John Vande Weerd, Sr., who has been confined to his home for the past three weeks with diabetes and for the past ten days in the Sacred Heart Hospital in Le Mars, died of a gangrenous infection in his foot. Mr. Vande Weerd had lived to the age of 81 years.

John Vande Weerd was born January 31, 1863, at Ede, province of Gelderland, in the Netherlands, where he grew to manhood coming to the United States in the spring of 1886. He located at Orange City where on March 24, 1887, he married Miss Henricks Buitenhuis. They resided in Orange City vicinity for 18 years, later going to Crookston, Minnesota, where they made their home for ten years. They came to Rock Valley 29 years ago.

He was a member of the First Reformed Church. Mr. and Mrs. Vande Weerd celebrated their 57th wedding anniversary last March. To this union were born 12 children, one son dying in infancy and one daughter, Antonia, Mrs. Henry Kempema, passed on October 6, 1942. The children who with their mother survive are Mallis, Herman, Katie, Mrs. William Vande Velde, John, Bert, Arthur, Marie, Mrs. Theodore Bauman, all of Rock Valley; Hattie, Mrs. Myron Babbs, Ashmore, Illinois; Henrietta, Mrs. John Vanden Berg, Sioux Falls; and Henry in the United States Army at Camp Benda, Oregon. Also 31 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. One brother, Henry Vande Weerd Sr., of Rock Valley also survives.

Funeral services were held Friday at 1:30 at the home and 2:00 at the First Reformed Church of which he was a member, conducted by Reverend H.J. Aberson. Mrs. Jake Vande Weerd and Mrs. William Wissink sang "Beyond the Sunset" as a duet. Interment was made in Valley View Cemetery. Pallbearers were Charles Gayer, John Vander Poel, Dick Ver Doorn, William Scholten, George Middle and Gordon Dearborn.

Obituaries of Ted and Mary
Ted Bauman, 53, died at a hospital at St. Petersburg, Fla. Thursday evening after suffering a heart attack. Funeral services were held at the Methodist Church here Wednesday afternoon and burial in theValley View cemetery. Mrs. Bauman and daughter, Mrs. Chas. Jackson were expected to arrive here Monday.

Ted was very well known here having operated the South Side Service for over twenty years, selling out about two years ago and going to Florida.

Survivors include his son Bradley, his mother, Mrs. Ann Bauman, four brothers, Bernard of California, Henry, Paul and John, and a sister, Mrs. Richard Tank of Rock Valley and some grandchildren, besides the widow and daughter Delores.

Mary Marie Bauman, 79, of Tallahassee, Fla., formerly of Rock Valley, died Sunday, April 23, 1989, in the Tallahassee Memorial Hospital. Services were held at 10:30 a.m. Friday in Pioneer United Methodist Church in Rock Valley with the Rev. Ron Johnson officiating. Burial was in Valley View Cemetery. Visitation was held at the Porter Funeral Home in Rock Valley.

Mrs. Bauman, the former Mary Marie Vande Weerd, was born Dec. 13, 1909, in Andover, Minn., and graduated from Rock Valley High School. She married Theodore "Ted" Bauman Dec. 9, 1930. The couple owned and operated the Southside Service Station in Rock Valley until moving to St. Petersburg, Fla., in 1959. He died in December 1959.

She moved to Daytona Beach, Fla., after his death where she was a librarian at the City Island Library. In 1985 she moved to Tallahassee. Mrs. Bauman was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Tallahassee.

Survivors include a son, Bradley and his wife, Delores of Sioux City; a daughter, Mrs. Charles (Dolores "Lolly") Jackson of Tallahassee; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
