Catherine J. (Vande Hoef) Bowden was born April 9, 1926 on a farm northeast of Hawarden, Iowa, the daughter of Ed and Agnes (Vander Mei) Vande Hoef. She married Thayne Bowden on January 26, 1943. Catherine worked for the West Sioux Schools in the hot lunch program for many years and was a child care provider in her home. She was happiest after her retirement when she and her 25 year companion, Richard Hurt, moved to the farm in Nebraska. Together they enjoyed traveling, fishing on the home place, and visiting casinos. Catherine returned to Hawarden in 2002. She was a longtime member of the Associated Church in Hawarden and was a huge Iowa Hawkeye fan.
Survivors include her four children, Kay Schnoor of Minneapolis, Minnesota, Lonnie Bowden and wife Karen of West Liberty, Iowa, William Bowden and Trudy Paul of Hawarden, and Mark Bowden and wife Kathie Petrie of Sioux City; grandchildren, Justin Schnoor and Amanda, Matt Schnoor and fiance' Amanda Hanson, Nathan Bowden, Kama Johnson, Ben Johnson, Jed Johnson, Paula Wilson and husband Brett, Emma Petrie-Smith, and Lizzie Petrie-Smith; two great-grandchildren, Kaia Schnoor and Kemper Bowden; her sisters, Joann Winterfeld of Ireton, Iowa, Agnes Kleinhesselink of Hixson, Tennessee, Edna Royston and husband Tom of Mitchell, South Dakota, and Charlene Lill and husband Dean of Hawarden; sisters-in-law, Mary Vande Hoef of Denver, Colorado and Hazel Vande Hoef of Nederland, Texas; and many nephews and nieces.
Catherine was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Adrian in infancy, Adrian, Harold, Tuenis "Tony", and Richard "Dickie"; also a great-grandson, A. J. Schnoor; 3 nephews; and 2 nieces.
Catherine was a tissue donor through the Iowa Donor Network following her death.
Thayne was born on the family farm near Ireton, Iowa on August 28, 1922 to Frank and Clara (Watkins) Bowden. He was the second of seven children. He graduated from Ireton High School in 1940.
Thayne and Catherine VandeHoef were married in 1944. To this union four children were born. Thayne married Sue Wohlert on September 17, 1976. Thayne farmed northwest of Ireton for several years, moving to Hawarden in 1957. He held several jobs there over the years, including bookkeeper at L.G. Everist, and manager at American Cyanamid. He and Sue owned and operated a mini-golf course in Hawarden.
Thayne served in the United States Marine Corps during World War II. He was a star pitcher for Ireton high school and played semi-professional baseball after his discharge from the Marines. His claim to fame was that he pitched a perfect game once and seven no-hitters! Sue and Thayne moved to Texas and later, to Arizona, where they enjoyed over 30 years living in the Mesa area. He was an avid gun collector, enjoyed skeet shooting and creating craft projects.
Thayne is survived by his wife of 38 years, Sue; his four children: Kay Schnoor, Minneapolis; Lonnie (Karen) Bowden, West Liberty, IA; Bill Bowden (Trudy Paul), Hawarden; Mark Bowden (Kathie Petrie), Sioux City; and step-son, Fred Wohlert, Sioux City. He is also survived by his sisters: Ardel Smit and Velda Juffer, both of Sioux Center and Wanda Kuchel, Omaha and 13 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers; Homer and Dean, his sister, Betty and great-grandson, AJ Schnoor and brothers-in-law, Gaylen Kuchel, Delmar Smit and Gerald Juffer.
Hazel (Sue) May Bowden, 87, of Mesa, Arizona, and formerly of South Sioux City, Nebraska, passed away on February 4, 2019. A Graveside service will be scheduled at a later date under the care of Porter Funeral Home in Hawarden, Iowa. Hazel was the third of three children born to John and Lucille Peters. She was born and raised on a ranch in Ashby, Nebraska, where she attended a country school. Her freshman year in high school, her family moved from the ranch to town.
She married Robert Wohlert in 1949 and a son was born from this union. They traveled with the Burlington CBNQ Railroad making their home in a railcar until their son, Freddie Wohlert, was 5 years old. They traveled to 32 states before making their home on a farm in Missouri. Later, they moved to Michigan then to South Sioux City, NE, where she was employed by Iowa Beef Packers (IBP) for 3 years. Next, she was the office manager/bookkeeper for Burns Trucking in South Sioux City, NE, for many years.
She married Thayne Bowden from Hawarden, IA, and they made their home in Hawarden, where they owned and operated the Bowden Golf Range and Mini-golf Course. They enjoyed wintering in Texas for four winters where she and Thayne made many friends and enjoyed selling their crafts. They sold their home in Hawarden, IA, and moved to Mesa, AZ, in 1983. They spent the next 20 years making and selling crafts and attending craft shows. They loved to travel and enjoyed their 38 years together prior to Thayne's death in 2014.
Survivors include her son, Fred Wohlert, Sioux City, IA, step-children, Kay Schnoor, Chrystal, MN, Lonnie Bowden, West Liberty, IA, Bill Bowden, Hawarden, IA, and Mark Bowden, Sioux City, IA, and seven great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her brothers, Dick Peters, Hyannis, NE, Tommy Thomas, Ferndale, WA, and a sister, Martha Perez, San Jose, CA.
She was preceded in death by Thayne Bowden, her beloved husband, her father, John Peters and her parents, Dan and Lucille (Peters) Phelps, her brother, Pete Peters, a nephew, Steven Peters, great-grandson, AJ Schnoor and daughter-in-law, Vikki (Howard) Wohlert.

Joann Arlene Winterfeld, the daughter of Evert and Agnes (Vander Mei) Vande Hoef was born March 10, 1929 near Hawarden, Iowa. She married Julius Winterfeld on March 10, 1947 in the Peace Lutheran Parsonage near Sioux Center, Iowa. Five children were born of this union, Judy, Sharon, Diane, Paul, and Lori. They farmed near Ireton, Iowa for 28 years. Julius died July 22, 2000.
Joann was a beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great-grandmother. She was known to all as Grandma Joann. She was a loving Christian example to her family and friends. Grandma Joann baby sat over 150 children. She was a charter member of the St. Paul's Ladies Aid and taught Sunday School. Joann loved to play piano by ear and sang her whole life. She was an avid gardener and loved to can. Joann made the best potato salad in the world. She had the cleanest laundry in town and could patch any pair of jeans. She was grateful for her hard- working sons-in-law.
Survivors include her children, Judy Woehler of Benkelman, Nebraska, Sharon (Fred) Peters of Littleton, Colorado, Diane (Darold) Jamtgaard of Emmetsburg, Iowa, and Lori (Ral) Longworth of Montevideo, Minnesota; 13 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and 2.5 great-great-grandchildren; her sisters, Agnes Kleinhesselink of Hixon, Tennessee and Charlene (Dean) Lill of Hawarden, Iowa; 3 sisters-in-law, Hazel Vande Hoef of Murfreesboro, Tennessee, Mary Vande Hoef of Aurora, Colorado, and Phyllis Winterfeld of Ireton, Iowa; and a brother-in-law, Duane (Marlene) Winterfeld of Le Mars, Iowa.
Joann was preceded in death by her parents; husband; son, Paul Winterfeld; grandson, Ben Winterfeld; 5 brothers; 2 sisters; and 2 brothers-in-law.

Mr. Whittington was born August 21, 1929 at Hawarden, the son of Harley and Grace (Morey) Whittington. He graduated from the Hawarden High School in 1948 and served in Japan with the US Air Force.
Bill married Edna Vande Hoef in 1951 in Hawarden. He farmed in the Hawarden area until 1972. He drove truck long distance and then worked and later managed the Hawarden Ready Mix until retiring in 1991. Bill was a member of the Eagles, American Legion, VFW and Associated Church all of Hawarden.
Survivors include 4 sons, Dennis of Hawarden, Dean and wife Andrea of Black Hawk, SD, David and wife Jennifer of Boise, ID and Drew of Minneapolis, MN; special friend, Nancy Schiefen of Hawarden; brother, Richard Whittington of Cupertino, CA; sister, Edith Pryor of Roseville, CA; and 8 grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by 2 daughters, Amy Jo and Lynn; and a dister, Neva.
