Obituary of Hendrik

Funeral services were held Friday for Henry Vande Weerd Sr., 92, at two o'clock at the First Reformed church with Rev. A. J. Aberson and Rev. N. A. Price officiating. Mr. Vande Weerd died at the home of a daughter, Mrs. Gerrit Wissink Tuesday afternoon after a lengthy illness.

Mr. Vande Weerd was born in the Netherlands March 11, 1865. He came from the Netherlands when a young man and settled near Maurice. He afterward farmed near Sioux Center and Rock Valley and moved to town about 1918 where he has made his home since. His wife preceded him in death in 1913.

He is survived by 13 children, seven sons. Harvey, Herman and Jake of Rock Valley; Ed of Preston. Minn.; Gysbert and Hein of Bellflower, Calif, and John of Stockton, Ill.; six daughters, Mrs. Gert Sneller of Sioux Center, Mrs. Henry Franken of Hawarden, Mrs. Ralph Kooiker, Long Beach, Calif.; Mrs. Gerrit Wissink, Rock Valley, Mrs. Henry Wesselink of Hull, and Mrs. Frank Gunnink of Montebello, Calif.; 48 grandchildren, 98 great-grandchildren and 11 great great-grandchildren.

The children from California were not able to be present at the funeral.

At the services a quartet composed of Mrs. Kenneth Van Vorst, Mrs. Bill Boer, Mrs. Henry Rozeboom and Mrs. Hubert Landegent sang. Pallbearers were grandsons.

Obituaries van Gerrit en Bertha

Gerrit H. Wissink, 87, Rock Valley, died Sunday, May 1, 1988 in the Hegg Memorial hospital, Rock Valley. Gerrit Wissink was born May 14, 1900, in Carmel, Iowa. He married Bertha Vande Weerd on Feb. 18, 1920, in Rock Valley. They farmed in rural Rock Valley until they moved into town in 1932. He hauled cream and later water on a route until he retired in 1965. He was a member of the First Reformed Church, Rock Valley.

Survivors include his wife; one son, Bernard, Sheldon, Iowa; two daughters, Mrs. Robert (Marian) Engel, Boulder, Colo.; and Mrs. Ned (Jane Ella) Vander Stouwe, Grinnell, Iowa; eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Services were held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday in the First Reformed Church, Rock Valley, with burial in the Valley View Cemetery, Rock Valley. Visitation was held at 1 p.m. in the Porter Funeral Home, Rock Valley.

Bertha Wissink, age 94, of Rock Valley died Tuesday, April 12,1994 at the Hegg Memorial Hospilal at Rock Valley. Funeral Service was held at 1:30 p.m. Friday at the First Reformed Church at Rock Valley. Rev. Harlan De Jong officiated. Burial was at the Valley View Cemetery at Rock Valley with Porter Funeral Home of Rock Valley in charge of arrangements.

Bertha was born June 6, 1899 in Holland. She was the daughter of Hendrik and Jannigje (Vonk) Vande Weerd. She came to the USA to the Rock Valley area with her family when four years old. Bertha married Gerrit H. Wissink February 18, 1920 al Rock Valley. They farmed near Rock Valley until moving to Rock Valley in 1932. Gerrit died May 1, 1988. Bertha moved to the Valley Manor of Rock Valley in November of 1991.

Surviving relatives include one son, Bernard and his wife Gladys of Sheldon, IA; two daughters, Mrs. Marian Engel of Boulder, Colorado, Jane E. and her husband Ned Vande Stouwe of Grinnell, Iowa; eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; two sisters, Dena Wesselink of Margate, Florida, and Gertrude Gunnink of Healdhurg, Califomia; and a sister-in-law, Esther Vande Weerd of Arkadelphia, Arkansas.

Obituary of Mr. Henry D. Wesselink

Henry Dick Wesselink, the third child of Dirk Jan Wesselink and his wife Mary Elizabeth (Betsy) Wandscheer, was born at Sioux Center, Iowa, on May 28, 1899. On August 6, 1899, he was brought to his Lord in holy baptism to be made a child and heir of God's Kingdom of grace according to the promise of Christ at the First Reformed Church of Sioux Center, Iowa. At the age of 14, he moved with the family to a farm near Hull, Iowa. In May of 1921, he made formal confession of faith in his Lord and Savior at the First Reformed Church of Hull, where he remained an active member until the time of his death.

On May 28, 1924, he was united in marriage to Gerdena VandeWeerd at Rock Valley, Iowa. One child, Eleanor Joyce, was born to this union. Except for one year in which they lived at Middleburg, Iowa, Mr. Wesselink spent the years of his married life on farms near Perkins or Hull. He retired from active farming in 1963, after incurring a heart attack on Palm Sunday of that year.

Mr. Wesselink sought to make his life a confession of faith in his Lord and was faithful in the use of the means of grace. At different intervals, he served on the consistory of the First Reformed Church of Hull since December of 1936 when he first became a deacon and December of 1947 when he first became an elder. He also had served in the capacities of Sunday School teacher and superintendent. He also served his community as a Township Trustee and a member of the Election Board. Death came to him quietly on the morning of Wednesday, November 20, as a result of a heart attack.

Funeral services were conducted by the Rev. David Ter Beest at the First Reformed Church at 10 a.m. Friday, November 22. Special music at the services were provided by the Boote Brothers Quartet and the congregation. Burial was at the Hull cemetery. Mr. Wesselink was preceded in death by a sister in infancy.

He is survived by his wife, Dena; a daughter, Eleanor Joyce Meyer and her husband, the Rev. Harold J. Meyer of Des Moines, Iowa; two grandchildren Deborah D. Meyer and Dirk J. Meyer, two sisters, Mrs. Bert (Mary) VandeWeerd of Rock Valley and Mrs. William (Johanna) Olivier of Hull; two brothers, Dan of Hall and Bernard of Ruthton, Minnesota, together with other relatives and friends who blend their sorrow at his death with the living hope of die resurrection to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

May 28, 1903-December 1, 1996

Dena Wesselink, 93, of Margate, Florida, died Sunday, December 1, at Beverly Manor Nursing Home in Margate. Services will be at 11 a.m. on Saturday, December 7, at Central Reformed Church In Sioux Center with the Rev. David Ter Beest officiating. Burial will be In the Hope Cemetery, Hull.

Mrs, Wesselink was born on May 28, 1903, at Maurice, the llth of 14 children of Hendrik and Jannigje Vande Weerd, She moved with her family to a farm near Sioux Center In 1905. Later her family moved to the Rock Valley area.

She married Henry D. Wesselink on May 28, 1924, at the home of her parents west of Rock Valley. May 28 was both her and her husband's birthday. The couple farmed at four different places in Sioux County. He died on November 20, 1968.

After his death, she moved to Sioux Center. She moved to Margate in 1987 to make her home with her daughter and son-inlaw, after having lived in Sioux County for more than 84 years.

During the past two years, she experienced confusion and frailty and needed much care. She broke her leg on October 26 and after surgery was hospitalized one week and then transferred to the Beverly Manor Nursing Home to Margate for therapy.

Mrs. Wesselink had been a member of several churches In Sioux County at different times in her life when she lived in different communities. She was active in the Women's Missionary Society, teaching Sunday school and directing children's choirs in earlier years. After she was widowed and moved to Sioux Center, she became a member of Central Reformed Church.

Survivors include a daughter, Eleanor J. Meyer and her husband, the Rev. Harold J. Meyer of Margate; one granddaughter; one grandson; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; eight brothers and four sisters, Henry J., Gert Sneller, Harman, Jennie Kooiker, Minnie Franken, Jacob, Evert, Bertha Wlssink, Hien, Gysbert and John, plus Garrit who died in infancy.

Obituary of John E

Funeral services for John E. Vande Weerd, 67, Stockton, Ill., were held Saturday, July 27, In Stockton and Monday, July 29, at the Porter Funeral Home in Rock Valley with the Rev. W.E. Ballard officiating. He died July 25 at a Freeport, Ill. hospital.

Vande Weerd was born in Sioux Center, December 16, 1906. He had been a resident of Stockton for about 20 years. He was a lab and X-ray technician.

He was married February 25, 1931, to Esther L. Klein who survives. Other survivors are three daughters, Mrs. Norman (Donna) Coppernall of St. Paul, Minn., Mrs. Jack (Deanne) Fields of Randallstown, Md., Mrs. Roger (Darlene) Miller of Colfax, Ill., one brother, Guy, of Bellflower, Calif.; six sisters, Mrs. Richard Sneller and Mrs. Henry D. Wessellink of Sioux Center, Mrs. Ralph J. Kooiker of Hull, Mrs. Frank Gunnink of Healdsburg, Calif., Mrs. Henry Franken and Mrs. Gerrit Wissink of Rock Valley, and five grandchildren.
