Funeral services for Dorothy Louise Hubbard Van Roekel, 83, of Knoxville, who died Thursday, March 4, 2004, at Iowa Lutheran Hospital in Des Moines, were held Monday, March 8, at the First United Methodist Church in Knoxville. Rev. Peter J. Peterson officiated at the services. Music was provided by Katie Davis, soloist and Geoffrey Shultz, organist.

Interment was at Graceland Cemetery in Knoxville. Casketbearers were Scott Gadberry, Larry Gadberry, Richard McMullin, Siamac Vahabzadeh, Clayton Vining, and Greg Weldon.

Dorothy was born on Aug. 2, 1920, on a farm near Hillview, Ill., the daughter of Earl and Mabel (Rollins) Hubbard. She lived and attended school in the area, graduating from Hillview High School in 1937 and Whitehall High School in 1938. She graduated from Our Savior's School of Nursing and became a registered nurse in 1941. She graduated from St. Louis University with a B.S of Philosophy degree in 1952.

Dorothy enlisted and served in World War II, from 1942 to 1945, in the Navy Nurse Corps reserve. She was stationed in San Diego, Calif., Brisbane, Australia, Hollandia, New Guinea, and Brooklyn, N.Y.

She married Gordon Craig in 1945. To this union was born a daughter, Marsha Leigh Craig. She married Henry Van Roekel in 1957. To this union was born a son, Timothy Hubbard Van Roekel. She married Edwin Emerson in 1992.

She is survived by her husband, Edwin Emerson of Knoxville; a daughter, Marsha Gadberry (Larry) of Olathe, Kan.; a son, Timothy Van Roekel (Kathleen) of Cincinnati, Ohio; three sisters, Marry Hallock, Martha Hubbard and Betty Vining; a brother, Keith Hubbard; her step-children, Rae Gregory, Kay McGarry, Dwain Van Roekel and Tony Van Roekel; three grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and many other relatives and friends.

Memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church.

Arrangements were made by Evans-McCleery Funeral Home.
