Sylvia Kelderman, daughter of William and Jennie Bouma Van Weelden Sr., was born July 8, 1916, south of Oskaloosa in Harrison Township, the second of fourteen children. She received her education in rural schools through the 8th grade, and then helped her parents at home and by working for other families doing housework and babysitting. Sylvia married Garrit Kelderman April 24, 1936, in Oskaloosa. Together they farmed and milked cows in the Oskaloosa and Kirksville areas. In addition to her work on the farm, Sylvia cleaned homes for several families in the Oskaloosa area.
In 1992, Sylvia and Garrit moved into Oskaloosa and after 64 years of marriage, Garrit passed away November 14, 2000. Due to health problems Sylvia moved to White Oak Estates in 2002. Sylvia was a member of the First Christian Reformed Church. She enjoyed gardening, especially growing flowers and truly had a green thumb. She also enjoyed quilting and ceramics.
Besides her parents, Sylvia was preceded in death by her husband, Garrit; a daughter, Ellen in infancy; a great grandson, Tyler Howard; three brothers: an infant brother and Peter and William Jr. Van Weelden; a sister, Jean Boender and a son-in-law: Everitt Roozeboom.
