Della and Henry R. Van De Berg

VAN DE BERG, HENRY R. AND DELLA (KROON)

Henry R. and Della (Kroon) Van De Berg lived on their farm one mile east of "Kroons Corner" all the years they ware engaged in farming. In 1964 they retired and took up residence at 304 2nd Ave. S.E. in Sioux Center. There Henry spent many hours playing pool and checkers with his children and grandchildren, while Della kept coffee and fresh goodies made for everyone who stopped by. Both of them ware life long members of the First Reformed Church, where Henry served as a deacon. In March 1970, Henry became ill with leukemia, and he passed away on June 22 of that year. In 1988, Della moved into the Sioux Center Hospital Nursing Wing where she still resides and enjoys her many visitors.

Henry was born to Ralph J. and Ella (Kosters) Van De Berg on September 26, 1906, on the farm two miles east and a half north of Sioux Center where he grew to manhood. He had three brothers and three sisters. He was the director of rural school Welcome #8 for several years.

Della's parents ware Henry D. and Hattie (Van Roekel) Kroon. She was born on January 21, 1907, near Perkins, and grew up with her seven sisters and four brothers on several farms north and east of Sioux Center.

They were married on a Saturday night, January24, 1931, at the home of Rev. and Mrs. L.A. Brunsting. Because of extremely deep ruts in the roads, they had to go in a horse drawn carriage, and only the groom's father was able to be present with them for the ceremony. Their honeymoon was an overnight stay at the home of her sister and husband, the Peter A. Punt's.

On May 6, 1932, their first child, Elma Ruth, was born, followed by Verna on May 3, 1934; Harold born on October 19, 1936; Eldora, born January 15, 1939; Hendrene, born December 21, 1940; Ralph, born November 28, 1942; Wilmer James, born March 4, 1944; and Ardith June, born May 23, 1946. They attended rural school Welcome #8 and the Sioux Center Public Schools.

Elma married Lloyd Van Roekel in 1951; they farmed in the Sioux Center and Newkirk area until they moved into Sioux Center in 1988. Their three children are Mark (wife - Brenda De Wild) of Orange City; Paul (wife - Linda Holwerda) of Sioux Center; and Janet (Mrs. Brian Amundson) of Eau Claire, Wisconsin.

Verna married Arend Sandbulte in 1953, their home is Duluth, Minnesota, where he is President of Minnesota Power. They have four children: Ruth (Mrs. Arlan Peterson), Greg (wife - Cheryl Carlson), Rachel - Mrs. Bruce Ostrander), all of Duluth and Kristi (Mrs. Jeff Melby) of New Brighton, Minnesota.

Harold married Joan Schoep in 1957, they live at Garretson, South Dakota, where Harold is farming. Their children are: Carol (Mrs. Bruce Boelman) of Luverne, Minnesota, Vern (wife- Nancy Van Ruler) of Luverne Minnesota, Norlyn (wife - Sandy Donelen) of Garretson, Sharla (Mrs. Tom Trutwin) of Little Falls Minnesota, David (wife - Angela Niessink) of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and Loren and Paul are at home. A son Paul died in infancy.

Eldora married Harold Van Zandbergen in 1960. they live near Newkirk, where they farm and operate a sports shop in their home. They have five children; Mikell (Mrs. Ali Rabih) of Denver, Colorado, Mavis (Mrs. James Schipper) of Hospers, Iowa, Robert (wife Robin Van Kalsbeek) of Orange City, Martha (Mrs. Darren Hulst) of Hospers, and Maria at home.

Hendrene married John J. Zoet in 1967, they farm near Hull, Iowa and have two children; Brian and Barbara.

Ralph and his wife, Mary Vander Esch, were married in 1964 and reside on the family farm one mile east of Sioux Center. They have two children: Scott (wife - Jolyn Stuit) of Plains, Kansas, and Leah is a student nurse in Sioux City, Iowa.

Wilmer married Wynetta Compaan,in 1968. They also farm near Sioux Center. They are the parents of five children: Michelle, Travis, Melanie, Troy, and Melinda.

Ardith of Sioux Center is a Kindergarten school teacher at Kinsey Elementary School in Sioux Center.

Funeral services will be held at the First Reformed Church here at 10 A.M., Thursday, June 25, for Henry R. Vande Berg, 63, retired Sioux Center farmer, and lifelong resident of the community, who died at the Sioux Center hospital Monday after a long illness. Services will be conducted by the Rev. Jack Boerigter and burial will be made in the Sioux Center Community cemetery under the direction of the Co-operative Funeral Home.

Mr. Vande Berg was born near Sioux Center September 26, 1906. He was married to Della Kroon of Sioux Center January 21, 1931.

Survivors include the widow, who resided at 304 Second Avenue Southeast, Sioux Center; eight children, Elma (Mrs. Lloyd Van Roekel) of Orange City, Verna (Mrs. Arend Sandbutte) of Duluth, Minn., Harold of Garrelson, S.D., Eldora (Mrs. Harold Van Zandbergen) of Hospers, Hendrene (Mrs. John Zoel) of Hull, Ralph of Hawarden, Wilmer of Sioux Center and Ardith of Sioux Center. Also surviving him are 19 grandchildren; three brothers, Ralph and John of Sioux Center and William of Sheldon, and two sisters, Gerda (Mrs. Tony Van Ravenswaay) and Minnie (Mrs. Henry Punt) both of Sioux Center.

Delia Van De Berg, 89, of Sioux Center died Monday, Jan. 20, 1997 at the Sioux Center Community Health Center. Services were held on Wednesday, Jan, 22 at 10:30 a.m. at Memory Gardens Cemetery in Sioux Center. A memorial service followed at 11:00 a.m. at the First Reformed Church in Sioux Center. Rev. Mark De Witt officiated. Memorial Funeral Home of Sioux Center was in charge of arrangements.

Delia was born Jan. 21, 1907 in Perkins, the daughter of Henry and Dirkje (Van Roekel) Kroon. She married Henry R. Van De Berg on Jan. 24, 1931 in Sioux Center. Mrs. Van De Berg was a member of the First Reformed Church of Sioux Center and the Naomi Circle.

Survivors include five daughters and their husbands, Elma R. and Lloyd Van Roekel of Sioux Center, Verna and Arend Sandbulte of Duluth, Minn., Eldora and Harold Van Zandbergen of Hospers, Hendrene and John Zoet Jr. of Hull, and Ardith Van De Berg of Sioux Center; three sons and their wives, Harold and Joan of Garretson, S.D., and Ralph and Mary and Wilmer and Wynetta, all of Sioux Center; 28 grandchildren; 51 greatgrandchildren; four step-great-grandchildren; four sisters, Cornelia Kroon, Margaret Voortman, Bernice Baker and Clarence Kroon, all of Sioux Center; and two brothers, Richard of Sioux Center and the Rev. William of Hampton.

She was preceded in death by her husband; a grandson; two sisters, Gertrude and Marilyn; and two brothers, Neal and Gerrit.

VAN ROEKEL, LLOYD AND ELMA (VAN DE BERG)

Lloyd and Elma (Van De Berg) Van Roekel.now reside at 335 7th Ave. S.E., after farming near Newkirk, IA, for 27 years. Prior to that they lived on the Van Roekel family acreage, where they farmed after Lloyd had served in the armed forces for two years.

Lloyd was born to Albert G. and Cena (Doornwaard) Van Roekel on May 16, 1929. His parents owned a dairy business, Lloyd helped make deliveries throughout the town daily, and sometimes two or three times daily. His father suffered from a heart condition for several years, and when he passed away in 1947, Lloyd farmed for his mother. He graduated from Sioux Center High School in 1948, and was reared in the Central Reformed Church. He has one brother, Gordon.

Elma was born on the farm one mile east of Sioux Center, to Henry R. and Della (Kroon) Van De Berg on May 6, 1932. She attended rural school, Welcome #8, and then graduated from Sioux Center High School. After graduating she worked at Van's Jewelry and then was employed at First National Bank. She has four sisters and three brothers: Verna, Harold, Eldora, Hendrene, Ralph, Wilmer, and Ardith. She was reared in the First Reformed Church.

Lloyd and Elma were married on June 28, 1951. In October of that same year, Lloyd had to sell out and report for two years of military service, all of which was spent at Fort Knox, Kentucky. Elma joined him there in August of 1952.

They have three children; Mark Douglas, Paul Vincent, and Janet Lynn. The children were all born in Sioux Center, they attended and graduated from Floyd Valley High School in Alton, IA and IA State University in Ames, IA.

Mark Douglas Van Roekel was born November 25, 1953, married Brenda De Wild on December 4, 1976. They lived at Fort Dodge, IA, where Mark was a partner in a hog operation, after graduating from IA State University with a degree in Farm Operation and Agriculture Business. Brenda taught school there. In 1988, they moved to the home farm near Newkirk, IA, with their two daughters, Sara Ann and Jessica Mae. Brenda now teaches elementary music in the Boyden Hull Schools.

Paul Vincent Van Roekel was born on December 21, 1955. He graduated from the College of Veterinary Medicine in 1980, and practiced in Wells Minnesota for two years, before joining a practice in Sioux Center. He married Linda Holwerda on November 25, 1988; they live near Sioux Center with their son, Heath. Linda is a surgical nurse at the Sioux Center Community Hospital.

Janet Lynn Van Roekel was born on November 5, 1959. She received her Home Economics degree in 1982. On June 12th of that year, she married Brian Amundson. They reside in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, where Brian is an electrical engineer with Northern States Power. They have two children, Heather Nichole and Eric Bradley.

4-H was an important part of the Van Roekel Family life; all three children ware active in their local clubs, and participated in out-of-state activities; Janet also earned a trip to the National 4-H Congress in Chicago, Lloyd was a club leader of the Floyd Falcons for several years. Elma served as secretary-treasurer for the Sioux County Youth Fair Board from 1969 to 1979.

Lloyd and Elma are members of the Newkirk Reformed Church where Lloyd has been a deacon and is presently serving as an elder.

Elma Van Roekel, 83, of Sioux Center, IA, died Monday January 11th, 2016, at Sioux Center Health.

A visitation will be held on Friday from 4-8PM, with the family present from 5-7PM at the New Life Reformed Church of Sioux Center.

A prayer service for family and friends will be held on Saturday at 10:00AM at the New Life Reformed Church of Sioux Center. Interment will follow the prayer service in Memory Gardens Cemetery of Sioux Center.

Elma Ruth Van Roekel was born May 6, 1932 to Henry R. and Della (Kroon) Van De Berg at Sioux Center, IA. She was a graduate of Sioux Center High School. Elma married Lloyd Van Roekel on June 28, 1951 at her parent's home.

As a young woman Elma worked at Van’s Jewelry and later First National Bank while Lloyd served in the US Army. For a time Elma joined Lloyd at Ft. Knox, Kentucky where she worked at a civilian payroll office.

Following Lloyd’s discharge from the army, they returned to Sioux Center where Elma was a member of Central Reformed Church. Later they settled near Newkirk, IA where they farmed for many years. Elma was a member of Newkirk Reformed Church and it was there she began singing as a member of the Melodaires Mixed Quartet for 37 years. In the 1980’s Elma and Lloyd purchased their home in Sioux Center where Elma became an active member of New Life Reformed Church.

Over the years Elma served as the secretary of the Sioux County Fair Board. She volunteered for the Sioux Center Chamber of Commerce welcoming 'newcomers' to Sioux Center and also was involved with Justice For All in Rock Valley. For many years Elma was known as an encourager to many through her many prayers and cards to others. She loved music and enjoyed being around people, especially her family.

Surviving is her husband of 64 years, Lloyd Van Roekel of Sioux Center; two sons and daughters-in-law: Mark and Brenda Van Roekel of Orange City and Paul and Linda Van Roekel of Sioux Center; daughter, Janet and Brian Amundson of Eau Claire, WI, six grandchildren and their spouses, 4 great grandchildren; two brothers and sisters-in-law: Ralph and Mary Van De Berg of Sioux Center and Wilmer and Wynetta Van De Berg of Sioux Center; three sisters and brothers-in-law: Verna and Arend Sandbulte of Duluth, MN, Hendrene and John Zoet of Hull, Ardith and Verdean Wynja of Sioux Center; sisters-in-law: Joane Van De Berg of Luverne, MN and Lois Van Roekel of Sioux Center.

Obituary of Harold

HAROLD VAN DE BERG was born on October 19, 1936 to Henry and Della (Kroon) Van De Berg in Sioux County, Iowa. Harold grew up in rural Sioux Center, Iowa. Harold was baptized on December 6, 1936 and later confirmed at the First Reformed Church in Sioux Center, Iowa. He attended Sioux Center Elementary School - Welcome #8.

On March 22, 1957 Harold was united in marriage to Joan Schoep at her parents’ home in Hull, Iowa. Following their marriage, the couple lived on a farm near Sioux Center, Iowa. In 1967, they moved to a farm near Garretson, South Dakota and remained there until their retirement in 2010 when they moved to Luverne, Minnesota.

On Monday, November 9, 2015 Harold died peacefully at the Good Samaritan Society - Mary Jane Brown Home in Luverne at the age of 79 years and 21 days. Harold was a member of the American Reformed Church in Luverne, where he served as a Deacon. Harold was a farmer throughout his life and he took great pride in being a steward to the land and his Lord. He enjoyed fishing and playing cards - including his favorite game, rook. He loved spending time with family and especially enjoyed attending his grandchildren’s events. Harold also loved hosting people. He made sure there was always time to sit, have a cup of coffee and enjoy some fellowship.

Harold will lovingly be remembered by his wife, Joan; seven children, Carol (Bruce) Boelman, Luverne, Vern (Nancy) Van De Berg, Luverne, Norlyn (Sandy) Van De Berg, Garretson, Sharla (Thomas) Trutwin, Cushing, Minnesota, David (Angela) Van De Berg, Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Loren (Monica) Van De Berg, Sioux Falls, and Paul (Tammy) Van De Berg, Brandon, South Dakota; siblings, Elma (Lloyd) Van Roekel, Sioux Center, Verna (Arend) Sandbulte, Duluth, Minnesota, Hendrene (John) Zoet, Hull, Iowa, Ralph (Mary) Van De Berg, Sioux Center, Wilmer (Wynetta) Van De Berg, Sioux Center, and Ardith (Verdean) Wynja, Sioux Center; 21 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

Obituary of Harold

Mr. Harold Van Zandbergen, age 86, of Newkirk, passed away on Monday, April 2, 2012, at the George Community Good Samaritan Center. There will be a memorial service on Thursday, April 5, at 11:00am, at the Newkirk Reformed Church. The Rev. David Powers will officiate. Interment will be prior to the service at the Newkirk Cemetery. There will be a prayer service on Thursday, at 9:45am, at the Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City. Visitation will be after 4:00pm on Wednesday, with the family present from 5:00pm to 7:00pm, at the funeral home.

Harold Forrest was born on June 22, 1925, in Orange City, the son of Arie and Trina (Hoffs) Van Zandbergen. He was raised in rural Newkirk, where he attended the Consolidated Schools. He served in the United States military during the Korean Conflict.

On January 15, 1960, he married Eldora Van De Berg in Sioux Center. They farmed at Newkirk, where he operated a corn shelling business and was also a gunsmith, owning Zandy's Repair. Eldora passed away on July 5, 2000, at Newkirk.

On January 20, 2001, he married Carol (Van Wyk) Mulder at Newkirk. They continued to live at Newkirk, until February of 2011, when they moved to the Pioneer Memorial Home in Orange City. In November of 2011, he transferred to the Good Samaritan Center.

Mr. Van Zandbergen was a member of the Newkirk Reformed Church, the Reuter American Legion Post in Hospers, the National Rifle Association, Pheasants Forever, and the Sioux County Cattleman's Association. He enjoyed hunting, especially with "The Hounds", fishing, going to gun shows, collecting guns, trap shooting, and playing cards and games. He looked forward to spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Survivors include his second wife, Carol; Harold and Eldora's five children and their spouses, Mikell and Ali Rabih, of Denver, Colorado; Mavis and Jim Schipper, of Hospers; Robert and Robin Van Zandbergen, of Orange City; Martha and Darren Hulst, of Hospers; and Maria and Chad Schwartz, of Primghar; eighteen grandchildren, Aussy Rabih, Mirian Rabih, Ahmad Rabih, Adam (fiance, Haley Williams) Rabih, Dora Rabih, and Layla Rabih; Crystal (husband, Ryan) Steffen; Melissa (husband, Bo) Ryan, Matthew Schipper, and Nathan Schipper; Chris Van Zandbergen, Kevin (wife, Katrin) Van Zandbergen, and Keith Van Zandbergen; Danielle Hulst, Zachary Hulst, and Josiah Hulst; and Braden Schwartz and Caleb Schwartz; four great-grandchildren; two brothers and their wives, Marion and Ruth Van Zandbergen and Adrian and Carol Van Zandbergen, all of Orange City; a special grand-nephew, Mark De Kock; a few nephews and nieces, several step-children, and many step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents and first wife, he was preceded in death by his first wife's parents, Henry and Della Van De Berg; a nephew, Ward Van Zandbergen; and a niece, Sarah Van Zandbergen.

Memorials will be directed to the Orange City Area Health System Hospital and Home Health and Hospice.

Ralph Van De Berg, 73 of Sioux Center, IA died on Saturday Aug. 6, 2016 at Sioux Center Health in Sioux Center, IA.

Services will be Wednesday Aug. 10, 2016 at Carmel Reformed Church of Carmel, IA at 10:30 am with Rev. Mike Pitsenberger officiating. A visitation will be held Tuesday Aug. 9, 2016 from 4-8 p.m. with family present from 5-7 p.m. at Memorial Funeral Home in Sioux Center. Prayer service will be at 9 a.m. Wednesday at Memorial Funeral Home with Interment to follow at Memory Gardens of Sioux Center.

Ralph was born Nov. 28, 1942 to Henry and Della (Kroon) Van De Berg at Sioux Center, IA. He was raised and educated near Sioux Center where he graduated from Sioux Center High School. He was a farmer-grain and livestock on the same farm where he was born. He also did part-time work for the city of Sioux Center and Sioux Preme Packing Company.

He married Mary Vander Esch on June 19,1964 at Sioux Center, IA at First Reformed Church. The couple then moved to the farm where Ralph was born and raised. They enjoyed sharing their gift of hospitality with everyone.

He was a member of Carmel Reformed Church. He will be remembered for helping out his neighbors and his willingness to give himself to others without any expectations of getting anything in return. He was a friend to many young and old and grew close relationships through the years. He was very content and happy with his life and legacy.

Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Mary Van De Berg of Sioux Center; his son, Scott (Jolynn) Van De Berg of Alton, IA; his daughter, Leah Van De Berg of Sioux Falls, SD; four grandchildren, Sarah (Chris) Van Beek of Alton, IA, Audra (Kevin) Christian of Sioux Center, IA, Weston (Kelsey) Van De Berg of Orange City, IA, Tyson Van De Berg of Alton, IA; two great-grandchildren; three sisters, Verna (Arend) Sandbulte of Duluth, MN, Hendrene (John J.) Mary Van De Berg, age 72, of Sioux Center, IA, died Monday, May 22, 2017 at her home near Sioux Center, IA.

Memorial service will be held at 10:30 AM Friday, May 26, 2017 at Carmel Reformed Church of Rock Valley, IA with Rev. Mike Pitsenberger and Rev. Bob Holtrop officiating.

Mary (Vander Esch) Van De Berg was born on February 1, 1945 to Leonard & Gertrude (Van Wyke) Vander Esch at Hawarden, IA. She was raised on a farm near Hawarden and later in town. She was educated at various schools near Hawarden and graduated from West Sioux High School in 1963.

Mary and Ralph Van De Berg were married on June 19, 1964 at Sioux Center, IA. The couple then moved to the farm where Ralph was born and raised. They enjoyed sharing the gift of hospitality of many people. Ralph passed away on August 6, 2016. Mary continued to live on the farm until her death. Mary had a very loving heart for many people. She was a member of area churches and enjoyed several Bible studies. Her current membership was at Carmel Reformed Church. She was well known in the community as she worked twenty-six years at the Fareway Grocery in the Meat department in Sioux Center.

Survivors include a son, Scott (Jolynn) Van De Berg of Alton, IA; daughter Leah Van De Berg of Sioux Falls, SD; four grandchildren, Sarah (Chris) Van Beek of Alton, IA, Audra (Kevin) Christian of Sioux Center, IA; Weston (Kelsey) Van De Berg of Orange City, IA, Tyson Van De Berg, Alton, IA; two great grandchildren, one brother, Lee (Marilyn) Vander Esch of Port Huron, MI, three sisters, Geri (Bob) DeBoom of Allen, TX, Linda (Stan) Dykstra of Bozeman, MT, Betty (Jim) Dunnam of Alcester, SD, three sisters-in-law, Verna (Arend) Sandbulte of Duluth, MN, Hendrene (John J.) Zoet of Hull, IA, Ardith (Verdean) Wynja, two brothers-in-law, Lloyd J. Van Roekel and Wilmer (Wynetta) Van De Berg, both of Sioux Center, IA: one sister-in-law Joan Van De Berg of Luverne, MN.

She was also preceded in death by her parents Leonard and Gertrude Vander Esch, Ralph’s parents Henry and Della Van De Berg, two sisters-in-law Elma Van Roekel, Eldora (Harold) Van Zandbergen, one brother-in-law Harold Van De Berg.
