He was an automobile mechanic since 1946, working for the old Thayer Chevrolet and Monast Buick dealerships and as a partner in the old Jackson Buick dealership. He owned and operated his own shop, Anders Motors in Oskaloosa, for over 40 years, where he repaired and sold cars and lawnmowers, retiring in the late 1980s. Four mechanics who worked for him went on to start their own auto repair shops, and another became a body shop owner. To his many customers, he was simply Louie, a friend and the keeper of their cars. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Oskaloosa and the Dutchmasters Auto Club. He moved from Oskaloosa to Marshalltown in March of 2008.
