Obituaries of Hattie and Ralph

Funeral services for Mrs Hattie Kastine, 77, were held at a funeral home in Rock Rapids Saturday, with Rev. Mervin Nelson conducting the services. Interment was at Doon, with grandsons of the deceased serving as pallbearers.

Survivors include the widower; four daughters, Reka, Caroline, Pearl, and Margaret; two sons, Elmer and Ben; 25 grandchildren and 25 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Gerrit.

Mrs Kastine was born in Sioux county May 7, 1887, the daughter of Gerrit and Caroline Hulstein.

She married Ralph Kastine Feb. 8, 1904 at Sioux Center and had lived in Rock Rapids for 35 years.

Funeral services were held Saturday morning for Ralph Kastine, 86, at Restmore home where he died Thursday February 1st.

Mr. Kastine spent most of his life in Doon.

Survivors include three daughters, Mrs. Pearl Morton, Stockton, Calif., Mrs. Reka Johnson, Leechfield, Minn., Mrs. Lane Gerritson, Rock Valley. Two sons Elmer of Tea, S.D., Ben of Michigan and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Burial was in the Doon Cemetery.

Obituaries of Caroline and James

Mrs. James Kopsas, 65, died July 30, home at Doon following a short Illness, Funeral services were held Wednesday August 2, I 30 in the Congregational Church, at Doon, with Rev. William Ballard officiating. Mrs. Highstreet, organist, accompanied the male quartet. Pallbearers were Lawrence, Gary, and Robert Anderson, James, Steven and Daniel Kopsas.

The former Caroline Kastine was born January 20,1907 in Carmel and married August 29, 1923 in Sioux City. James died May 12, 1972.

Burial was held in the Hillside Cemetery under the direction of the Porter Funeral Home. Survivors: sons, George of Covina, Calif., Ralph of Grants Pass, Ore., John of Waynesville, Mo., Basil of Sioux City, Louie and Alex, both of Doon, Gus of Spirit Lak; daughters, Mrs. Jerome (Dena) Anderson. Mrs. Cuttis (Mary Ann) Berg of Montevido, Minn., Mrs. Gordon (Elaine) Powell and Mrs. David (Hattie) Baird, both of Canton, S. D.; sisters, Mrs. Martin Johnson of Litchfield, Minn., Mrs. Paul Morton of Stockton, Calif., and Mrs. Lane Gerritson of Rock Valley; brothers Elmer of Tea, S.D. and Ben of Grand Rapids, Mich; 25 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren.

James Kopsas, 85, of Doon, died Thursday, May 12 in Valley Manor Nursing Home following a long illness.

Funeral services were held Monday, May 15, 2:00 p.m. in the Congregational Church at Doon with the Rev. William Ballard officiating. Mrs. Bert Highstreet accompanied the quartet of Galen Lawrence, Ivan Krull, Norman Hass and William Niemeyer as they sang "Rock of Ages" and "One by One". Pallbearers were Lawrence Anderson, Gary Anderson, Robert Anderson, James A. Kopsas, Steven Kopsas and Daniel Kopsas. Burial was in Hillside Cemetery under the direction of Potter Funeral Home.

Mr. Kopsas was born on Nov. 8, 1886 in Athens, Greece. He came to the United States, settled in the Doon area in 1912. His marriage to Caroline Kastine on Aug. 29, 1923 took place in Sioux City.

He was a retired railroad man and was a resident of Valley Manor for the past three weeks.

Survivors are his widow; seven sons, George of Pasadena, Calif., Ralph of Gram Pass, Ore., John of Waynesville, Mo., Basil of Sioux City. Louie and Alex of Doon. and Gus of Spirit Lake; four daughters, Mrs. Jerome Anderson of Sioux falls, S.D., Mrs. Curtis Berg of Montevideo, Minn., Mrs. Gordon Powell and Mrs. David Baird of Canton, S.D.; 25 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren and three sisters in Greece.

Obituary of Pearl

Pearl Morton, 88, passed away Friday, January 23, 2003.

She was born on July 8, 1915 in Doon, Iowa, moved to Los Angeles with her late husband, Lieutenant Paul Morton.

She worked as a seamstress in the L.A. garment district. She then moved to Stockton with her husband and lived here for 60 years. She worked part-time as a seamstress for Catalina and Serventi's Draperies, and served part-time as a transport matron for the San Joaquin County Sheriff's Office under Sheriff Michael Canlis.

Pearl enjoyed fishing with her family and after retirement enjoyed many fishing and hunting trips with her husband. She was an avid gardener and dearly liked "a good nickel slot".

She is survived by her son, John Morton; daughter, Edith (Morton) LaStella; grandchildren, Danalee Maimone, Dellann Morton and Richard Beall, and five great grand- children.

Services: Wednesday, January 28, 2004 at 10:00 a.m. in the Evergreen Chapel at Cherokee Memorial Park, Lodi. Visitation: Tuesday, January 27, 2004 from 1:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. in the Cherokee Memorial Funeral Home, 831 Industrial Way at Beckman Road, Lodi, CA.

Obituaries of Lane and Margaret

Lane Gerritson, 67, Rock Valley, died Thursday at his home of an apparent heart attack.

Services were held December 31 at the Pioneer United Methodist Church with The Rev. David Waterman officiating. Burial was in Valley View Cemetery under the direction of the Porter funeral Home.

Lane Gerritson was born October 15, 1912, at Rock Valley. He married Margaret Kastine February 10, 1933, at Rock Valley. He was self-employed and worked as custodian for the Methodist Church in later years.

Survivors include the widow; three sons, Arthur of Rock Valley, Ben and Leonard, both of Sioux City; two daughters, Mrs. Henry (Betty) Kraayenbrink of Sioux Center and Mrs. Douglas (Helen) Reinke of Sioux City; three brothers, Richard of Rock Valley, Audie in California, and Gerbie of Beloit; two sisters, Mrs. John Shaff of Sioux Falls and Mrs. Peter Kruizenga of Washington State and 14 grandchildren.

Margaret Gerritson, age 82, of Rock Valley, died suddenly Saturday September 2, 2000 at the Avera McKennan Hospital at Sioux Falls, SD.

Funeral Services were held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, September 5 at the Pioneer United Methodist Church at Rock Valley, with Rev. Jerry Robertson presiding. Burial was at the Valley View Cemetery at Rock Valley.

Margaret was born June 11, 1918 at Doon, Iowa, daughter of Ralph and Hattie (Hulstein) Kastine. She married Lane Gerritson on February 10, 1933 at Rock Valley. Together they lived at Rock Valley where Margaret worked at the Rock Valley Public School as acustodian for many years.

Margaret was a member of the Pioneer United Methodist Church and the Rock Valley Senior Citizen's Center.

Lane died December 27, 1979.

Surviving relatives include three sons and their wives, Arthur and Billie Gerritson of Rock Valley, IA., Ben and Sandy Gerritson, Leonard and Becky Gerritson all of Sioux City, Iowa; two daughters Betty Kraayenbrink of Venice, Florida, Helen and her husband Douglas Reinke of Sioux City, Iowa; fourteen grandchildren; twenty-one greatgrandchildren, brother, Benny Kastine of Wisconsin; two sisters Pearl Morton of Stockton, CA, Reka Johnson of Litchfield, Minnesota.

Margaret was preceded in death by her husband, Lane; two brothers, Gerrit and Elmer Kastine; sister Caroline Kopsas.
