Obituary of Raymond Sr

Raymond Hulstein, Sr., 96, Edgerton, died Tuesday, Jan. 18, 2005 at the Luverne Hospital after suffering a major heart attack.

Funeral services were held Saturday, Jan. 29 at Bethel Christian Reformed Church in Edgerton. Interment was in Hillside Cemetery, Edgerton.

Raymond Hulstein Sr. was born to Gerrit and Cornelia (VerPloegh) Hulstein on Nov. 3, 1908 in Sioux Center, Iowa. In his youth, Raymond farmed with his father.

He married Della Gritters on July 20, 1927 at her parent's home. Following their marriage they farmed near Sioux Center until 1949 when they moved to Edgerton where they farmed.

In 1971 he retired and they moved into Edgerton. Following his retirement he continued to help different farmers with field work and filling silage bags.

His wife, Della, entered the Edgebrook Care Center where she lived for five years. Raymond made his twice a day visit to his wife of 73 years, until the day she died on Easter morning, April 23, 2000.

Raymond lived alone in his home until Feb. 25, 2002 when he moved into the Edgerton Estate Apartments.

He was a member of Bethel Christian Reformed Church, Edgerton.

He is survived by his 13 children; Berdie (Cornie) Broek and Loie Buyert, both of Sioux Center, Iowa; Gary (Lavonne) Hulstein, Ed (Arlene) Hulstein, Marge (Arv) Mesman, Ray Jr. (Teen) Hulstein, all of Edgerton; Leonard (Jeanne) Hulstein, Chandler; Delmar (Faye) Hulstein, Edgerton; Garneth (Harold) VanSurksum, Luverne; Leroy (Faye) Hulstein, Woodstock; Sharon (Pete) Struiksma, Bellflower, Calif.; Iva (Jim) Hoogeveen, Luverne; Karon (Lee) Blom, Pipestone; 46 grandchildren; 116 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife; five brothers, Cornelius, Conrad, William, Henry and Steve; three sisters, Hattie Kastine, Pearl Bosch, Johanna Lehudis; two sons-in-law, Barney Buyert and Tony Vallejo; six grandchildren; one great-grandchild and one great-great-grandchild.

BROEK, CORNELIUS AND ALBERTHA (HULSTEIN)

Cornelius (Cornie), son of John and Elsie (Wassink) Broek, whose story is elsewhere in this book, was born on January 23, 1926 near Sioux Center. Cornie attended country school through the 5th grade and then attended Christian School.

Albertha (Berdie) Bernice Hulstein Broek was born on January 9, 1928 to Raymond end Della (Gritters) Hulstein. Berdie is the oldest of thirteen children and was born near Sioux Center where she also attended country school.

Cornie and Berdie were married on February 11, 1948 and to this marriage were born four daughters: Judith Rae, Fonda Adell, Diane Faye and Kathy Ellen.

Judith was born on August 3, 1948 and married Harvey Nibbelink on October 16, 1968. They have two children: Todd Alan and Kimberly Joy. Harvey was born on January 14, 1948 and is the son of Gerrit and Henrietta Nibbelink.

Fonda was born on March 16, 1950 and married Warren Post on September 11, 1970. They have three children: Arlin Dale, Angela Joy and Nicole Leigh. Warren was born on March 24, 1948 and is the son of Walter and Henrietta Post.

Diane was born on September 25, 1957 and married Arlin John Van De Berg on July 22, 1977. They have three sons: Justin John, Jordan Alan and Jared Brock. Arlin is the son of Elmer and Gertrude Van De Berg and was born on July 11, 1955.

Kathy was born on February 13, 1959 and married Loren Dean Velgersdyk on June 5, 1979. They have one son: Kendall Dean. Loren is the son of Harvey and Christine Velgersdyk and was born on March 9, 1959.

Cornie and Berdie farmed their first years together starting with a 1943 R Minneapolis. They lived east of Carmel, later moving to Maurice, Hull and Ireton. In 1957 they purchased two acres of land from Cornie's parents which were located three miles west of Sioux Center. There they built a home and a two thousand laying cage house where they raised their own laying hens. Cornie also sold Dekalb seed corn and Kent Feed for fourteen years.

In 1973 they moved to Sioux Center and bought Sam's Variety, where both are now employed.

Cornie has served on many school boards including the Sioux Center Christian School, Western Christian High School and Dordt College. He is currently serving on the Dordt College Financial Planning Council. He also served on the consistories of the Bethel Christian Reformed Church and the Faith Christian Reformed Church, where he is currently an elder. He also served on the Memorabilia Committee for the Centennial.

CORNIE BROEK, 79, of Sioux Center, Iowa died Saturday, 5/14, at the Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, 5/18, at 10am at the Faith Christian Reformed Church of Sioux Center with Rev. Bernie Haan officiating. Interment will follow in Memory Gardens Cemetery of Sioux Center.

Cornelius "Cornie" Broek was born January 23, 1926 to John and Elsie (Wassink) Broek in Sioux Center. Cornie was raised in the Sioux Center area, attending country school and the Sioux Center Christian School.

On February 11, 1948, he was united in marriage to Berdie Hulstein in Hull, Iowa. The couple was blessed with four daughters. They farmed for many years in the area before moving to an acreage west of Sioux Center where Cornie sold feed & seed corn and raised laying hens. In 1973, Cornie and Berdie moved their family into Sioux Center.

Two years later they purchased Sam's Variety store located downtown Sioux Center and operated it until retirement in 1991. Always one to keep busy, Cornie worked part-time at the Dollar General Store and Wal-Mart after retiring.

Cornie was an active member of Bethel Christian Reformed Church of Sioux Center.

Later hearing God's challenge, Cornie chose to become a charter member of Faith Christian Reformed Church. He served as a deacon and elder in each church along with serving in countless other ways. Through his life Cornie was a Christian example for his family that will be treasured for generations to come. He also supported Christian education and agreed to serve on the boards of the Sioux Center Christian School, Western Christian High School and Dordt College.

In his spare time Cornie liked golfing, and playing pool or other games with friends. Meeting for coffee was a must along with spending time with his children and grandchildren. For several years Cornie and Berdie spent the winter months in Arizona. He truly enjoyed people as well as visiting with friends, relatives and shut-ins .

Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 57 years, Berdie Broek of Sioux Center; four daughters and sons-in-law: Judy and Harv Nibbelink, Fonda and Warren Post, Diane and Arlin Van De Berg all of Sioux Center and Kathy and Loren Velgersdyk of Sioux Falls; along with his 12 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren.

Cornie is also survived by his brother and sister-in-law, John and Gert Broek of Sioux Center; two sisters and brothers-in-law: Mathilda and John Van Beek of Orange City and Chris and Pete Schouten of Sioux Center; two sisters-in-law: Cornelia Broek of Rock Valley and Cora Broek of Sioux Center; two brothers-in-law: Jim Franken and Gaynor Te Grotenhuis of Sioux Center and numerous nieces and nephews.

Cornie was preceded in death by his grandson, Justin Van De Berg; great-grandson, Dylan Nibbelink; his parents; three brothers: Dave, Arend and Bill Broek; four sisters: Margaret De Koter, Nell Franken, Elsie Te Grotenhuis and Bertha Klein.

Mrs. Albertha "Berdie" Broek, age 89, of Sioux Center, passed away on Tuesday, April 4, 2017, at the Royale Meadows Care Center in Sioux Center.

There will be a funeral service on Friday, April 7, at 1:30pm, at the Faith Christian Reformed Church in Sioux Center. The Rev. Bob Pollema will officiate. Interment will follow the service at the Memory Gardens Cemetery in Sioux Center. Visitation will be after 4:00pm on Thursday, with the family present from 5:00pm to 7:00pm, at the CHURCH.

Arrangements are with the Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City.

Albertha Bernice, the daughter of Raymond Sr. and Della (Gritters) Hulstein, was born on January 9, 1928, in Sioux Center, the first of thirteen children. She was raised in the Hull and Sioux Center areas.

On February 11, 1948, she married Cornelius Broek in Hull. Thru the years they lived on several farms, until building a house and chicken farm west of Sioux Center. In 1973, they moved into Sioux Center. Besides being a homemaker, she also worked at the Dordt College Book Store and from 1975 to 1991, she and her husband operated Sam’s Variety Store, both in Sioux Center. They then enjoyed wintering in Arizona. Cornie passed away on May 14, 2005, in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

In September of 2016, Berdie became a resident of Crown Pointe Independent Living, and in January of this year, she transferred to the Royale Meadows Care Center, both in Sioux Center.

She was a charter member of the Faith Christian Reformed Church, where she was an active supporter. She enjoyed playing games with friends, fixing puzzles, watching Dordt basketball and volleyball games, crocheting, and baking for others.

Survivors include her four daughters, Judy Nibbelink; Fonda, and her husband, Warren Post; and Diane, and her husband Arlin Van De Berg, all of Sioux Center; and Kathy, and her husband, Loren Velgersdyk, of Sioux Falls; thirteen grandchildren, thirteen great-grandchildren; siblings, Lavonne Hulstein, Arlene Hulstein, Marge Mesman, Ray Hulstein, Jr., Leonard and Jean Hulstein, Delmar and Faye Hulstein, Garneth and Harold Van Surksum, Lee and Faye Hulstein, Sharon and Pete Struiksma, Iva Hoogeveen, and Karon and Lee Blom; and Cornie’s sister, Chris Schouten; and sister-in-law, Gert Broek.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Harv Nibbelink; two grandchildren, Angie Post and Justin Van De Berg; a great-grandson, Dylan Nibbelink; siblings, Gary Hulstein, Ed Hulstein, Lois Buyert; and in-laws, Arvin Mesman, Teen Hulstein, Barney Buyert, and Jim Hoogeveen.

BUYERT, BARNEY AND CAROLINE LOIS "LOIE" (HULSTEIN)

Barney John Buyert was born April 5, 1929 to Nick and Hermina "Minnie" (Kempers) Buyert. He grew up on a farm northwest of Sioux Center, Iowa. Barney attended Welcome #4 Country School until the fourth grade, then he attended Sioux Center Christian School.

On February 8, 1950 he married Caroline Lois "Loie" Hulstein at the Protestant Reformed Church in Hull, Iowa. Loie was born to Raymond and Della (Gritters) Hulstein on November 17, 1929 at Sioux Center, Iowa. Her parents later moved to Edgerton, Minnesota.

Loie attended Welcome #4 Country School until the eighth grade, then she attended Sioux Center Christian School and Western Christian High School. This was followed by summer school at Westmar in Le Mars, Iowa. She then taught the country school north of Carmel.

Barney and Loie lived on an acreage 3 miles north and 1/2 mile west of Sioux Center when they were first married. After 3 years they moved just west to the farm place where they are still living now.

Barney and Loie had 5 children. Gene Allen was born March 21, 1951. Gene died on July 5, 1957.

Larry Dean was born April 19, 1954. He attended Southeast Area Vocational Technical School in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. On October 17, 1986 Larry married Kathi De Vos. Larry is Assistant Manager and Head of Sales at Den Hoed Greenhouse. His wile Kathi graduated trom Dordt College with an accounting major and is employed as a salesperson at Ver Hoef Chevrolet.

Jan Allen was born on April 26, 1958. He married Dona Cap on October 26, 1984. Jan farms with his father and Dona is a Mary Kay Beauty Consultant.

Pamela Joy was born March 16, 1962. Pam attended Nettleton College in Sioux Falls, South Dakota for the Accounting/Secretarial program. On June 17, 1983 she married Rob Kroese. Rob graduated from Dordt College with an accounting major and is presently a Certified Public Accountant and is an owner of Kroese and Kroese, P.C. Pam is now a homemaker with their 2 children Jason Lee born May 14, 1986 and Sarah Joy born October 25, 1989.

Dawn Ranae, the youngest, was born September 21, 1965. Dawn graduated from Nettleton College in the Legal Secretary program. On September 2, 1989 she married Matt Thompson. Matt graduated from the University of Wisconsin-LaCrosse with a major in Business Administration and a minor in Sociology. Matt is Production Manager at Sioux Preme Egg. Dawn works in the Credit Department of K-Products in Orange City, Iowa. Barney and Loie are members of Bethel Christian Reformed Church.

GERRIT "GARY" MILTON HULSTEIN, age 81, of Leota, died Friday, July 26, 2013, at the Edgerton Care Center in Edgerton. He was born May 16, 1932, in Sioux Center, IA, to Raymond and Della (Gritters) Hulstein. Gary attended country school near Sioux Center, IA; and later, the Sioux Center Christian School. The family lived in various places including Carmel, IA, Edgerton & Woodstock.

Gary married LaVonne Mouw on January 15, 1952, at the Ebenezer Christian Reformed Church in Leota. After their marriage, the couple farmed north of Leota. In 1965, they moved to their current farm near Leota. Gary was a farmer; he also drove truck with his son, Myron.

He was a member of the Ebenezer Christian Reformed Church in Leota; the South West Christian School Board; NFO; Pro-Life and he volunteered for many other organizations. He also served on the Leota Fourth of July Celebration Board where he led the parade for over thirty five years.

Gary is survived by his wife, LaVonne Hulstein, Leota; four children, Lora (Randy) Pankonen, Little Falls; Myron (Mavis) Hulstein, Leota; Marvella (Jerry) Sandness, Chandler; and Dana (Dan) Gunnink, Chandler; eight grandchildren, Kristi (Joel) DeBoer, Kirk (Ashley) Hulstein, Kayla Wegener, Justin, Amanda & Kaitlyn Gunnink, and Sean & Steven Sandness; seven great grandchildren; five brothers, Ed (Arlene) Hulstein, Edgerton; Raymond (Telena) Hulstein, Edgerton; Leonard (Jean) Hulstein, Chandler; Delmer (Faye) Hulstein, Edgerton; and LeRoy (Faye) Hulstein, Woodstock; and six sisters, Berdie Broek, Sioux Center, IA; Marge Mesman, Edgerton; Garneth (Harold) Van Surksem, Luverne; Sharon (Pete) Stuiksma, Bellflower, CA; Iva (Jim) Hoogeveen, Brandon, SD; and Karen (Leland) Blom, Pipestone. Gary will also be fondly remembered by many hired help.

He was preceded in death by his sixteen month son, Jerry Dale Hulstein, in 1954; his parents; and his sister, Loie Buyert.

Visitation will be from 5-8 pm Monday at the Ebenezer Christian Reformed Church in Leota; and also one hour prior to the service at the church on Tuesday. Funeral will be 10:30 am Tuesday at the Christian Reformed Church in Leota. Burial will be in the Leota Community Cemetery.

The Leota Burial Association and Dingmann Funeral Home, in Adrian, are in charge of arrangements.
