Rites are held here Wednesday for Mrs. Conrad Hulstein
Funeral services were held at Bethel Christian Reformed church here at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 31, for Mrs Conrad Hulstein. 77, longtime resident of the community, who died at the Sioux Center Community hospital Monday, March 29.
Services were conducted by the Rev. Henry Vanden Heuvel and burial was made in Carmel cemetery under the direction of the Co-operative Funeral Home of Sioux Center.
Mrs. Hulstein, the former Grace Van Maanen, was born at Alton July 19 1893. She attended school and lived her youth in rural Sioux Center.
She was married to Conrad Hulstein April 10, 1914, in Sioux Center. The couple farmed in the Carmel, Rock Rapids and Sioux Center areas prior to retiring and moving into Sioux Center in 1953.
Survivors include her husband; two sons, Gerrit F. of Rock Rapids and Albertus of Edgerton. Minn.; eight daughters, Carolyn (Mrs. Marvin DeKam) of Rock Valley. Etta (Mrs. Bert Baker) of Canton, S.D.. Emma (Mrs. John Vogel) of Currie, Minn., Gertrude (Mrs. Henry Vonk) of Huron Lake, Minn., Mrs. Viola Delfs of Rock Rapids, Minerva (Mrs. Gerrit John Vander Streek) of Rock Rapids, Winerva of Sioux Center and Myrna (Mrs. Leonard Nyhof) of Sioux Center; 10 grandchildren, 10 great grand children; four sisters. Mrs. Gerben De Jong, Mrs. John Rens, Mrs. Winnie Vis all of Hull, and Mrs. Ben Bleyenberg of Sioux Center.

Funeral services held Tuesday for Conrad Hulstein
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. April 4 at Bethel Christian Reformed church here for Conrad Hulstein, 77, retired farmer of Sioux Center, who died at his home Saturday, April 1.
Services were conducted by the Rev. Henry Vanden Heuvel and burial was made in Carmel cemetery under the direction of the Co-operative Funeral Home.
Mr. Hulstein was born in Sioux Center July 26, 1894, and spent most of his adult life farming in the Sioux Center and Rock Rapids areas.
He married Grace Van Maanen April 10, 1914, in Sioux Center. The couple moved into Sioux Center in 1953 after retiring from farming. She preceded him in death March 29, 1971.
Survivors include two sons, Gerrit F. of Rock Rapids and Albertus of Edgerton, Minn.; eight daughters, Mrs. Marvin (Carolyn) DeKam of Rock Valley, Mrs. Bert (Etta) Baker of Canton. S. D., Mrs. John (Emma) Vogel of Currie, Minn., Mrs. Henry (Gertrude) Vonk of Huron Lake, Minn., Mrs. Viola Delphs and Mrs. Gerrit John (Minerva) Vander Streek, both of Rock Rapids, and Miss Winerva Hulstein and Mrs. Leonard (Myrna) Nyhof, both of Sioux Center; four brothers, Raymond of Edgerton and Cornelius, Will and Steven, all of Sioux Center; a sister, Mrs. Johanna Lihudis, of Sioux Center, 40 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren.

Mina Albertha Hulstein
The first victim of the heat in this part of the state was Miss Mina Albertha Hulstein, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Conrad G. Hulstein. She died early Tuesday morning of scarlet fever and the heat of Sunday proved to be too great for her. For a few hours she ran a fever of approximately 114 which was abated by cold packs. The Hulstein home is still quarantined and Fred is now ill with the disease.
Miss Hulstein was to be eighteen this June. She was born on the same farm she was living on at the time of her death. The farm is four and one half miles northwest of here.
She is survived by her parents, two brothers, Fred and Albertus, and Emma and Etta are twin sisters as are Minerva and Winerva.
Services were held Tuesday afternoon in the yard at the home and a brief service was conducted at the Carmel Cemetery where she was interred. Rev. W. Rottschaeffer officiated.

Etta was born December 2, 1919 near Carmel, IA, daughter of Conrad and Grace (Van Maanen) Hulstein.
She married Bert Baker on September 28, 1945 at Rock Rapids, IA. Together they farmed south of Rock Valley then in 1960 west of Canton, SD. Bert and Etta retired to Rock Valley in April of 1982.
Etta died Friday, October 26, 2007 at Sanford USD Health Center, Sioux Falls, SD. She was 87 years, 10 months, and 25 days of age.
Etta is survived by her husband, Bert; sons, Walter (Carol) Baker and Conrad (Linda) Baker all of Canton, Gene Baker of Centerville, SD; daughter, Jane (Carl) Kienast of Centerville, SD; sisters, Carolyn DeKam of Rock Valley, twin sister, Emma (John) Vogel of Slayton, MN, Gertrude Vonk of Mountain Lake, MN, Viola (William) Langfeldt of Rock Rapids, IA, Minerva (Gerrit John) Vander Streek of Rock Rapids, Winerva Hulstein of Sioux Center, Myna (Leonard) Nyhof of Sioux Center, IA; 8 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers Gerrit Fredrich Hulstein and Albertus John Hulstein; sister, Mina Hulstein.

Bert Baker, 91, of Canton, formerly of Rock Valley, died Friday January 6, 2011 at Sanford Canton-Inwood Medical Center. Bert was born June 28, 1920 at NW of Alvord, IA, son of Walter and Jennie (Van Den Berg) Baker. Bert married Etta Emma Hulstein on September 28, 1945 at Rock Rapids, IA. Together they farmed south of Rock Valley until moving west of Canton. They retired from farming and moved to Rock Valley in April of 1982. Bert helped John Harmelink and the Rock Valley Hay Sale Company. Etta died October 26, 2007. Bert later moved to Hiawatha Heights Assisted Living near Canton.
Survivors include sons, Walter (Carol) Baker, Conrad (Linda) Baker all of Canton, Gene Baker of Centerville, SD; daughter, Jane Kienast of Centerville, SD; 8 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; brother, Gerrit (Joanne) Baker of Doon, IA; sister-in-law, Anna Marie Baker of Rock Valley.
Bert was preceded in death by his wife, Etta; son-in-law, Carl Kienast; brother, Peter Baker.

Emma was born the daughter of Conrad & Grace VanMaanen Hulstein. She grew up on farms in Sioux County, IA. On April 10, 1949 she and John Vogel were married at her parent's home near Sioux Center, IA. Following their marriage they lived in Sanborn for one year. In 1950 they moved to a farm near Iona, MN and later to farms near Worthington, MN and Norcross, MN. In 1962 they moved to Currie, MN before semi retiring and moving to an acreage between Currie and Slayton.
In October 2010 Emma became a resident of the Golden Living Center-Slayton. She was a member of the First Reformed Church in Slayton and was active in the ladies circle, taught Sunday school and Bible school. Emma delivered meal on wheels for many years and loved visiting with the many people she was delivering to. Emma enjoyed gardening, reading and doing crafts.
John & Emma were the parents of Peter, and Grace.
Emma's siblings include Carolyn Dekam, Gertrude Vonk, Minerva Vanderstreek, Winerva Hulstein, Myna Nyhof, Myna Hulstein, twin sister, Etta Baker, Viola Langfeldt, Gerrit (Fred), and Albertus Hulstein.
Funeral services were held from First Reformed Church in Slayton, Rev. Mark Ellens officiating.
John Vogel was born on March 19, 1922 in Obrien County, Iowa to Peter and Minnie Kross Vogel. He grew up on the family farm and attended country school. Being raised on a farm John learned the value of hard work that was a lesson he would carry with him throughout his life.
On March 22, 1944 John enlisted in the United States Army. He was stationed in Europe during World War II and received three Bronze Stars.
Following his discharge on April 23, 1946 John attended mechanic school in Chicago, IL where he learned skills that served him well in his farming career.
On April 10, 1949 John and Emma Hulstein were married at her parents home near Sioux Center, IA.
Following their marriage they lived in Sanborn, IA. Then in 1950 they moved to a farm near Iona, MN, and later to farms near Worthington, MN and Norcross, MN. In 1962 they moved to Currie and in 1985 they moved to an acreage between Currie and Slayton.
Emma passed away on December 1, 2010 John remained on the acreage until October 2013 when he moved to Lindenwood Assisted Living in Slayton.
John passed away there on Friday, January 8, 2016 at the age of 93.
He was a member of the First Reformed Church in Slayton. John enjoyed attending farm auctions and working in his shop. He especially enjoyed family get-togethers and spending time with his great-grandchildren.
Survivors include his two children and their spouses, Peter and Jeanne Vogel of Currie, MN, Grace and David Talsma of Chandler, MN; five grandchildren, Eric and Amanda Vogel, Daniel and Alison Vogel, Brian Vogel, Michael Vogel and fiancée Samantha Seys, and Jesse and Paige Talsma, seven great-grandchildren, Abigail Vogel, Brenna Vogel, Corbin Vogel, Delaynie Vogel, Jameson Talsma, Daphnie Talsma, and Thatcher Talsma; and one sister, Minnie Schwartz of Tracy, MN. He is preceded in death by his parents, wife, Emma, brothers, Pete and Bill Vogel, three sisters, Margaret Hielkema, Pearl VanderNaald and Mina Kleinwolterink.
Funeral Services First Reformed Church in Slayton, MN on Thursday, January 14, 2016 at 10:30 a.m. with Rev. Aaron Punt officiating. The organist is Viola Hoekman. The pallbearers are Eric Vogel, Jesse Talsma, Daniel Vogel, Brian Vogel, Michael Vogel and Larry Vogel. Interment is at Slayton Memorial Gardens Slayton, MN.

Albertus Hulstein, 65, of Rock Rapids died Friday, April 8, at Merrill Pioneer Community Hospital in Rock Rapids.
Services were at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, April 12, at First Reformed Church in Rock Rapids. Burial was in Riverview Cemetery at Rock Rapids.
Hulstein was born February 12, 1923, in Carmel. He married Artie Hop April 10, 1947, in Steen, Minnesota. They farmed in Rock Rapids until 1954, when they moved to Beaver Creek, Minnesota. In 1965 they moved to Edgerton, Minnesota. He retired in 1985 and moved to Rock Rapids.
Survivors include his wife; a son, Conrad of Hardwick, Minnesota; two daughters, Antonette "Nettie" Roskam of Rock Rapids and Gloria Boelman of Aberdeen, South Dakota; eight grandchildren; a brother, Fred of Rock Rapids; and eight sisters, Carolyn De Kam and Etta Baker, both of Rock Valley, Emma Vogel of Currie, Minnesota, Gertrude Vonk of Heron Lake, Minnesota, Viola Langfeldt and Minerva Vander Streek, both of Rock Rapids, and Winerva Hulstein and Myna Nyhof, both of Sioux Center.

Artie Hulstein, age 90 of Rock Rapids died Thursday, January 8, 2009 at Lyon Manor in Rock Rapids, Iowa.
Funeral services held, Monday, January 12, 2009 at the First Reformed Church in Rock with burial at Riverview Cemetery in Rock Rapids, Iowa.
Artie Hendrika (Hop) Hulstein was born on December 9, 1918, the daughter of Jake Sr. and Antonia (Dibbetts) Hop in Hardereyk, Netherlands. She entered the United States at the age of eighteen months, with her parents, three sisters and two brothers.
They settled on a farm near Rock Valley, Iowa and when Artie turned eight years old they moved to a farm near Rock Rapids. Artie attended country school thru the eighth grade.
On April 10, 1947, she was united in marriage to Albertus John Hulstein in Steen, Minnesota, sharing this experience with her sister Alyda in a double wedding.
Artie and her husband farmed in the Rock Rapids area until 1954 when they moved to Beaver Creek, Minnesota and farmed until 1966. They then moved to Edgerton, Minnesota and farmed there until 1985, when they retired and moved back to Rock Rapids.
On April 8, 1988, Artie's husband died when they were just two days short of their 41st Wedding Anniversary. Albertus passed away at the age of sixty-five.
Artie continued to live in her home until going to live at the Lyon Manor Nursing Home in Rock Rapids in January of 2007.
Artie is survived by three children: Nettie (husband Harvey) Roskam of Rock Rapids, Gloria (husband Bill) Boelman of Aberdeen, South Dakota and Conrad (wife Brenda) Hulstein of Hardwick, Minnesota; eight grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren; two sisters: Alyda Saeger of Rock Rapids and Tillie Wietzema of Sibley, Iowa; two sisters-in-law: Marie Hop of California and Gerdena Hop of Omaha, Nebraska; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, four sisters: Gertrude Hop, Jennie Jabaay, Johanna Hop and Christine Van Den Hul; six brothers: Peter Hop, Gerrit Hop, Bernard Hop, Jake Hop, Jake Hop Jr. and Anthony Hop; and a great-grandchild, Nathan Reker.

Viola Arvilla (Hulstein) Langfeldt was born on Sunday; July 15, 1928 at Carmel; Sioux County, Iowa. She was the daughter of: Conrad and Grace (Van Maanen) Hulstein. Viola attended country school and at the age of 14 years she moved to Rock Rapids with her family. She continued her country school education and graduated from the 8th grade in May of 1942. She attended Alvord High School one year, and then graduated from Sioux Center High School in 1946. She received her Normal Training Certificate and taught in a country school for 4 years.
On November 22, 1948 she was united in marriage to Adrain Delfs. Five children were joined to this union. They moved to a farm northwest of Rock Rapids. In November of 1958 they moved into Rock Rapids where Viola worked as a substitute teacher for Central Lyon Public School. She sold Avon for 22 years and worked for Lane's Café for 20 years. In March of 1972 she attended Nettleton College in Sioux Falls. In 1974 she worked at Hogan Construction Company.
In 1975 she married Orville Nagel. After 5 years of marriage, her husband, Orville died in April of 1980, as a result of a massive heart attack. In 1984 Viola retired from Hogan Construction Company and was married to William Langfeldt on May 11, 1984. She always kept busy enjoying crafts, playing cards and coffee parties. She enjoyed her grandkids and will be remembered for her commitment to her grandchildren throughout their lives. Viola and Willie were blessed with several years of wintering in Texas.
She remained very active with many activities such as playing shuffle board, making quilts for the needy, choir, Dinner Date, Meals on Wheels and helping in the kitchen with holiday dinners. She was a member of the Peace Lutheran Church in Rock Rapids and active with the Ladies Aid and Peace Quilters. She taught Sunday School for 20 years and served as secretary of the Ladies Aid. Viola Arvilla (Hulstein) Langfeldt, age 81, passed away on Saturday; April 10, 2010 at the Sanford Medical Center in Sioux Falls; Minnehaha County, South Dakota.
Those left to mourn her passing are: Her husband, William Langfeldt of Rock Rapids, IA; three daughters, Glenda Moser of Cary, NC, Charlene (Alvin) Buffington of Upland, CA and Brenda (Mike) Dunn of Harford, SD; two sons, Henry (Sue) Delfs of Kingsley, IA and Darryl (Jean) Delfs of Council Bluffs, IA; thirteen grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; six sisters, Carolyn DeKam of Rock Valley and Emma (John) Vogel of Currie, MN, Gert Vonk of Mountain Lake, MN, Minerva (Gerrit John) Vander Streek of Rock Rapids, IA, Winerva Holstein of Sioux Center, IA, Myna Nyhof of Sioux Center, IA; a brother-in-law, Bert Baker of Canton, SD and many other extended family.
Viola was preceded in death by her husband, Orville Nagel; parents, Conrad and Grace Hulstein; a young child, sister, Myna Hulstein, and other sister, Etta Baker ; two brothers, Albertus Hulstein and Fred Hulstein; and two sisters-in-law, Artie Hulstein and Josephine Hulstein; three brothers-in-law, Leonard Nyhof, Henry Vonk and Marvin DeKam. May they rest in peace.
Visitation will be from: 2:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. with the family present from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday; April 13, 2010 at the Jurrens Funeral Home of Rock Rapids. Funeral services will begin at: 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday; April 14, 2010 at Peace Lutheran Church in Rock Rapids, Iowa with the Reverend Mark Hansen officiating. Interment will be at the Riverview Cemetery in Rock Rapids, Iowa. The Jurrens Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
