Obituaries Gerrit, Jennie and Albert

Funeral services of Gerrit Van Maanen, whose death was mentioned in last week's Bee, were held from the Christian Reformed Church in this city, Saturday afternoon. The service were largely attended by many sympathizing relatives and friends who in this way showed the respect and high esteem they held for the departed.

The subject of this sketch was born at Bennekom, Holland, February 4th, 1848, and died at his home in Rock Valley, Wednesday, January 12th, 1921, aged seventy-two years, eleven months and eight days. His early life was spent in the land of his birth, where he grew to manhood.

He came to this country in 1892, and was a respected resident of Sioux County from that time until death claimed him. He resided near Orange City two years after his arrival, later moving to Sioux Center, where he spent five years of his life, going from there to Perkins, where he lived three years; then he moved onto a farm near Rock Valley where he lived fourteen years. Four years ago, he retired from the farm and moved with his family to Rock Valley, where the family reside in the present home. Mr. Van Maanen was taken sick a few months ago, and continued to fail in spite of all the medical skill and loving care could do for him.

He married twice. His first wife died in 1894. Two years later, he was married to Miss Zomermaand at Sioux Center who still survives him. Besides his wife, he leaves thirteen children, forty-eight grand children and three great grand children.

The children are Mrs. C. Hoff of Rock Rapids; Mrs. J. Van Wyhe, Perkins; H. Van Maanen, Hull; Mrs. G.J. Kosters, Ireton; Mrs. J. Van Slooten, Hull; D. Van Maanen, E. Van Maanen, A. Van Maanen, Mrs. B. Jacobsen, Mrs. H. Zwaak, Annie Van Maanen and Bertha Van Maanen, all of Rock Valley, and vicinity.

The deceased was a man who was highly respected and esteemed by all who knew him. He was a kind father and husband, an obliging neighbor, a good citizen, and he will be missed in the community here he spent so many years of his life.
