Bolt of Lightning Takes Life Of Gerrit Hulstein

Death came instantly to Gerrit Hulstein, when he was struck by lightning in his farm yard north of Alton after walking home from the field during a severe local shower. He was found by one of the family.

Mr. Hulstein was born at Sioux Center, March 5, 1892 and passed away Friday afternoon, March 29th at the age of 54 years and 24 days.

He was married on January 17, 1913 at Carmel to Tillie Wichers, who survives him, with 6 sons: Steve of Sheldon; Fred, William and Marion of Hospers; Gerrit and Richard Hulstein of Hynes, Calif.; and 2 daughters: Mrs. J. Bartels of Bellflower, Calif, and Grace at home.

His aged father Mr. Steven Hulstein of Sioux Center also survives him, also a sister and 8 half brothers and sisters.

Funeral services were held at 1 o'clock at the home and 1:30 at the First Ref. church of Hospers, Rev. G. Docter officiating. Interment was in the Hospers Cemetery.

Obituary Local Paper after July 27, 2005

Grace J. Hulstein, 90, Sheldon died Wed. July 27, at Prairie View Retirement Home in Sanborn, IA. Services were Sat. July 30, at the First Reformed Church in Sheldon, with the Rev. David Brower and Gordon Bloemendaal officiating. Burial was at East Lawn Cemetery in Sheldon, under the direction of Vander Ploeg Funeral Home of Sheldon.

Grace Hulstein, daughter of John and Minnie (Vande Weerd) Vlieger, born June 20. 1915 in rural Hospers. She grew up in the Hospers and Alton areas, where she attended a country school.

She married Fred Hulstein on Nov. 29, 19444 at the home of her parents near Hospers. They farmed near Hospers until 1963, when they moved to a farm north of Sheldon. They moved into Sheldonin 1983. Mr. Hulstein died Oct. 21, 1992 in Sheldon. She became a resident of Prairier View Nursing Home in Sheldon in June 2004.

She was a member of First Reformed Church in Sheldon. She enjoyed gardening, word puzzles, reading and visiting with her family and friends.

Survivors include three children, Rodney and Beth Hulstein of Melvin, Loren and Debra Hulstein of Sheldon, and Sharon and Myron Nichols of Dayton, OR; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two sisters, Harriet Hulstein of Fulda, MN, and Jeane Vlieger of Sheldon; and five sisters-in-law, Gertrude Hulstein of Sheldon, Arlene Vligers of Sheldon, Grayce Vander Broek of Folsom, CA, Johanna and Harvey Van Es of Seal Beach, CA, and Nette Hulstein of Mesa, AZ.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Fred Hulstein; three sisters, Annetta Joan Vlieger at 2 yrs old, Theresa Hulstein, and Mildred Vlieger in infancy; and two brothers, Nelson Vlieger and Robert Vlieger in infancy.

William "Bill" Hulstein, 86, Ashton, died Monday morning, July 7 at Northwest Iowa Health Center in Sheldon. Services were Thurs. July 10, at the First Presbyterian Church in Ashton, with the Rev. Dale Lint officiating. Burial was at the Gilman Township Cemetery in Ashton, under the direction of Walton-Roste Funeral Home in Ashton.

Bill Hulstein son of Gerrit and Hildegaard (Wickers) Hulstein, was born Sept. 23, 1916, in Carmel. He grew up on a farm near Carmel. His family moved to a farm near Hospers in 1920. He attended country school in Hospers, and after his education worked on the family farm.

He married Theresa Vlieger on June 6, 1950 at her parent's home in Alton. They started farming near Hospers. They moved to a farm near Ashton in 1953. He thoroughly enjoyed farming; it was his hobby and passion. He found great pleasure in working the soil. He was diagnosed with cancer about two years ago and his health began to fail. As the cancer progressed, he became more homebound. He was admitted to Northwest Iowa Health Center on June 30. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Ashton, where he faithfully attended.

Survivors include his wife, Theresa Hulstein of Ashton; two sons, Leon of Ashton, and Larry of Ashton; and two sisters, Johanna Van Es of Seal Beach, CA and Grayce Vander Broek of Folsom, CA.

He was preceded in death by five brothers, Fred, Mike, Steve, Rich and Gerrit Hulstein.

Theresa Ann Hulstein, 83, Ashton died Sat. Feb. 7 at Prairie View Home in Sanborn. Services were Tues. Feb. 10, First Presbyterian Church in Ashton, with the Rev. Dale Lint officiating, Burial was at Gilman Township Cemetery in Ashton, under the direction of Walton-Roste Funeral Home in Ashton.

Theresa Hulstein, daughter of John and Minnie Vander Weerd, was born Feb. 1, 1921 in rural Hospers, IA. She grew up in the Hospers and Alton area where she attended country school. She married William "Bill" Hulstein on June 6, 1950 at her parents home near Hospers. They farmed with his brother Fred Hulstein and Fred's wife Grace until 1953 when they moved to a farm near Ashton. She enjoyed her big garden of vegetables and flowers along with raising chickens. Her sons fondly remember that whatever vegetables their mother grew in the garden would invariably be canned at season's end and be added to her large collection of canned goods. She also grew many flowers in her garden, including gladiolas and dahlias. Her chickens also were an important part of the Hulstein farm life. She maintained 500 layers along with raising 500 pullets. Mr. Hulstein died July 7, 2003.

She remained in their home until she fell and broke her hip. She underwent hip surgery and became a resident of Prairie View Home in Sanborn six weeks ago. She underwent two other hip surgeries and then suffered a stroke that left her unable to communicate.

Church was important to her and she was an active member of First Presbyterian Church in Ashton.

Survivors include two sons, Larry Hulstein of Ashton and Leon Hulstein of Melvin; three sisters, Grace Hulstein of Sheldon, Jeane Vlieger of Sheldon, and Harriet Hulstein of Fulda, MN; and a sister-in-law, Arlene Vlieger of Sheldon.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William "Bill" Hulstein.

Obituary of Harriet Mae

Harriet was born the daughter of John & Minnie (Vande Weerd) Vlieger in rural Hospers. She grew up on the family farm and attended country school. Harriet was united in marriage to Marion "Mike" Hulstein on February 23, 1945 in Hospers. After their marriage they lived near Newkirk, IA, Hospers, IA and Fulda, MN. They moved to Louisburg, MO in 1952 and to Sheldon, IA in 1955. In 1964 they returned to Fulda to farm and retired there in 1984. They moved into Fulda in 1988. Mike passed away in May of 1998. Harriet remained at home until entering the Maple Lawn Nursing Home in March of 2012. Harriet passed away at the Maple Lawn Nursing Home at the age of 87. She was a member of American Reformed Church in Worthington, MN.

Harriet was a patient and hard working wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She enjoyed her home and was an excellent cook and baker and her family especially loved the many chocolate chip cookies she would make. She also enjoyed reading, embroidery work and watching TV.

Mike & Harriet are the parents of Marilyn (Virgil) Van De Stouwe, Shirley Hulstein, and Gerry (Shannon Welling) Hulstein; two daughter-in-laws, Sharon (Mike Pillatzki) Hulstein and Diane Hulstein.

Sons Wayne & Brian preceded Mike & Harriet in death.

Harriet is survived by 8 grandchildren, Jill (Jim) Zeutenhorst, Robert (Theresa) Van Meeteren, Jason (Amy) Hulstein, Kevin (Nicole) Hulstein, Michael, Brittany and Courtney Hulstein and Aron Hulstein; 10 great-grandchildren; special niece, Myra (Bill) Stewart; sister, Jeane Vlieger; sister-in-law, Grayce Vander Broek and brother-in-law, Harvey Van Es. She is preceded in death by her husband, 2 brothers, Nelson Vlieger and an infant brother, 4 sisters, Grace and Theresa Hulstein and 2 infant sisters.

Funeral services will be held from American Reformed Church Worthington, MN on September 4, 2013 with Rev. Irvin Van Leeuwen officiating.
