Alice was born November 30, 1919 in Harrison, South Dakota to Cornelius and Kate (Paauw) Van Zanten. As a child her family moved to a farm in the Colton area, interrupted by a move to Grand Rapids, Michigan for several years. She attended Clear Lake County School.
Alice married Walter Burgers on January 15, 1952. They were married for 52 years before Walter passed away in 2004. They were engaged in farming until 1968, they then operated the Colton Bakery until 1980 and the café in Colton for several years. Alice later worked at the Good Samaritan Center in Sioux Falls into her 80’s.
She was a member of Faith Community Church in Colton. She has lived the last several years at Sunnycrest Retirement Village. She always enjoyed a game of Scrabble or Rummikub. She is lovingly remembered by family and friends for her strong faith in her Savior, Jesus Christ as well as for her loving spirit, generosity, and strong work ethic.
