Obituaries of Cornelius and Christina

Mr. Cornelius A. Kuyper was born October 2, 1880 at Orange City, Ia. where he spent his boyhood years and obtained his early education, graduating from the Northwestern Classical Academy.

Following up his education, he finished a course in dentistry at the Northwestern University of Chicago and practiced the same for seven years.

Ill health compelled him to give up his practice and he returned to his farm in Sioux county.

On March 15, 1917 he was married to Christina Van Roekel and to this union three children were born, namely, Maria Mathilda, Eugene Gordon, and Robert Murray, all at home.

Besides these, he leaves to mourn Elizabeth Schalekamp of Santa Ana, Calif. R. H. Schalekamp from Sheldon, Mrs. Merle McNutt from Sheldon, Mrs. Gerrit Noteboom of Orange City, Mrs. Mary Van Wyk from Santa Ana, Calif., Henry J. Schalekamp from Sioux Center, Mrs. Tena De Jong from Orange City, Miss Cynthia Schalekamp from Santa Ana, Calif., Mrs. Kate Orton from Sioux City and Neal Schalekamp from Orange City.

Mr. Kuyper was a member of the Central Reformed church of Sioux Center and served as deacon and elder for many years. He also served as director and treasurer of the Welcrme township school. He was a consecrated and consistent Christian, a kind husband and father, a good neighbor and friend, and a loyal citizen.

The community and friends mourn at this sudden departure, and extend their heart-felt sympathy to the bereaved.

Funeral services will be held at the Central Reformed church in Sioux Center Friday: Feb. 18 at 2 o'clock, Rev. Meengs officiating. Burial will be at Sioux Center.

Mrs. Christina Kuyper, 97, of Holstein, formerly of Sioux Center, died Saturday in a nursing home in Holstein.

Services were at 2 p.m. Tuesday in the Memorial Funeral Home in Sioux Center. The Rev. Frank Phillip of St. Paul Lutheran Church of Holstein officiated. Burial was in Memory Gardens Cemetery in Sioux Center.

Mrs. Kuyper, the former Christina Van Roekel, was born Feb. 6, 1888, at Sioux Center. She married Dr. C.A. Kuyper March 15,1917, at home in Sioux Center. He died in 1937.

She moved to Rock Valley in 1946 to live with her daughter. She later moved to Holstein. For the last five years, she had resided at the Good Samaritan Nursing Home in Holstein.

Mrs. Kuyper was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church and an honorary member of the ALCW.

Survivors include one daughter, Mrs, James (Maria) DeWit of Holstein; two sons, Eugene of Arkadelphia, Ark., and Robert of Georgetown, Texas; 12 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren and one great great grandchild.

Obituaries of James and Maria

James A. De Wit, 91, of Holstein died Tuesday, February 20, at the Holstein Good Samaritan Center.

Services were 2 p.m. Saturday at St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church with Pastor Curtis Benson officiating. Burial was in the Holstein Cemetery with full military rites by Dessel-Schmidt American Legion Post #225 of Holstein.

De Wit was born February 3, 1916, to Neal & Johanna (Zevenbergen) De Wit in Ocheyedan. He grew up in the Sioux Center area and graduated from Sioux Center High School in 1933. He worked at Smith's Bakery in Sioux Center until he was drafted in 1941.

He married Maria Kuyper on February 10, 1943, before being sent overseas.

After the war he worked in a bakery in Rock Valley where they lived. In 1953 the couple bought the bakery in Holstein which they ran until he retired in 1981.

In addition to being a wonderful baker, he was a gardener. He also loved to travel and while serving in the Army, he traveled to Holland. While in the U.S., he visited almost every state.

Those left to cherish his memory are his wife Maria of Holstein; his four children, Mary Jo Kindt and husband Allen of Vilas, North Carolina; Mark De Wit of Rockwall, Texas; Christine Keitges and husband Robert of Alamosa, Colorado, and James De Wit and wife Mary Ann of Bay Minette, Alabama; eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; his brother and sisters, Julius De Wit of Canby, MN; Adrianna Kuyper and husband Eugene of Arkadelphia, AR; Agnes Brawner of Galva, IL; Helen Vermeer and husband Loyd of Sioux Center, Edie Lubach and husband Howard of Sioux Center; Gene De Wit and wife Norma of Canby.

He was preceded in death by a son-in -law, Dennis Johnston; a granddaughter; and a great-grandson.


Maria M. De Wit, 89, of Holstein, IA, died August 2, at Cherokee Regional Center Medical Center in Cherokee.

Services were at 2 p.m. Friday at St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church with Rev. Curtis Benson officiating. Burial was in the Holstein Cemetery.

Mrs. De Wit was born Dec. 31, 1917, on a farm outside of Sioux Center to Neal and Christina (Van Roekel) Kuyper.

After graduating from Sioux Center High School in 1935 she went for teacher training at Westmar College in Le Mars. She taught in a one-room schoolhouse and taught kindergarten in Sioux County for seven years.

She married Jim De Wit on Feb. 10, 1943, before he was shipped overseas.

After WW II the couple moved to Rock Valley, where he worked in a bakery and she taught piano lessons and played the organ in church. In Holstein, which they ran until they retired in 1981.

She was always involved with music, playing the organ and conducting children's choirs at church and giving piano lessons to numerous area children. She Also worked five years at the Good Samaritan Center in Holstein.

She continued there for many years as a volunteer presenting musical skits and programs.

Survivors are her four children, Mary Jo Kindt and husband Allen of Vilas, NC, Mark De Wit of Rockwall, TX, Christine Keitges and husband Robert of Alamosa, CO, and James De Wit and wife Mary Ann of Bay Minette, AL; eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; one brother Eugene Kuyper and wife Adrianna of Arkadelphia, ARK; and many other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, James; one brother Robert Kuyper; one son-in-law Dennis Johnston; a granddaughter; and a great-grandson

Obituaries of Eugene and Adrianna

Dr. Eugene G. Kuyper of Arkadelphia, died November 23, 2010. He was 91 years old. He was born May 25, 1919 in Sioux Center, Iowa the son of the late Christina and Cornelius Kuyper.

He served in the U.S. Army in World War II, after which he attended college and received a Master of Music degree from the University of Nebraska. He was a professor of voice at Henderson State University for 29 years until his retirement in 1981.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Robert Kuyper, a sister Maria DeWit and a grandchild, Krystal Kuyper.

During his career at Henderson he began the tradition of the Madrigal Singers. He also enjoyed singing with a local barbershop quartet. He was a long-time member of the First United Methodist Church in Arkadelphia where he was a member of the choir for 58 years including 25 years as choir director.

He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Adrianna, and five children; Judy Jacob and husband Charles, of Little Rock, David Kuyper and wife Alice of Magnet Cove, Lee Kuyper and wife Pauline of Durham, North Carolina; Clark Kuyper and wife Pam of Arkadelphia; Karen Poe and husband Bill of Marietta, GA; twelve grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, November 27 at 10:00 AM in the First United Methodist Church at 9th and Caddo in Arkadelphia with the Rev Carroll Jackson officiating. Burial will follow at Rest Haven Memorial Gardens. Memorials may be made to the music ministry of First United Methodist Church in Arkadelphia.


Adrianna Kuyper of Arkadelphia, Ark., died Saturday, Aug. 25, one day before her 93rd birthday.

Funeral services are 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at First United Methodist Church of Arkadelphia with Pastor Carroll Jackson officiating. Burial is in Rest Haven Memorial Gardens.

Mrs. Kuyper was born in Middleburg to Johanna and Neal De Wit. She attended elementary and high school in Sioux Center and Westmar College in Le Mars, IA. She was a teacher in a one-room country school for five years from 1937-1942.

She married Eugene Kuyper in June 1942 and lived in Arkadelphia since 1952 when her husband joined the faculty at Henderson State University.

She was a member of the First United Methodist Church Choir for many years , and was also a member of the United Methodist Church Quilters, Susanna Wesley Circle, Clark County Retired Teachers Association and the Philharmonic Club.

She was in charge of Quality control department for Levi Strauss for 17 years. Her interests were quilting and other needlework, traveling, lots of reading since retirement in 1981, and spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

Survivors are Judy and Charles Jacob of Little Rock, David and the late Alice Faye Kuyper of Magnet Cove, Lee and Pauline Kuyper of Durham, N.C., Clark and Pam Kuyper of Arkadelphia and Karen and Bill Poe of Marietta, Ga.; siblings, Julius De Wit of Canby, Minn., Agnes Brawner of Galva, Ill., Edith Lubach of Sioux Center and Gene and Norma De Wit of Canby, Minn.; 12 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 68 years; her brother James De Wit; and a granddaughter.
