Mrs. Van Zee Rites Held

Mrs. John C. (Martha) Van Zee, 69, died Wednesday, August 18, in Memorial Hospital following a lingering illness.

Funeral services were held Saturday at the St. Lawrence Community Church, with the Rev. Robert Wieduwilt officiating. Burial was in the St. Lawrence Cemetery, with arrangements in charge of the Reck Funeral Home.

Pallearers were Joe Verdught, Francis Kellogg, Richard Cotton, Cornelius Roberts, George Melber and Vernoon Monroe.

Martha Meyer was born Feb. 19, 1907, at Armour to Mr. and Mrs. Pete Meyer. She resided in Douglas County and was married to John Van Zee, March 24, 1927, at Grandview Church near Armour. They farmed in Douglas County until moving to Hand County. She was a member of Grandview Chruch until moving to Hand County when she joined the St. Lawrence Community Church.

Survivors are her husband; son, Kenneth, St. Lawrence; daughter, Mrs. Lester (Verna) Becker, St. Lawrence; seven grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; a brother Cornelius Meyer, Lakewood, Calif.; three sisters, Mrs. Iona DeHaai, Armour, Mrs. Lena DeVries, Lynden, Wash. and Mrs. Jennie May Slykhuis, Covina, Calif. She was preceded in death by her parents and one son.

John A. Van Zee

John A. Van Zee, 85, passed away Wednesday, Sept. 14, 1988, at his home east of St. Lawrence.

John A. Van Zee was born January 10, 1903 at Peoria, IA, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Stephen G. (Jane Van Roekel) Van Zee. At a young age he moved with his parents to Hand County, South Dakota. He attended the Van Zee Grade School. In 1926 he moved to Armour and worked on a farm.

He married Martha Meyer March 24, 1927 at Armour. They spent some time near Armour and then moved to Hand County. From 1933-39 he worked for the W.P.A. Since 1939 they lived on a farm east of St. Lawrence.

Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Verna and Lester Becker, St. Lawrence; one son and daughter-in-law, Kenneth and Geraldine Van Zee, St. Lawrence; one daughter-in-law, Mrs. Judy Mullen, Montebello, CA; seven grandchildren, Cheryl Pease, Debra Slunecka, Dean Van Zee, Jody Sandaval, Dianna Shaykett, Kennett Van Zee and Stacie Chifician; seven great-grandchildren; one brother, Tom Van Zee, Miller; one sister, Mrs. Chet (Alta) Marsh, Alhambra, CA; one sister-in-law, Mrs. Irma Van Zee, St. Lawrence; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, in August, 1976; one son, Robert; seven brothers; five sisters; and one infant.

Funeral services were held 11:00 a.m. Monday at St. Lawrence Community Church with the Rev. Richard Ransom officiating. Burial was in St. Lawrence Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Allen Kellogg, George Melber, Cornelius Robers, Wilbur Fremark, Francis Marshall and Richard Cotton.
