Services Held For Anthony A. Van Roekel

Anthony A. Van Roekel, 83, of Sibley died Sunday night in the Montevideo hospital after a six month Illness.

Funeral services were held Wednesday at the First Reformed church of Sibley with the Rev. Schmidt officiating. Burial was at Alton Cemetery under the direction of the Walton Funeral Home of Sibley.

Pallbearers were his nephews, Arlen, Harvard, and Jerry Van Roekel and Ronald Mulder of Montevideo, Minn., Dwight Johnson of Willmar, Minn., and Melvin Mored of Worthington, Minn.

Mr. Van Roekel was born March 6, 1886. He married Jeanette Vander Meer on February 27, 1908. They farmed in the Maurice and Orange City areas, but was a retired farmer for twenty years.

His survivors are his widow; two daughters, Mrs. Len (Nancy) Luchtenburg of Dundee, Minn., and Mrs. Joe (Leora) Mulder of Montevideo, Minn., two sons, Henry of Montevideo, Minn., and Art of Rock Valley, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two children.

Mrs. Gerrit Fedders Dies at Age of 29

Mrs. Gerrit Fedders, Jr. died Friday evening in an ambulance enroute to a Sioux City hospital where she was to be operated on for gallstones.

She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Tony Van Roekel who live southwest of Orange City on the old Cambier farm.

Mr. and Mrs. Gerrit Fedders, Jr. made their home near Newkirk.

Funeral services were held in Orange City at the Colenbrander Church, on Tuesday afternoon.

Survivors include her husband, Gerrit Fedders, Jr., her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Tony Van Roekel, four brothers, and sisters, Henry Van Roekel, California, Arthur at home, Leora, at home, and Nancy (Mrs. Leonard Luxemberg) of Ashton. Her brother Henry who is in the army in California, came home on Monday for the funeral and will have a two week furlough.

Obituary of Arthur and son Harlan

Arthur married Henrietta Bonestroo on June 3, 1948 in Hull, Iowa.

Arthur and Henrietta are the parents of three children:

Funeral services were held at the First Reformed Church in Rock Valley June 8, for Arthur Van Roekel, 50, of Rock Valley, who was killed June 5 in an accident at the Van Zee gravel pit at Rock Valley.

Mr. Van Roekel reportedly had been cleaning the hopper at the time of the incident and other workman of the Van Zee Gravel pit were unaware of this and filled it with sand. They rescued the trapped victim as rapidly as possible, but were unable to revive him.

Services were conducted by the Rev. Ralph G. Ten Clay and burial was in Hope Cemetery at Hull.

Mr. Van Roekel was born at Alton August 13, 1922. He married Henrietta Bonestroo June 3, 1948, at Hull. He was a world war II veteran.

Survivors include the widow; a son Kenton; a daughter, Melinda; his mother, Mrs. Anthony Van Roekel; a brother, Henry; and two sisters, Mrs. Leonard Luchtenburg and Mrs. Joe Mulder.


Services were held December 18 in the First Reformed Church in Rock Valley, Iowa for Harlan Van Roekel, 19, who died December 14 in the Rock Valley Hospital following a six months' illness. Rev. Ten Clay officiated and Porter Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. Burial was in Hope Cemetery at Hull.

Harlan was born September 6, 1949 in Sioux Falls and graduated from Rock Valley Community High School.

Survivors are Mr. and Mrs. Art Van Roekel, mother and father, brother, Kenton, sister, Melinda, all at home; grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Anthony Van Roekel of Sibley and Mr. and Mrs. Henry E. Bonestroo of Hull.

Henrietta Albertha Van Roekel
November 8, 1927 - March 16, 2019

Henrietta Van Roekel, 91, of Rock Rapids, formerly of Rock Valley, Iowa, died Saturday, March 16, 2019 at Rock Rapids Health Centre. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, March 20, at 11:00 AM at Porter Funeral Home of Rock Valley with Rev. Dr. Verlyn Boone officiating. Burial will be held at Hope Cemetery in Hull, Iowa. Visitation, with the family present, will be held prior to the funeral service from 10:00-11:00 AM at the funeral home. Public viewing will be held on Tuesday, March 19 at Porter Funeral Home from 12:00-5:00 PM.

Henrietta Albertha Van Roekel, daughter of Henry and Gertrude (Burgers) Bonestroo, was born November 8, 1927, at Perkins, Iowa. Henrietta attended Perkins Grade School, Hull High School, and graduated with a Teacher's Certificate from Westmar College in LeMars, Iowa. On June 3, 1948, Henrietta was united in marriage with Arthur Van Roekel in Hull, Iowa. The couple made their home in Rock Valley, Iowa. Art died June 5, 1973. Henrietta remained in Rock Valley until she moved to Rock Rapids, Iowa later in life.

Henrietta was a dog lover. She always had a dog in her home until having to go to the nursing home. She also enjoyed reading and sewing. Henrietta sewed and sold Barbie clothes for years. Family was always very important to Henrietta during her life and she made sure to attend family events whenever she could. Henrietta was a member of the Rock Valley First Reformed Church.

She is survived by her two children, Melinda (Steve) Koppien and Kenton (Leslie) Van Roekel, both of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; two grandchildren, Kris Kramer-Van Roekel of Cedar Falls, Iowa and Michael (Amy) Koppien of Sioux Falls; four great-grandchildren, Dallas and Zachary Kramer, and Aaron and Demi Koppien; sister, Viola (Loren) Dengler of Rock Rapids; and sister-in-law, Leora (Joe) Mulder of Montevideo, Minnesota.

Henrietta was preceded in death by her parents, Henry and Gertrude Bonestroo; husband, Art; son, Harlan Van Roekel; grandson, Aaron Koppien; and infant sister, Henrietta Albertha Bonestroo.
