Gerrit Pluim, 74, dies at S-Center; rites on Wednesday

SIOUX CENTER - Funeral services for Gerrit Pluim, 74, who died Sunday at his home in Sioux Center, were held Wednesday at the First Christian Reformed church with Rev. B. J. Haan officiating. Burial was in the Sioux Center community cemetery.

Mr. Pluim was born July 22, 1885, in The Netherlands and came to this country with his parents at the age of 6, settling in the Sioux Center vicinity shortly thereafter. He married Tracy Vlieger in 1907. She died in 1919 and he married Mrs. Johanna Willemstyn in 1927.

Survivors include five sons - Art of Hull; Alvin of Dubuque; Harvey of Orange City; and Kenneth and Donald, both of Sioux Center; three daughters - Mrs. Andy Muehl of Dubuque; Mrs. George Goodrick of Arlington, Va.,. and Mrs. Bill Korver of Maurice. Also surviving are three stepdaughters, Mrs. Carl Torwelle of Sioux City, Mrs. Ed Schaap of Orange City, and Mrs. John Alafs .of Grand Rapids, Mich.; a stepson, William Willemstyn, of Orange City; 35 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; four brothers - Gysbert, John and Walter, all of Alton, and Peter, residing in California; and three sisters - Mrs. William, de Vos of Ireton, Mrs. Fred Vander Naald of Hospers, and Mrs. George de Kruif of Orange City.

Obituary of Harvey
Harvey Pluim, 53, Orange City, owner of Pluim Publishing Co., died Wednesday, September 15 while on a fishing trip at Savant Lake in Canada. Services were at 10:30 a.m. Saturday in the First Christian Reformed Church in Orange City. The Rev. Thomas C. Vanden Heuvel officiated. Burial was in Westlawn Cemetery. Visitation was from 7:30 to 9 p.m. Friday in the Van Gelder Funeral Home in Orange City.

Mr. Pluim was born July 1, 1929, in Sioux Center. He graduated from Sioux Center high school and attended Northwestern College. He served with the Air Force during the Korean War. He married Hildred Huisman Nov. 20, 1951, in Orange City.

He owned and operated the Pluim Publishing Co., which publishes the Capitol, the Democrat and the Adviser. He served as president 27 years. He also was founder and president of Northwest Realty. He was a member and elder of the First Christian Reformed Church. He was a former Lions Club officer, past president of the Chamber of Commerce and served on the Tulip Festival Steering Committee. He was past president of the Shoppers Guide of Iowa, served on the board of directors of the National Advertisers and Publishers Association and was on the board of the Publication of Christian Reformed Churches of America.

Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Mrs. Bob (Linda) Hulstein and Mrs. Kevin (Lisa) Tesch, both of Orange City; two sons, Dan W. of Orange City and Dale at home; two brothers, Kenneth of Sioux Center and Don of Hull; two half-brothers, William Willemstyn of Orange City and Alvin Lonjers of Dubuque; three half-sisters, Mrs. Ed (Becky) Schaap of Orange City, Mrs. John (Cora) Alofs of Grand Rapids, Mich, and Mrs. Bill (Laura) Korver of Maurice and seven grandchildren.

A memorial has been established in Mr. Pluim's name with the Tuition Aid Fund of the Christian Reformed Church.

Hildred Pluim Vande Berg
November 25, 1930 - August 15, 2020

Mrs. Hildred Pluim Vande Berg, age 89, of Orange City, passed away on Saturday, August 15, 2020, at the Prairie Ridge Care Center in Orange City.

There will be a memorial service on Thursday, August 20, at 2:30pm, at the First Christian Reformed Church in Orange City. The Rev. Mark Vande Zande will officiate. Interment will be prior to the service at the West Lawn Cemetery in Orange City. There will be a private family prayer service on Thursday, at 1:30pm, at the Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City.

Hildred was born on November 25, 1930, in Orange City, the daughter of Herbert and Jessie (Kroeze) Huisman. She was raised in rural Orange City and graduated from the Newkirk Consolidated School. On November 20, 1951, she was united in marriage to Harvey Pluim, in Orange City, where they made their home and raised their four children. Harvey and "Hilly" established Pluim Publishing and Northwest Realty, both in Orange City. Harvey passed away suddenly on September 15, 1982, after more than 30 years of marriage.

Hilly and Maurice J. Vande Berg were married on June 12, 1986, in Orange City, where they continued to make their home. "Morry" passed away on August 24, 2017, in Orange City, after more than 31 years of marriage. Shortly after Morry’s death Hilly became a resident of the Landsmeer Ridge Retirement Community in Orange City. Earlier this year, she moved to the Prairie Ridge Care Center.

Hilly was a member of the First Christian Reformed Church in Orange City. She enjoyed playing card games (which she was very competitive), reading, and in her younger years, bowling.

Survivors include her four children and their spouses, Linda and Robert Hulstein; Daniel and Belinda Pluim; Lisa and Kevin Tesch; and Dale and Jill Pluim, all of Orange City; thirteen grandchildren, Nikki (Greg) Terpstra, Benji (Amy) Hulstein, Alissa (Jay) Schuiteman, Sarah (Paul) Birnbaum, Josh (Dana) Pluim, Caleb (Sarah) Pluim, Kelvin (Bridget) Tesch, Kurtis (Erin) Tesch, Kody Tesch, Klayton (Jessica) Tesch, Amber (Luke) Perry, JD (Nicole) Pluim, and Autumn Vorwald, 30 great-grandchildren, and two brothers, Ken Huisman and Marve Huisman.

In addition to her parents and husbands, she was preceded in death by four siblings, William Huisman, Etta Van Steenwyk, Gerrit Huisman, and Stan Huisman.

Memorials may be directed to the Orange City Area Home Health and Hospice.

Obituary of Hildred Huisman

Donald Pluim, age 78, of Hull, passed away on Saturday, February 2, 2013, at his residence. Donald was born October 31, 1934, in Sioux Center, Iowa, the son of Gerrit and Johanna (Visser) Pluim. Don married Jennie "Snooks" Van Bemmel on June 8, 1956, in Orange City, Iowa. To this union four children were born: David, Verla, Ruthann, and Glenn.

Don grew up in Sioux Center, where he attended Sioux Center Christian School and graduated from Sioux Center High School in 1953. In 1960, he graduated from Sioux City Barber College. Don started working at a young age, delivering newspapers and later delivering bottled milk to homes before school. One of the benefits of the milk route was to be able to drink all the buttermilk he wanted and then go to school and sleep through class. He had work experience in construction, factories, driving a ready mix truck, and traveling, putting up government grain bins. Most of his life, he spent as a professional painter and barber in Hull (10yrs) and Orange City (20yrs). He also owned Town & Country Hardware in Hull from 1972 to 1982. Don and Jennie lived in Michigan from 1986 to 1991, where Don painted for Bolkema Decorating.

Don loved to hunt pheasants, and he enjoyed fishing in Canada with his brothers for many years. He never turned down an opportunity to help his children in many of his talented areas, whenever they needed him. Don was active in the Hull Business Club for twenty years. He was a member of Hope Christian Reformed Church in Hull more than 44 years, serving as a deacon and attending Bible Study.

Left to cherish his memory and thankful for having been part of his life are his wife of more than 56 years, Jennie; three children and their spouses; Dave and Laura (Kiel) Pluim, of Hull; Verla and Alvin Hoogland, of Sioux Center; and Ruthann Haverhals, of Sioux Center; grandchildren, Darren and Monica Pluim, Amy and Shawn McGillivary, Travis Pluim, Jamalyn and Scott Mulder, Amber and Tom De Jong, Justin Hoogland, Aaron Hoogland, Jina and Dan Tinklenberg, Andy Hoogland, Jacki Hoogland, and Katie Van Schepen; ten great-grandchildren, Daylen and Deker Mulder, Jaidyn, Isaac, Caleb, and Jacob De Jong, Daylea and Case Tinklenberg, Hunter Van Schepen, and Ainslee Pluim; two sisters-in-law, Hildred (Maurice) Pluim Vande Berg, of Orange City and Faye Pluim, of Sioux Center, and a brother-in-law Harold (Thelma) Van Bemmel, of Orange City.

Waiting to greet him on the other side are his parents, 4 yr. old son, Glenn (1968); three brothers, Albert, Harvey,and Ken Pluim, and half-brothers and half-sisters, Art (Nancy) Pluim, Alvin (Irene) Loanjers, Ruth (Andy) Muehl, Polly (George) Goodrick, Laura (Bill) Korver, Mabel Pluim, Clara (Carl) Torwelle, Becky (Ed) Schaap, Bill (Alleta) Willemstyn, and Cora (John) Alofs.
