Funeral services for John G. Van Roekel of Sioux Center were held Wednesday afternoon at the home and at the First Reformed church with Rev. H. Colenbrander of Orange City officiating.
Pall bearers were Mr. Van Roekel's six sons. Burial was in the Sioux Center Community Cemetery and arrangements were under the direction of Vander Ploeg's Funeral Service of Sioux Center.
Mr. John G. Van Roekel passed away unexpectedly Saturday evening at the age of 64 years, 9 months and 11 days.
Mr. Van Roekel was united in marriage to Sarah Te Grotenhuis on February 10, 1915 and to this union six sons were born, Gershom of Hull; Warren of Hull; Clinton of George; Merle at home, Rev. James of Erie, Ill., and Arlin Duane also at home.
Besides his wife he is further survived by 13 grandchildren and the following brothers and sisters: Christine, Mrs. Neal Kuyper; Otto Van Roekel and Dr. Henry Van Roekel.
The following brothers and sister preceded him: Chris; Grace, Mrs. John B. Mouw; William; Albert and George.

Services were held at 10:30 a.m. Nov. 10 at the First Reformed Church, the Rev. Gerrit Rezelman officiating. Burial at Memory Gardens, Cooperative Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Former Sarah te Grotenhuis, born June 27, 1894 at Sioux Center. Married John G. Van Roekel Feb. 10, 1915 Sioux Center. He died in February 1955.
Survivors: Sons, Gershom and Warren of Hull, Clinton of George, Merle of Rock Rapids, Arlin of Sioux Center, the Rev. James of Waupon, Wise.; 15 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren.

Warren Van Roekel, 85, of Sioux Center, died early Wednesday morning, Nov. 23, 2005, at the Sioux Center Community Hospital in Sioux Center.
John Warren Van Roekel was born June 10, 1920, on the family farm near Sioux Center, one six sons born to the union of John G. and Sarah (Grotenhuis) Van Roekel. He was baptized and confirmed into the Christian faith. He attended country school near Sioux Center and later high school at Sioux Center High School where he graduated in 1938.
He was drafted into the United States Army in 1942. He served his country as a member of the John Deere Battalion #303 during World War II in England and Belgium. He was honorably discharged in 1946. Upon returning, he was united in marriage to Lillian Broek on Nov. 8, 1946, in Sioux Center. Together, they are the parents of three children, Lorene, Sharon, and Butch. The couple farmed north of Sioux Center for many years. Following his retirement, he went to work for Interstate Electric for 18 years, driving supplies to construction sites and doing various jobs around the shop.
Warren was a longtime member of First Reformed Church in Sioux Center, and the Veteran of Foreign Wars Post #6129 in Sioux Center. He and his wife enjoyed wintering in Arizona for many years. He loved his John Deere tractors and his Ford pickups. He enjoyed visiting with friends. He was handyman where he could fix just about anything. He will also be remembered for his humor. But most of all he loved the times spent with his family and he always looked forward to family get togethers. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
Survivors include his wife of over 59 years, Lillian of Sioux Center; three children, Lorene Rexwinkel and her husband, John of Le Mars, Sharon Punt and her husband, Paul of Chanhassen, Minn., and Butch Van Roekel and his wife, Jan of Sioux Center; six grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; four brothers, Clinton Van Roekel and his wife, Flossie of George, Merle Van Roekel and his wife, JoAnn of Rock Rapids, the Rev. James Van Roekel and his wife, Erma Jean of Des Moines, and Arlin D. Van Roekel and his wife, Alvina of Sioux Center; a sister-in-law, Edna Van Roekel of Fulda, Minn.; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Gershom Van Roekel.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at First Reformed Church in Sioux Center, with the Rev. Arnold Punt officiating. There will be a family prayer service at 9:45 a.m. on Saturday at the church with burial to follow in Memory Gardens in Sioux Center with military rites conducted by the Veteran of Foreign Wars Post #6129 and Doornink-Brusting American Legion Post #199 of Sioux Center. Visitation with the family present will be Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Memorial Funeral Home in Sioux Center. Arrangements are under the direction of the Carlsen Funeral Homes of Le Mars and Akron.
Honorary pallbearers will be his grandchildren: Tom Punt, Jill Eberle, Wendy Biddick, Jane Arnold, Neil Punt and Dan Rexwinkel.
Lillian Van Roekel, 81, of Sioux Center, Iowa, passed away Sunday, January 28, 2007 at her residence in Sioux Center.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, February 1, 2007 at First Reformed Church in Sioux Center, Iowa. Reverend Arnold Punt will officiate. There will be a family prayer service at 9:45 a.m.Thursday at the church with burial to follow in Memory Gardens in Sioux Center. Visitations with the family present will be from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, January 31, 2007 at Memorial Funeral Home in Sioux Center. Lillian Van Roekel was born November 29, 1925 in Sioux Center, Iowa, the daughter of Bert and Dena (Kempers) Broek. She attended country school and later Hull Western Christian school in Hull, Iowa. She was united in marriage to Warren Van Roekel on November 8, 1946 in Sioux Center, Iowa. Together, they are the parents of three children, Lorene, Sharon, and Butch. The couple farmed north of Sioux Center for many years. Lillian drove school bus for Sioux Center Community Schools. She had also worked as a Nurses aide for over 10 years at the hospital. She operated a catering business in Sioux Center for several years and later was a cook at Sioux Center Community Hospital. Warren passed away November 23, 2005 in Sioux Center. She was currently living at the Franken Manor Apartments in Sioux Center.
Lillian was a longtime member of First Reformed Church in Sioux Center and the Lydia's circle. She was also a member of the Hospital auxiliary and a volunteer at the hospital. She and her husband enjoyed wintering in Arizona. She enjoyed playing cards, gardening, and flowers. She loved to cook; a great joy for her was providing food for those in need. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
Survivors include her three children: Lorene Rexwinkel and her husband John of Le Mars, Iowa, Sharon Punt and her husband Paul of Chanhassen, MN, and Butch Van Roekel and his wife Jan of Sioux Center, IA; 6 grandchildren: Tom Punt and his wife Holly, Jill Eberle and her husband Dan, Wendy Biddick and her husband Jason, Jane Arnold and her husband Darren, Neil Punt and his wife Karen, and Dan Rexwinkel and his wife Lori; 14 great-grandchildren; 2 brothers: John Broek and his wife Delma of Sioux Center, IA, and Delbert Broek and his wife Annafeen of Sioux Center, IA; 2 sisters-in-law: Priscilla Broek and Thelma Broek both of Sioux Center, IA; a brother-in-law: Joe Van Roekel of Sioux Center; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; two brothers: Barney and David Broek; and a sister: Margaret Van Roekel.
Clinton Van Roekel age 99 of Sheldon formerly of George, Iowa passed away Wednesday,
September 8, 2021 at Sanford Sheldon Health Center in Sheldon.
There will be no public gathering at this time. There will be a celebration of life held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials directed to Hope Reformed Church in George or any charity of your choosing.
Clinton Christian Van Roekel was born May 21, 1922 to John G and Sarah (Te Grotenhuis) Van Roekel at their home four miles north of Sioux Center, Iowa. He was raised on the farm. His education was in rural school and Sioux Center High School, graduating in 1940, after which he continued working on the farm with his parents.
On August 21, 1947 he married Florence (Flossie) Scheffer in the Carmel Reformed Church. In March 1948 they moved to a farm on the south edge of George, Iowa in Lyon county. It was here they raised four sons, who all were involved in the dairy and diversified farming. Clinton continued this occupation to which he was dedicated and thoroughly enjoyed. He was a faithful member of the Hope Reformed Church where he served as deacon, elder and in other activities over the years. In the 1980's he served a term as a Lyon County Supervisor. In June 1980 they moved into their new home on the north edge of George. In March of 2020, they moved to Field Crest Senior Living in Sheldon, Iowa.
Clinton is survived by his wife of 74 years, Florence; his four sons, David (Arla) of George, IA, Dennis DVM. of Baldwin, WI, Paul (Shirlea) of George, Philip (Laura) of Ankeny, IA; also surviving are two granddaughters: Danielle (Jeff) Hrdlicka and Alisson(Isaac) Meyer; eight grandsons: Aaron (Beth), Kollin, Clint J (Laura), Kyle (Kim), Caleb (Casey), Matthew, Benjamin (Elizabeth) and Jacob (Emily) Van Roekel; 11 great grandchildren: Kylie (Zach) Morris, Sawyer (Sara) Hrdlicka, Kade, Conner, Cael, Grace, Jonathan, Anna Joy, Sylvia, Vivian, and Harper Van Roekel; 2 great great grandsons, twins, Aceston and Landrick of Kylie and Zach Morris; one brother, Arlin (Alvina) Van Roekel; as well as many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents John and Sarah Van Roekel and brothers: Gershom (Edna), Warren (Lillian), Merle (Jo Ann) and Reverend James (Erma Jean); great granddaughter, Makenzie Beth Van Roekel (Born sleeping- 12.3.2009); his wife's parents, Albert and Helena Scheffer and her siblings: Cornelius (Margaret) Scheffer, Emma (Esten) Brown, and Magdalena (Arie) Schimmel.
Erma Jean Van Roekel was taken home to be with the Lord on Monday, March 7, 2011.
He had given her over 80 years to live.
She was born on May 4, 1930 to John & Emma Van Wyk at Hull, IA. She attended Hull Public Schools and Central College at Pella, IA.
As a young person, she made Confession of her faith in Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior and followed Him with a lifetime commitment. She first met Jim Van Roekel at a District Christian Endeavor Youth Rally at Hull. They were married on August 10, 1950 and walked together with the Lord for over 60 years. After the wedding, they lived in Holland, Michigan where Jim attended Western Theological Seminary. Upon graduation, he was ordained as a minister in the Reformed Church in America. Together they served the Lord in churches in Illinois, Michigan, California, Wisconsin, Florida and IA. They retired to live in Urbandale, IA.
They were blessed with two daughters. Ruth, who married Tim Nelson and they were blessed with Michael, Anna and Sarah. They live at Hampton, IA. Mary, married Mark Den Hartigh and they were blessed with Matthew and Ashley. They live at Golden Valley, MN.
She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Emma Van Wyk and a brother, Norman. She is survived by her husband, Rev. James H. Van Roekel of Urbandale, her daughters and their families, a sister, Gladys Greying of Alton, IA. and a brother, Rev. Kenneth Van Wyk and his wife, Anita, of Boise, ID.
A Celebration of Thanksgiving will be held at Meredith Drive Reformed Church on Friday March 11, 2011, beginning with a Visitation Time from 9:00 to 10:30. A time of Worship and of Giving Thanks will follow from 11:00 -12:00. At a later date, there will be a graveside Committal Service at Alton, IA. Erma Jean's favorite Bible verse was Philippians 4:6-7. Her favorite hymn was "He Giveth More Grace." One of her favorite sayings was "Prayer has the longest arms."
Rev. James Van Roekel, age 90, of Orange City, passed away October 21, 2020, at
the Orange City Area Health System in Orange City, Iowa.
James Harold was born on November 10, 1929, to John and Sarah (Te Grotenhuis) Van Roekel, in Welcome Township, Sioux County, Iowa. He attended public schools there, Central College in Pella, Iowa, and Western Theological Seminary in Holland, Michigan. Upon graduation he was ordained as a minister in the Reformed Church in America.
On August 10, 1950, he married Erma Jean Van Wyk, and together they served churches in Illinois, Michigan, California, Wisconsin, Florida, and Iowa. Erma Jean passed away on March 7, 2011, after more than sixty years of marriage.
Survivors include his two daughters and their husbands, Ruth and Tim Nelson, of Independence, Iowa, and Mary and Mark Den Hartigh, of Minneapolis, Minnesota; five grandchildren, Michael Nelson, of Johnston; Anna, and her husband, David Jabbari, of Tiffin; Sarah Nelson, of Madison, Wisconsin; Matthew Den Hartigh, and his wife, Michelle, and Ashley Den Hartigh, all of Minneapolis; two great-grandchildren, Luke and Ella; and two brothers, Clinton Van Roekel, of Sheldon, and Arlin Van Roekel, of Waukee. In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Gershom Van Roekel, Warren Van Roekel, and Merle Van Roekel.
James' favorite bible verse was Philippians 1:21. Trust and Obey was his favorite hymn.
