Obituaries of John and Tena and their son William

John Van Engen, 54, died Saturday afternoon at his home north of Sioux Center, Ia. following a lingering illness.

Mr. Van Engen was born at Orange City, on September 23, 1884, where he lived and grew to manhood.

On Feb. 29 1898 (sic!) he married to Miss Tena Van Roekel. Fourteen children were born tot hem. Two of whom preceded him in death, a son Gerrit at the age of four and a daughter Alice, at the age of eight years.

He is survived by his widow and the following children: Abraham of Sheldon. John, Gerrit, George, William and Albert all of Sioux Center, Mrs. J. Baker of Sibley, Mrs. Nick Cupedus of Hull, Mrs. Mitchell Vander Veen of Hull, Johanna, Hermina and Tena, all of Sioux Center.

He is also survived by two brothers, Gerrit Van Engen of Boyden, John Timmer of Rock Rapids, and three sisters, Mrs. Albert Lyzen of Alton, Mrs. Henry Ketel of Bigelow, Minn., and Mrs. Henry Den Hartog of Orange City, and also 11 grandchildren.

Mr. Van Engen was engaged in farming, having farmed for 15 years near Alton, eight years near Archer, and the past three years north of Sioux Center.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, February 28, 1939, at 1 o'clock at the home and at 1:30 at the First Christian Reformed church at Sioux, with the Rev. Mr. J. Haan of Hull officiating assisted by Rev. Mr. J. Aberson of Rock Valley. Interment was made in the Orange City cemetery.

MRS. TINA VAN ENGEN

Funeral services for Mrs. Tina Van Engen, 75, of Sibley were held June 9 at the Walton's Funeral home and First Reformed church of Sibley. Burial was in the Orange City cemetery.

Mrs. Van Engen passed away Saturday, June 6, at the Osceola Community hospital after a lingering illness.

She was born at Orange City November 8, 1888, to Mr. and Mrs. Abraham Van Roekel. She grew up in Sioux county where she was married to John Van Engen on February 28, 1908.

They farmed in that community until 1925 when they moved to the Archer-Sanborn area. They moved to Sioux Center in 1936. Her husband passed away here on February 25, 1939.

She moved to Sibley in 1944 where she had since resided.

There were 14 children born to this union, three of whom preceded her in death, Gerrit, Alice and William. Also preceding her were her husband, four grandchildren, her parents, four brothers and a sister,

Surviving children are Mrs. Joe (Gertrude) Baker of Worthington Minn., Mrs. Nick (Nancy) Cuperus of Sheldon, Mrs. Mitchell (Clazina) Vander Veen of Sanborn, Abe of Sheldon, John of Orange City, Mrs. Jake (Johanna) Vos of .Sibley, Gerrit of Sioux Center, George of Sibley, Albert of Sanborn, Mrs. Cornie (Hermina) Van Kley of Sanborn, and Mrs. Norman (Tina) Buysman of Estherville.

She is also survived by 41 grandchildren; 38 great grandchildren; three brothers, George of Sheldon, Tony of Sibley and Henry of Boyden; and two sisters, Mrs. D.J. Fransen of Sibley and Mrs. Harry Rensink of Boyden.

William Van Engen of Sioux Center passed away at the hospital at Anamosa, Ia. very suddenly on Thursday afternoon Jan. 27, 1944 at the age of 20 years and seven months. He had undergone a hernia and tonsil operation and blood clot formed and he passed away very unexpectedly.

He is survived by his mother Mrs. Tena Van Engen and six sisters and five brothers namely Mrs. Joe Bakker of Sibley, Mrs. Nick Cuperus of Sheldon, Mrs. Mitchell Vander Veen of Hull Abe Van Engen of Sheldon, John Van Engen of Sanborn, Mrs. Jake Vos of Sioux Center, Gerrit Van Engen who is in the service at New Guinea, George who is in the service at Camp Maxton, N.C., Albert Van Engen of Sheldon and Mina and Tena Van Engen who make their home at Sioux Center.

He was preceded in death by a brother and a sister who passed away in infancy and by his father who died in Feb. 1939.

Funeral services were held at the First Chr. Ref. church on Tuesday afternoon with the Rev. Arnoys officiating. Burial was made in the Orange City cemetery.

George Van Engen arrived home from North Carolina on Sunday afternoon to attend the funeral services.

Mr. John Van Engen, age 77, of Orange City, passed away Saturday, April 3 at the Orange City Municipal Hospital.

John was born May 15, 1915 at Alton, the son of, John and Tena (VanRoekel) Van Engen.

On October 16,1940 he married Amy Harriet Te Brink at Orange City. They farmed at Sanborn for seven years and then moved to a farm south of Orange City. In June of 1984, they retired into Orange City.

Mr. Van Engen was a member of the First Christian Reformed Church of Orange City.

Survivors include his wife; three daughters, Geneva and her husband, Clifford Korver of Orange City; Beverly and her husband, Harris Raster of George; and Judy of Orange City; seven grandchildren, Bruce Korver; Rhonda and her husband, Coby Mohrhauser; Julie Korver; Pam and her husband, Doug Krull; and Kirsty, Brad, and Eric Raster; and three brothers and six sisters, Gert Baker of Worthington, Minnesota; Nancy Cuperus and Clazina Vander Veen, both of Sheldon; Johanna Vos of Sibley; Gerrit of Sioux Center; George of Sibley; Albert of Sanborn; Mina Van Kley of Sanborn; and Tina Buysman of Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

He was preceded in death by three brothers and a sister, Gerrit, Alice, William, and Abraham.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, April 6 at the First Christian Reformed Church in Orange City, with the Rev. Ralph A. Pontier officiating. Interment followed at West Lawn Cemetery in Orange City under the direction of the Van Etten-Oolman-Van-Gelder Funeral Home in Orange City.

Amy H. Van Engen
May 20, 1916 - October 15, 2011

Mrs. Amy Van Engen, age 95, of Orange City, passed away on Saturday, October 15, 2011, at the Heritage House Nursing Home in Orange City.

There will be a funeral service on Tuesday, October 18, at 10:30am, at the First Christian Reformed Church in Orange City. The Rev. Aldon Kuiper will officiate.

Interment will follow at the West Lawn Cemetery in Orange City. Visitation will be after 4:00pm on Monday, with the family present from 6:00pm to 8:00pm, at the Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City.

Amy Harriet was born on May 20, 1916, at Orange City, the daughter of Bert and Jennie (Vink) Te Brink. She was raised at Orange City, where she attended the Christian School.

On October 16, 1940, she married John Van Engen at Orange City. They made their home on farms near Sanborn and Orange City, where she was a homemaker. In June of 1984, they retired into Orange City. John passed away on April 3, 1993, in Orange City.

In July of 2000, Mrs. Van Engen became a resident of the Heritage House, where she looked forward to their activities, particularly the hymn sings.

She was a member of the First Christian Reformed Church and a former member of the Monica Society of the Christian School.

Amy enjoyed crocheting, sewing, quilting, making plastic canvas keepsakes, and baking, especially cookies for the grandchildren. She was always a very loving, thoughtful, kind, content, and unselfish wife, mother, and grandmother.

Those left to cherish her memory include two daughters and their husbands, Geneva and Clifford Korver, of Orange City; and Beverly and Harris Kaster, of George; seven grandchildren, Bruce (Sarah) Korver, Rhonda (Coby) Mohrhauser, Julie (Brian) Junck, Pam (Doug) Krull, Kristy (Patrick) Connor, Brad (Sharon) Kaster, and Eric Kaster; twelve great-grandchildren; a brother, Alfred (Jean) Te Brink, of Denver, Colorado; and five sisters-in-law, Lois Te Brink and Joyce (Nick) Hulst, both of Orange City; Ruth Van Engen, of Sioux Center; Mina Van Kley, of Sanborn; and Tina (Norman) Buysman of Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Judy Van Engen, on November 8, 2000; three sisters, Nettie (Pete) Mars, Dorothy (Abe) Jacobsma, and Bernice (Henry) Mellema; and two brothers, Dick and John Te Brink.

Gerrit Van Engen, age 77, of Sioux Center died Tuesday, March 11, 1997 at the Sioux Center Community Hospital.

Memorial services were held on Friday, March 14 at 11:00 a.m. at Central Reformed Church in Sioux Center. The Rev. Brian Steenhoek officiated. Burial was in Memory Gardens Cemetery under the direction of the Vander Ploeg Funeral Home, Sioux Center.

Gerrit was born Sept. 11, 1919 in Alton, the son of John E. and Tena (Van Roekel) Van Engen.

He married Ruth Oostra on Feb. 11, 1948 in Sioux Center.

He served in the U.S. Army's Military Police during World War II. He had been employed at De Jong Hatchery in Sioux Center and from 1947 - 77 he was employed at Ver Hoef Chevrolet in Sioux Center.

Mr. Van Engen was a member of Central Reformed Church where he served as an elder and a deacon, the American Legion for 50 years and was a Cub Scout leader.

Survivors include his wife; two sons and their wives, John and Kae of Sioux Center and Dr. Alvin and Sue of Dell Rapids, S.D.; two daughters and their husbands, Linda and Marlyn Zeutenhorst of Sioux Center and Laura and Phil Van Roekel of Sioux City; seven grandchildren, Gary Zeutenhorst, Becky Dykshorn, Katie, Merribeth and Nicholas Van Engen, Ben and Jacob Van Roekel; a brother, Albert of Sanborn; and six sisters, Gert Baker of Worthington, Minn., Clazina Vander Veen and Nancy Cuperus both of Sheldon, Johanna Vos of Sibley, Mina Van Kley of Sanborn and Tina Buysman of Sioux Falls, S.D.

RUTH VAN ENGEN
April 5, 1925 - August 24, 2014

Ruth Van Engen passed away peacefully on Sunday, August 24, 2014 at Royale Meadows Care Center, Sioux Center, Iowa at the age of eighty nine years, four months, and nineteen days.

Ruth was born on April 5, 1925 in Doon, Iowa to John and Kate (Van Surksum) Oostra. Ruth’s early employment included helping area families with housekeeping, childcare and assisting on the family farm. On February 11, 1948, she was united in marriage to Gerrit Van Engen of Sioux Center, Iowa.

In later years she touched the lives of many through her in-home daycare for numerous families, serving over 40 children in the Sioux Center area. Her gentle and caring spirit allowed her to be a mentor to many young children, affectionately being known as "Auntie Ruth" or "Grandma Ruth."

Ruth was a member of Central Reformed Church and served on the afternoon circle. She was a part of the Dinner Date while residing at the New Homestead. Ruth’s spare time was spent doing gardening, embroidery, puzzles, and other crafts, and keeping up with the sport teams of her grandchildren and college basketball.

Ruth and Gerrit’s marriage was blessed with six children, eight grandchildren and thirteen great grandchildren: Linda and Marlyn Zeutenhorst their two children and families, Gary and Kim Zeutenhorst (Ellie, Janae, Kendra, Jarrett), Becky and Tim Dykshorn (Hannah, Charlie, Luke) all of Sioux Center; John (deceased); John and Kae Van Engen of Sioux Center, their two children and families: Katie and Dr. Brian Vander Ley (Gerrit, Gavin, Johanna) of Columbia, MO, Merribeth and Lucas De Groot (Olivia, Nora, Violet) of Oskaloosa, IA; Arlin (deceased); Dr. Alvin and Sue Kelly-Van Engen of Sioux Center, their two sons: Nicholas of Ames, IA, Matthew of Sioux Center; Laura and Phil Van Roekel of Ankeny, IA, their two sons: Ben of Austin, TX, and Jacob of Roanoke, VA.

Ruth is also survived by five siblings: Mary Grooters of Hull, Jake Oostra of Rock Valley, Bill Oostra of Winneconne, WI, Andrew Oostra of Rock Valley, and Robert Oostra of Hull and several nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents, husband, two infant sons and eight siblings.

Ruth was known by her family as a prayer warrior, who was constant in her faith and encouraging in her words. The best memories were around the Sunday dinner table where mom served, roast beef, mashed potatoes and gravy, green beans and Boston Crème Pie. We cherish our memories of her influence in our lives.


Graveside services were held at the local cemetery at ten o'clock Saturday morning for John, son born to Mr. & Mrs. Gerrit Van Engen at the Sacred Heart Hospital at LeMars on Friday evening. Rev. P. A. De Jong officiated at the services.

Beside the parents, the baby is survived by a two year old sister Linda, and the grandparents, Mrs. Tena Van Engen of Sibley, and Mr. & Mrs. John Oostra of Rock Valley. Coming from out of town to attend the services were the grandparents and Mr. & Mrs. Norman Byusman and Mr. & Mrs. George Van Engen of Sibley, Mr. & Mrs. Ray Grooters of Sanborn; Mr. & Mrs. Marinus Oostra of Rock Valley and Mr. & Mrs. Ralph Oostra of Hull.

George Van Engen, 72, of Sibley died Monday, April 19, at his home.

Funeral services were Thursday, April 22, at 10:30 a.m. at First Reformed Church of Slbley with the Rev. Gary Van Heukelom officiating. Burial was in the Holman Township Cemetery of Sibley.

Van Engen was born March 27, 1921, at Alton, the son of John and Tina (Van Roekel) Van Engen. He grew up and attended school in the Archer area and had two years of high school at Western Christian in Hull.

He served in the American, European, African and Middle Eastern Theaters during World War II and earned two Bronze Battle Stars.

After his honorable discharge In 1947, he returned to Northwest Iowa.

He married Helen Buysman at the home of her parents near Sibley. Following their marriage they lived in Lennox, South Dakota, and later moved to Sibley.

He was very active in the American Legion and also helping other veterans. He was Service Officer of the Disabled American Veterans with 9,094 hours of volunteer service including 20 years of service to the Vets Hospital in Sioux Falls.

He also served as Ninth District Commander of the American Legion and was instrumental in Sibley in completing the Avenue of Flags on Memorial Day. He was a member of First Reformed Church in Sibley.

Survivors include his wife; four children, Theola Van Weltering and her husband Bill of Clear Lake, Jim Van Engen and his wife Pauline of Sibley, Gloria Eddy and her husband Steve of Hlnton, and Tim Van Engen and his wife Noel of Webster City; six sisters, Gertrude Baker of Worthlngton, Minnesota, Nancy Cuperus of Sheldon, Clazina Vander Veen of Sheldon, Johanna Vos of Sibley. Hermina Van Kley of Sanborn and Tina Buysman of Sioux Falls; two brothers, Gerrit of Sioux Center and Albert of Sanborn; and 11 grandchildren.

Helen Van Engen, 82, of Sibley died Wednesday evening (May 25, 2005) at her residence in Sibley.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. today at First Reformed Church in Sibley with the Rev. Gary Van Heukelom officiating. Burial will follow in Holman Township Cemetery at Sibley.

Helen Harriet (Buysman) Van Engen was born May 1, 1923, at Sanborn, Iowa, the daughter of James and Flora (Elgersma) Buysman. Helen grew up in the Sanborn and Melvin areas, where she received her education.

On Nov. 27, 1947, she was united in marriage to George Van Engen in Sibley, Iowa. The couple made their home in Lennox, S.D., and later they moved to Sibley, where they raised their family.

Helen worked for Osceola Community Hospital as a housekeeper for 35 years.

In 1993, Helen's husband, George, died, ending their marriage of 47 years. She continued to live in their home, where she kept very active.

Helen enjoyed life and people, especially her grandchildren.

She enjoyed spending time at the summer cabin on Spirit Lake, sitting around a camp fire, going to rummage sales, quilting, "bling-bling" jewelry, shopping, fishing, going on bus trips, walking her dogs, Babe and Peppy, and loved her bird, Petey.

Helen was a member of First Reformed Church in Sibley. She had a deep determination and when she was diagnosed with cancer that determination stayed with her until the end.

Helen died this past Wednesday evening, May 25, 2005, at her home in Sibley with her family by her side.

She is survived by her children; Theola and her husband, Bill Van Wettering, of Forest City, Jim and his wife, Pauline Van Engen, of Sibley, Gloria and her husband, Steve Eddy, of Hinton, and Tim and his wife, Noel Van Engen, of Lake Park, Iowa; 14 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; along with one brother, Norman (Tina) Buysman of Sioux Falls, S.D.; and two sisters: Joyce (Gerrit) Meyer of Worthington, Minn., and Evelyn (Lloyd) Runia of Sibley.

Helen was preceded in death by her parents, James and Flora; husband, George; two grandchildren: Lesley Ann Eddy and Tyler Steven Eddy; and brother, Harold Buysman.

Sanborn - Albert Van Engen, 79, Sanborn, died Thursday, Dec. 9 at his home.

Services were Monday, Dec. 13, at the First Reformed Church in Sanborn, with the Rev. Dr. Gary Hegstad officiating. Burial was at Roseland Cemetery in Sanborn, under the direction of Sanborn Funeral Home.

Albert Van Engen, son of John & Tina (Van Roekel) Van Engen, was born Jan. 21, 1925 in Archer.

He lived his youth in the Archer and Sioux Center areas, graduating from the eighth grade in Sioux Center.

He married Agnes Groendyke on March 15, 1951, at the Presbyterian Church in Sibley.

They lived in Sibley. He worked construction March 1951 - February 1952. They then moved to Sanborn. He was employed with Associated Milk Producers Inc. (AMPI) for 35 years as a can and bulk hauler, retiring on March 1, 1984.

He was a member of First Reformed Church in Sanborn.

Special interests included golfing and playing cards. He enjoyed spending time with his family and especially cherished the times with his grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife, Agnes Van Engen of Sanborn; two daughters, Connie and Laverne Bosma of Sibley, and Barb and Curt Reverts of Hartley; a daughter-in-law, Terri Van Engen of Dawson, MN; five grandchildren; three great grandchildren; four sisters, Gert Baker of Worthington, MN; Johanna Vos of Sibley; Mina Van Kley of Sanborn, and Tina Buysman of Sioux Falls, SD; and three sisters-in-law, Amy Van Engen of Orange City; Helen Van Engen of Sibley; and Ruth Van Engen of Sioux Center.

He was preceded in death by a son, David Van Engen, on Sept. 29, 2004, six brothers and three sisters.

Agnes (Groendyke) Van Engen, the daughter of Cornelius and Elizabeth (Dykstra) Groendyke, was born February 27, 1922, in Ocheyedan, IA. She lived her youth in the rural Ocheyedan and Bigelow, MN, areas, attending Wilson Township #1 School at Bigelow, MN, and graduated on June 10, 1936.

She was united in marriage to Albert Van Engen on March 15, 1951 at the Presbyterian Church in Sibley, IA.

To this union three children were born: Connie, Barb and David. Following their marriage the couple lived in the Sibley and Sheldon areas before moving to Sanborn where Albert was employed at the Sanborn Creamery.

Agnes was a devoted wife and mother throughout her lifetime. She died unexpectedly at the Sanford Sheldon Medical Center on December 12, 2009 at the age of 87.

Agnes was a member of the First Reformed Church of Sanborn. She enjoyed playing Rumicube, 80-cent Poker, dominoes, golfing, cross- word puzzles and spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. One thing she thoroughly enjoyed was her annual Christmas shopping trip to Sioux Falls with her daughters Connie and Barb.

Left to cherish her memory are her two daughters: Connie Bosma and her husband, Laverne, of Sibley, IA and Barb Reverts and her husband, Curt, of Hartley, IA; a former daughter-in-law: Terri Tucholke of Renville, MN; five grandchildren: Cory Bosma and his wife, Connie, of Sibley, IA, and their children: Cari, Kinsey and Koby, Jason Van Engen and his wife, Casie, of Starbuck, MN, and their son Daven, Amber Postma and her husband, Jason, of Hartley, IA, and their daughter due in February, Jami Sather and her husband, Ken, of Springfield, MN, and their children, Kaitlin and Kameron, and Aaron Reverts of Hartley, IA; one brother, John Groendyke and his wife, Beatrice, of Worthington, MN; two sisters, Margaret Zylstra of Worthington, MN and Lucille Groendyke of Sibley, IA; a sister-in-law, Kate Groendyke of Sanborn, IA; several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Albert on December 9, 2004, a son David on September 29, 2004; two sisters: Minnie Weg and Nellie Vander Wilt; three brothers: Sebastian, Neal, and Edward Groendyke.

Cornie Van Kley

Cornie Van Kley, the son of Case and Lillian (Van Iperen) Van Kley, was born on July 19, 1923 in Hospers, IA. He spent his childhood years in Sibley, IA, attending the area country schools.

On March 3, 1948, he was united in marriage to Hermina Van Engen at the Christian Reformed Church in Sibley, and to this union, three sons were born: Craig, Dennis, and Doug.

The couple later moved to Sanborn, IA, where Cornie worked for 38 years at the O'Brien County Cooperative Creamery (now known as AMPI); first as a milk hauler, and later as a field representative to farmers.

The Van Kleys were custodians of the First Reformed Church in Sanborn for 23 years.

Due to failing health, in 2000, Cornie became a resident of the Oak Park Care Center in Sheldon, IA, where he was loved and cared for until he passed away on July 17, 2006 at the Northwest Iowa Health Center in Sheldon.

Cornie valued education, and was very proud of the fact that his three sons and two of his grandsons are currently teachers.

He was a member of the First Reformed Church in Sanborn.

He enjoyed outdoor sports, including fishing, hunting, camping, horseshoes, and golfing. He loved watching and playing baseball, and was a big New York Yankee fan.

Spending time with his own family was important to Cornie, and he seldom passed up an opportunity to tease his Oak Park Care Center family.

Survivors include his wife, Mina; three sons: Craig and Sharon of Blue Earth, MN, and their three children: Kay and her husband Bernie Beigh, Chad and Kurt; Dennis and Sandy of Sioux Center, IA, and their three sons: Taylor, Brett and Brady; and Doug and Michelle of Edgerton, MN and their three children: Heather, Hailey and Blake; two sisters: Stella Schiernbeck of Sibley, IA, and Hilda and her husband John Roelfs of Ashton, IA; two sisters-in-law: Alma Van Kley of Sheldon, IA, and Jeanne Van Kley of Worthington, MN; many other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters and three brothers.
