Funeral services for Alma Irene De Penning, 82, of Pella were held October 24 at the Garden Chapel Funeral Home in Pella, the Rev. Ken Dykstra officiated. Music was provided by Barb Nunnikhoven, organist and special music by Denise Van Wyk and Patti Van Zante, vocalists.

Interment was at the Oakwood Cemetery in Pella. Casket bearers were Eric Arkema, Duane Arkema, Robert De Penning, Del De Penning, Marv Tysseling, and Scott Palmer.

Alma Irene De Penning, the daughter of Andrew W. and Henrietta (Van Roekel) De Penning, was born February 22, 1920 in rural Monroe.

She died at the C.L.C. Nursing Home in Des Moines, Iowa on October 20, 2002, at the age of 82 years, seven months and 28 days.

Alma worked as a home health care aide for many years. Alma was a member of the First Reformed Church in Pella and was active in the Anna Circle and the Pella Ladies Aide. Alma was also a member of the Christian Women's Temperance Union. Alma loved needlework, crocheting, quilting, and cross-stitch.

Alma is survived by six nieces and one nephew: Julia M. Thoel and her husband, Delmar of Manson; Robert G. De Penning of Lynnville; Lila J. De Penning of Mt. Pleasant; Ruth E. McCorkle and her husband, Tom of Bedford, Texas; Erma Cater and her husband, Earl of Methow, Washington; Nancy J. Fulton and her husband, Randy of Wilbur, Nebraska; and Mary B. Arkema and her husband, Duane of Lynnville. She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Harriet De Penning of Pella; and many great and great-great-nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents: Andrew W. and Henrietta (Van Roekel) De Penning; two brothers: Harold C. De Penning and Marion L. De Penning and his wife, Mary; and a nephew, Virgil De Penning.

Arrangements were handled by Garden Chapel Funeral Home in Pella.

Memorials may be made to the Christian Opportunity Center or First Reformed Church of Pella.
