Obituary of Teunisje

Teunisje "Tillie" Van't Land was born January 3, 1911 in Nijkerk, Netherlands, daughter of Teunis and Gertje (Ter Maat) Van't Land. The family came to the United States and farmed first east of Inwood in 1920, then near Beaver Creek, then Alvord.

Tillie married John J. Ver Burg in 1935 at Inwood. Tillie and John farmed in the Inwood area until John's death in August of 1954. Tillie moved into Inwood and worked for the Inwood Meat Market and in 1968 married Albert Van Bemmel. Albert died November 8, 1973.

Tillie married Grover Mersbergen in 1979 and together they lived in Inwood moving to the Village Inn apartments in 1998. Grover died May 18, 2000.

Tillie continued to live at Village Inn until moving to Fellowship Village March 22, 2006. Tillie was a member of the Inwood Christian Reformed Church and its Willing Workers Society; she enjoyed sewing Raggedy Ann and Andy dolls; making "Grandma" quilts; and has always enjoyed flower gardens.

Obituary of Henry Paul

Henry Paul Van Bemmel, 75, died Tuesday, August 14, at his home in Rock Valley, after a courageous journey with cancer. Funeral service was 10:30 a.m. Friday at First Christian Reformed Church, Rock Valley with the Rev. Gene Vis officiating. Burial was at Valley View Cemetery, Rock Valley.

Survivors are his wife of 55 years, Mary Ann; children, Gene and Daris Van Bemmel, Bonnie and Harm Wiersma, Verlyn and Sandy Van Bemmel, all of Rock Valley, and Susan and Jeff Hoekstra of Sioux Center; 17 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; sisters, Gertrude Van Den Top of Doon and Marie and Jack Van Dam of Chandler, Minnesota; brothers, Leonard Van Bemmel and Alvin and Wilma Van Bemmel, all of Doon, Marion and Carol Van Bemmel of Steen, Minnesota; sisters-in-law, Kathryn Wielenga, Tillie Van Voorst and Lyda Tamminga.

He was preceded in death by an infant brother, Henry; brother-in-law, John Van Den Top; sister-in-law, Ruth Van Bemmel; a sister-in-law; and three brothers-in-law.

Obituary

DOON, IOWA- Leonard "Red" Van Bemmel, 84, of Doon, died Sunday, February 14, 2021 at his home. Memorial Service will be 11:00 a.m. Friday, February 19, 2021 at the United Reformed Church in Doon with Rev. Joshua Engelsma of the Doon Protestant Reformed Church officiating. Private family committal at Hillside Cemetery will precede the service. Visitation will be after 2:00 p.m. with the family present from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Thursday at the United Reformed Church.

The service will be livestreamed on the church website, www.doonurc.org. The family prefers memorials be directed to the Christian School of your choice. The Porter Funeral Home in Rock Valley is assisting the family.

Leonard "Red" Van Bemmel, son of Albert and Gertrude (Van Tol) Van Bemmel, was born on January 18, 1937 near Doon, Iowa on the family farm. He attended Doon Christian School and Western Christian High School. He enlisted in the US Army in 1955 and while stationed in Germany he married Sonja Ruth Andres in Ludwigsburg on June 1, 1957. They moved to Doon in 1959. Leonard worked various jobs in the area including at the Doon Coop. In 1973, he purchased the Doon Coop and operated it as "Red’s Service" until 1999.

He served as an elder and deacon in the Doon Christian Reformed Church. He was currently a member of the Doon Protestant Reformed Church. He loved travelling back to Germany, while Ruth was alive and also after Ruth passed away. Red enjoyed visiting with friends and family. He spent many years playing fast-pitch softball, raising cattle, and tending his farm north of Doon. He was a man of deep faith and testified that his only comfort was that he belonged body and soul to his faithful Savior Jesus Christ.

Red is survived by 5 children, Rainer (Diane) Van Bemmel of Doon, Patsy (Dennis) Vander Schaaf of Matlock, Iowa, Glenn (Deb) Van Bemmel of Doon, Kathleen (Harlan) Harmelink of Sioux Center, Iowa, and Mike (Lori) Van Bemmel of Doon; 3 siblings, Gertrude Van Den Top of Hull, Iowa, Marie (Jack) Van Dam of Lake Wilson, Minnesota and Marion (Carol) Van Bemmel of Luverne, Minnesota; 20 grandchildren; and 38 great-grandchildren.

Red was preceded in death by his wife of 44 years, Sonja Ruth; son, Alan Van Bemmel; daughter-in-law, Gloria Van Bemmel; infant brother, Henry; 2 brothers, Henry Paul Van Bemmel and Alvin Van Bemmel; and great-grandchildren, Kane Van Bemmel, Belle Van Bemmel, and Brynn Key.

Doon, Iowa: On February 5, 2014 at the age of 72 years, Alvin Van Bemmel of Doon, Iowa was taken to his heavenly home, where he sits at the feet of Jesus and SEES the glory of the Savior’s face, far removed from the sufferings of his earthly pilgrimage. A funeral service will be 11:00 a.m., Monday, February 10, 2014 at the Doon United Reformed Church with Rev. Simon Lievart officiating. Burial will be prior to the service at 10:00 a.m. at the Hillside Cemetery in Doon. Visitation with the family will be 3:30-5:30, Sunday, February 9, 2014 at Porter Funeral Home in Rock Valley, Iowa. Alvin was born on May 7, 1941 to Albert and Gertie (Van Tol) Van Bemmel. He attended the Doon Christian School through the eighth grade. From 1961 to 1963, Alvin proudly served his country as a member of the U.S. Navy. He married Wilma Post on January 5, 1965 and together they farmed near Doon, Iowa. Later they bought the Corner Café in Doon. Alvin faithfully served as a board member of the Doon Christian School as he strongly believed in a Christian Education. He also served as a deacon in the Doon Christian Reformed Church.

Alvin is survived by his beloved wife, Wilma, of 49 years; children and grandchildren, who will all miss him greatly: Scott (Marsha) Van Bemmel of Doon, and Christine, Grant, Ross and Jesse; Mark (Dana) Van Bemmel of Columbia, MD, and Sam and Eli; Travis (Ronda) Van Bemmel of Hudsonville, MI and Mason, Calvin, Emma, Natalie, Tessa, and Mallory; and Lance Van Bemmel of Doon; brothers, Leonard Van Bemmel and Marion (Carol) Van Bemmel; sisters, Marie (Jack) Van Dam and Gert Van Den Top; brothers and sisters-in-law, Mary Ann Van Bemmel, Ken (Tracy) Post, Willard (Janet) Post, and Marv (Joan) Post; and father-in-law, Simon Post.
