Mrs. Tom Van Zee

Mrs. Tom (Helen) Van Zee, 68, Miller, died Wednesday, June 1, 1988, at Hand County Memorial Hospital.

The funeral was 2 p.m. Saturday at the St. Lawrence Community Church with the Rev. Richard Ransom officiating. Burial was in the St. Lawrence Cemetery.

Helen M. Jones was born May 1, 1920, to Arden and Ruth (Blanchard) Jones on a farm seven miles north of St. Lawrence. In 1927 they moved to what was known as the Ice Farm near St. Lawrence. She received her grade school education to the eighth grade at the Van Zee country school. Se attended high school in St. Lawrence, living in town with relatives and in a dormitory for her junior and senior years. She graduated in 1938 as valedictorian.

She married Thomas Van Zee June 2, 1938 at St. Lawrence. They lived on the home place until 1939 when they bought a farm south of Miller. In 1966 they bought a home in Ree Heights and commuted back and forth to the farm. In 1971 they sold the farm to their son, Larry, and in 1972, they bought an acreage south of Huron where they lived until 1974 when they moved into Huron.

In 1975 they bought property in Sun Lakes, AZ, where they spent their winters, living in the Miller area during the summer months.

She was a member of the St. Lawrence Community Church, the Crusaders Roll of Honor at Sunshine Bible Academy, rural Miller, and many Bible studies in the Sun Lakes area.

She is survived by her husband, Tom Van Zee, Miller; five sons, Dale Van Zee, Salix, IA, Richard Van Zee, Pendleton, IN, Larry and Gaylon Van Zee, both of Miller, and Ray Van Zee, Huron; one daughter, Dorothy Van Zee, Socorro, NM; 12 grandchildren; her mother, Ruth Grewing, Miller; two brothers, Charles Jones, Lake Preston, and Edward Jones, Bigelow, MN; one sister, Elsie Hancock, Halstead, KS.

She was preceded in death by her father; one son, David Lee Van Zee; Thelma Philips; and one brother, Darrel Jones.

Pallbearers were grandson, Wyatt, Jason, Terry, Barry, Shannon and Jeremy Van Zee.
