Obituary of Netta

Mrs. Jake Van Roekel, 57, life-time resident of Alvord vicinity, who died at the Sioux Center hospital Thursday night, December 6, 1956. Netta Beukhof, was born in The Netherlands, Dec. 16, 1898, where she attended school and grew to young womanhood. She was married to Jake Van Roekel September 28, 1918, and in 1920 the couple immigrated to America.

Survivors besides her husband include six sons, Joe of Sioux Center, Tony of Rock Rapids; John of Steen, Minnesota; Jake of Corsica, South Dakota; Cornie of Conrad, Montanan and William of Alvord; one daughter, Minnie (Mrs, William Klaarenbeek) of Armour, South Dakota; 13 grandchildren; one sister, Minnie, (Arie) Kelderman of Rock Valley; two brothers and seven sisters in The Netherlands.

One daughter, one grandchild and one sister preceded her in death.

VAN ROEKEL, JOE AND MARGARET (BROEK)

Joe Van Roekel was born in Ede, The Netherlands, to Jake and Netta (Buikof) Van Roekel. He came to the United States at the age of seven months, coming by boat. His parents and an aunt and uncle settled near Inwood, then moved to South Dakota, and then to the Rock Valley area. He was of a family of one sister and five brothers. Today there are three brothers and one sister remaining.

In May of 1946 Joe married Margaret Broek, daughter of Bert and Dena (Kempers) Broek. Margaret was born three miles north and onehalf mile west of Sioux Center, and later moved three miles north and two and a half miles east of Sioux Center. She has one sister and four brothers.

After their marriage they lived in Rock Valley for one year where Joe worked for Warntjes Chevrolet. In the spring of 1947 they moved to the farm located three miles north and one mile west of Sioux Center. Here the three children were born.

Bernard married Marcia Arentsen and they have two children. Bernie is the principal of the Waukee, Iowa High School, and Marcia is a teacher of the 3rd grade in Waukee. They are members of Meredith Drive Reformed Church in Des Moines.

Norman is married to Lauri Anderson and lives in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. They also have two children. Norm is a Production Manager Specialist at Harvard Industries, and Lauri does secretarial work in Sioux Falls. They are members of the First Christian Reformed Church in Sioux Falls.

Marlis is married to Rick Hulstein and lives in Winters, California. They also have two children. Marlis works for Serta Mattress and is in Accounts Receivable, and Rick is a meat cutter for Food 4 Less in Vacaville, California. They are members of Dixon Community Church.

Joe and Margaret moved to 1215 1st Avenue in Sioux Center in April of 1969 where they live today. Joe worked for the City of Sioux Center until he retired in 1985, as a city maintenance worker. Margaret worked at Dordt College for nineteen years until 1985.

Joe Van Roekel, 92, of Sioux Center, IA died Wednesday, April 25, 2012 at Royale Meadows Care Center in Sioux Center.

A visitation will be held on Sunday from 3-8PM, with the family present from 3-5PM at the Memorial Funeral Home of Sioux Center.

A funeral service will be held on Monday at 10:30AM at the Bethel Christian Reformed Church of Sioux Center with Rev. John Lee and Rev. Duane Tinklenberg officiating. Interment will follow in Memory Gardens Cemetery of Sioux Center.

The Van Roekel family prefers memorials be directed to the Sioux Center Christian School.

Joe Van Roekel was born October 1, 1919 in Ede, The Netherlands to Jake and Netta (Beukhof) Van Roekel. He came to the United States at the age of seven months.

He was married to Margaret Broek on May 24, 1946 at Sioux Center. He worked for the City of Sioux Center until his retirement in 1985. He enjoyed spending time with his family and was a member of Bethel Christian Reformed Church.

His memory is cherished by his two sons and daughters-in law, Bernie and Marcia Van Roekel of Spirit Lake, IA, Norm and Laurie Van Roekel of Sun City West, AZ, and daughter Marlis Hulstein of Omaha, NE; six grandchildren: Allison (Chad) Vander Haar, Jamie (Allison) Van Roekel, Troy (Lindsey) Van Roekel, Dana (Josh) Bolluyt, Lacey Hulstein and Michael Hulstein; eight great-grandchildren: Connor, Madison and Levi Vander Haar, Tyler and Kellen Van Roekel, Lucas and Leah Bolluyt, and Tristan Hulstein; sisters- in-law, Winnie Van Roekel, Bertha Van Roekel, Hermina Van Roekel, Priscilla Broek and brothers- in-law John Broek, Delbert (Annafeen) Broek and many nieces and nephews.

Margaret Van Roekel, 87, of Sioux Center, IA died Monday, May 16, 2005 at the Avera McKennan Select Specialties Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD. A memorial service will be held Thursday, 5/19, at 11 am at the Bethel Christian Reformed Church of Sioux Center with Rev. Stephen Rhoda officiating. Interment will preceded the memorial service in Memory Gardens Cemetery of Sioux Center. A family prayer service will be held at on Thursday at 10am at the Memorial Funeral Home of Sioux Center. Visitation will be held Wednesday, 5/18, from 2pm to 8pm, with the family present from 6:30pm to 8pm at the Memorial Funeral Home of Sioux Center. Margaret was born January 24, 1918 in rural Sioux Center to parents Bert and Dena (Kempers) Broek. She was united in marriage to Joe Van Roekel on May 24, 1946. Margaret was a life long member of Bethel Christian Reformed Church and taught Sunday school for many years. Margaret was also active in various ladies circles at the church.

She is survived by her husband, Joe; two sons and daughters-in-law, Bernie & Marcia of Urbandale, IA, Norm & Laurie of Sioux Center, IA; a daughter and son-in-law, Marlis & Rick Hulstein of Vacaville, CA; six grandchildren, Allison (Chad) Vander Haar, Jamie (Allison) Van Roekel, Troy (Lindsey) Van Roekel, Dana (Joshua) Bolluyt, Lacey Hulstein, and Michael Hulstein; and two great grandchildren, Connor and Madison Vander Haar. Also surviving are Margarets sister and brother-in-law, Lillian & Warren Van Roekel; two brothers & sisters-in-law, John B. & Delma, and Delbert & Annafeen, and two sisters-in-law, Pricilla Broek and Thelma Broek all of Sioux Center.

Margaret was preceded in death by her parents; an infant daughter, Annetta Joyce; and two brothers, Barney and Dave.

Obituary

William Klarenbeek, 72, of Sioux Center died Saturday, April 11, at his home. Services were at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 14, at Netherlands Reformed Church of Sioux Center. The Rev. John Den Hoed officiated. Burial was in Memory Gardens Cemetery.

Klarenbeek was born October 24, 1914, in The Netherlands and came to the United States at age five. He lived his youth in the Sioux Center and Doon area and attended rural schools.

He married Minnie Van Roekel December 16, 1941, at Alvord. The couple farmed near Corsica, South Dakota, for 11 years and he then was a painter at Orange City until retiring to Sioux Center in 1983. Klarenbeek was a member of Netherlands Reformed Church of Sioux Center.

Minnie Klarenbeek, 86, of Sioux Center died unexpectedly Monday, Feb. 5, 2007, at her residence. Services will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Netherlands Reformed Church in Sioux Center, with the Rev. G.M. de Leeuw officiating. Burial will be in Memory Gardens Cemetery. There will be a family prayer service at 1:15 p.m. Thursday at Memorial Funeral Home in Sioux Center. Visitation will be 2 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., at the funeral home.

Minnie Klarenbeek was born Aug. 14, 1920, to Jake and Netta (Beukhof) Van Roekel, in Inwood, Iowa. She was raised in the Inwood and Rock Valley, Iowa area. She attended country school through the eighth grade.

She was united in marriage to William Klarenbeek on Dec. 16, 1941, in Alvord, Iowa. They farmed near Corsica, S.D., for 11 years. The couple later moved to Orange City, Iowa, where he was a painter. In 1983, they retired and moved to Sioux Center. William preceded her in death on April 11, 1987.

She was a member of Netherlands Reformed Congregation. She enjoyed spending time with her family and working as a foster grandparent.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 45 years, William; her parents; four brothers, John, Jake, Tony and Willie Van Roekel; and three sisters-in-law, Josie, Elbertha and Margaret Van Roekel.

The Klarenbeek family prefers memorials to CHEARS Home Health and Hospice or the Netherlands Reformed Christian School.

Winifred Van Roekel, 94, of Sioux Center, IA died Saturday, December 15, 2012, at Royale Meadows Care Center in Sioux Center. Winnie Van Roekel was born April 4, 1918 to Cornelius and Maartje (Vande Hoef) Vande Zandschulp at Perkins, Iowa. On February 27, 1950, Winnie married Anthony Van Roekel in Sioux Center, Iowa. The couple farmed for many years near Rock Rapids, Iowa. After moving into Rock Rapids, Winnie cleaned at the Doris Doty Store and various houses. When the couple moved to Hull, she cleaned the library and city offices. In her spare time, Winnie enjoyed keeping busy with crocheting or embroidery work that she gave to her family or the ladies aid at church. She was a member of the Netherlands Reformed Congregation of Sioux Center.

Survivors include one daughter, Jolene and Harlan De Stigter of Sioux Center; three sons: Ken and Glenda Van Roekel of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Nelson Van Roekel of Rock Valley, Iowa, Martin and Pat Van Roekel of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; 8 grandchildren: Jeff and Lynn De Stigter of Hull, Jody and Walter Henry of Davenport, Iowa, Sheila De Stigter of Sioux Center, Tanya and Fernando Alverez of Sioux Center, Chad De Stigter of Houston, Texas, Sarah and David Vodnick of Prior Lake, Minnesota, Heidi and Eric Larson of St. Paul, Minnesota, Erik Van Roekel of Grand Forks, North Dakota; 6 great grandchildren; two sister-in-laws: Hermina Van Roekel and Bertha Van Roekel both of Sioux Center.

Hermina Van Roekel age 90 of Sioux Center, Iowa died Tuesday, November 2, 2021, at Sioux Center Health Center in Sioux Center, IA.

A funeral service will take place at 2:00 PM, Friday, November 5, 2021, at Netherlands Reformed Church in Rock Valley with Rev. J.J. Witvoet officiating. Burial will follow in the Memory Gardens Cemetery in Sioux Center.

Public visitation will be Thursday, November 4th with family present from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Memorial Funeral Home of Sioux Center.

The Van Roekel Family prefers memorials be directed to Netherlands Reformed Christian School.

Hermina Van Roekel was born on December 10, 1930, in Corsica, SD, the daughter of Herman and Jennie (Kaptien) Zomer. She grew up in Corsica and attended Country School there.

On February 20, 1953, she was united in marriage to Cornelius 'Cornie' Van Roekel of Alvord, IA in Corsica, SD.

Hermina worked several places throughout her life such as, a cook for Central Café in Sioux Center, Janitor at the Netherlands Reformed Church of Sioux Center, and as a CNA at the Sioux Center Hospital. She was a member of the Netherlands Reformed Church in Rock Valley.

Hermina loved her family and especially enjoyed her children and grandchildren’s visits.

Hermina is survived by her seven children, Jerrold (Elaine) Van Roekel of Rock Valley, IA, Harlan (Gert) Van Roekel of Grand Rapids, MI, Patti Van Roekel of Ireton, IA, John (Sheryl) Van Roekel of Coopersville, MI, Jan (Randy) De Kruyf of Sioux Center, IA, Dennis (Glenda) Van Roekel of Sioux Center, IA and Cindy (Brent) Van Beek of Orange City, IA; 26 grandchildren, 84 great grandchildren and 9 great-great grandchildren; four sisters, Hattie Van Dyke of Grand Rapids, MI, Nina Koedam of Rock Valley, IA, Lene Walma of Corsica, SD and Fran Overweg of Grand Rapids, MI; two brothers, John Zomer of Sioux Center, IA and Alvin Zomer of Rock Valley, IA; sister-in-law, Sylvia Zomer of Corsica, SD; and several nieces, nephews and other extended family.

VanRoekel, Ronald Allen

Ronald Allen VanRoekel 1/27/1961 - 11/9/2023 Ron, aged 62, passed away on Thursday, November 9 2023, in the Philippines. He was born in Rock Rapids IA to William and Elbertha VanRoekel. Spent his growing up years in Hudsonville MI where he graduated high school in 1980. He went on to college at DeVry Univ in Columbus OH and graduated in 1983.

He then joined the US Navy spending time in Florida, the Persian Gulf and Japan. After active duty he spent many years with the Navy Reserve Honor Guard at Fort Custer in Battle Creek MI. In August 2014 he moved to Manila, Philippines and married Miles Tarinque on October 8, 2014. She passed away from cancer in Autumn of 2017.

Ron was preceded in death by his wife Miles, parents William and Elbertha Van Roekel, brother William J VanRoekel, and brother-in-law Gregory Barrett. He is survived by his siblings Darlene Barrett, Laurie (Reinhard) Petermeier, Jerry (Heather) VanRoekel and Kathy (William) King, plus many nieces and nephews as well as numerous great nieces and nephews.
