Obituary of Hattie
Memorial service held for Hattie Kammerer

A memorial service was held on Saturday, Nov. 8, 1997 at the United Church of Primghar with the Rev. Richard Dunn officiating. Hattie Kammerer's ashes were buried with her husband Herman in the Primghar Cemetery during a private family committal service before the memorial service held at the church. Music included a solo, "How Great Thou Art," sung by Hattie's daughter, Betty Cummings, and accompanied by her daughter-in-law, Edith Kammerer. Two grandchildren, Jean Schaffert and Daniel Kammerer, sang a duet of "Amazing Grace," accompanied by guitar, and the congregation sang the hymn "Nearer, My God, to Thee." A fellowship time for family and friends followed the service and was served by the church women.

Hattie DeKruif Kammerer was born Dec. 5, 1910 in Hospers, to Ralph and Hattie DeKruif, Dutch immigrants from Veenendaal, Holland. After a short illness, Hattie died on Oct. 27, 1997, in Phoenix, Az., at the age of 86 years.

On June 19, 1929 Hattie married Herman John Kammerer and they farmed near Primghar for 29 years. In 1958 they retired to Phoenix, Az. Her beloved husband Herman preceded her in death on May 22,1975 after 44 years of marriage. Hattie loved being a farmer's wife, working the garden, doing the chores, and sharing her life with Herman on the farm. After Herman's death she cared for the people of the complex where they lived, drove them to appointments, and shared her love of cooking and baking, especially the lemon pies she made for her many friends around the block.

Hattie was preceded in death by her husband, Herman; two sisters, Johanna and Cornelia; and a brother, Walter.

She is survived by her son, Don Kammerer and his wife Edith of Greeley, Co.; her daughter, Betty Cummings and her husband Richard of Milwaukee, Wi.; her son, Jim Kammerer and his wife Jayne of Tucson, Az.; and her son, Ron Kammerer of Flagstaff, Az. She is also survived by 12 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; a brother, Ralph DeKruif and wife Lois of Hemet, Ca.; and a sister, Marie DeRidder of Primghar, along with other relatives and her many friends.
