributing company in Worthington, Minnesota; drove truck for Huisken Meat Center in Chandler; at the Huisken Grocery and at the Chandler Lumber Company.
He attended the Chandler Reformed Church and lovingly cared for both his parents in their elder years. Howard enjoyed attending farm sales all around the area and visiting with friends, neighbors and family whenever he could. On Monday, January 17, 2005 Howard died at the Heart Hospital of South Dakota in Sioux Falls, SD at the age of 61.
Howard is survived by two aunts, Hazel Partin and Signa Ellen; many cousins and special friends, Curt and Linda Strampe of Chandler, MN.
His parents preceded him in death.
