PEUSE, WILLIAM "BILL" AND HESTER (CLEVERINGA)
William, son of John and Maggie Roelison Peuse, was born May 30, 1907 at Maurice, IA. His grandparents were Willem and Sara Mookhoek Peuse of Maurice and Jan and Matje Tyssen Roelfson of Alton. William lived his youth near Maurice, Alton and Ireton and attended schools there. He joined the First Reformed Church of Maurice and enjoyed the Men's Brotherhood there and the singing under the direction of Rev. J. Straks.
William had three brothers: Everett, John and Henry: and five sisters: Sarah Den Ouden, Jennie Van Roekel, Minnie Bras, Mattie Peuse and Kate Van Berkum.
William worked for his father, neighbors, and as a hired man for a few farmers. When he worked for Harry Muilenburg the big flood happened at the Million Dollar corner in Sept. 1926. When he worked for Henry Brinks he got locked in there because they had scarlet fever. William did a lot of hand corn picking. In the winter months he used a circle saw to cut trees for firewood.
On March 1, 1933 William was married to Cora Van Bruggen at Ireton, IA by Rev. J.R. Van Dyke. They farmed on a farm of Merritt Hawkins southeast of Maurice. Cora Van Bruggen Peuse passed away on Sept. 29, 1940.
William left the farm and moved into Maurice. He worked at feed grinding with his own grinder and drove a bus for the Maurice Public School.
William was drafted into the Army on April 4, 1942 during World War II and served with the 4th Infantry Division in Alaska and later on as a Demonstration Team at Fort Benning, Georgia.
During service in Georgia, William and Hester N. Cleveringa, daughter of Nick and Gertrude Jurink Cleveringa, who was teaching at the Newkirk Consolidated School, were married near Newkirk on Feb. 9, 1944 by Rev, Z. Roetman. William and Hester lived in Columbus, Georgia until William was discharged from the Army on November 16, 1944. Hester worked in a towel and ticking factory in Georgia. They moved into Maurice where William was a school bus driver and mechanic at Bill De Koter's garage. Then William started farming near Maurice, and also near Newkirk and Middleburg.
On Dec. 12, 1944 Gertrude Peuse was born in Maurice. On April 9, 1950 John Peuse was born near Newkirk. Then Hester started teaching again. After having taught 33 years Hester retired in 1975 from Kinsey Elementary in Sioux Center.
Gertrude Peuse and Klaas Van Beek were married at Middleburg on June 17,1964 by Rev. W. Kolenbrander. They have four children and live in Sioux Center. Klaas is a truck mechanic at Mouw's and in the National Guard. Their children are: David, Gregory, Douglas and Kimberly.
John Peuse and Gloria BeItman were married at Hospers on June 8, 1972 by Rev, John Ekema. They have two children and live in Sioux Center. John works in the Post Office. Their children are Sheila and Michael.
In May, 1977 William and Hester moved into Sioux Center. They joined the First Reformed Church, Rev. T. Rynbrandt, Pastor. On April 9, 1986 William passed away and was buried in the Sioux Center cemetery. Hester lives in a condominium in Sioux Center.
