VREEMAN, HEIN AND JOHANNA (HULSTEIN)

Hein Vreeman, son of Gerrit and Christina Vreeman, was born November 12, 1903, at Sioux Center, Iowa. He attended rural school and was a farmhand during his young years.

On November 28, 1923 Hein married Johanna Hulstein. Johanna, daughter of Steve and Johanna Hulstein was born November 25, 1907 at Sioux Center, Iowa.

They farmed at Sioux Center for a few years but spent most of their farm life three miles east and two miles north of Hull. In 1945 they had a farm sale and moved back to Sioux Center and purchased Vreeman Meats and Lockers. After retirement Hein worked for John Byl at Sioux Automation. Johanna was a homemaker and a marvelous cook. For a time she baked angel food cakes for others. Johanna also owned House of Fashion Clothing store for ten years. Hein and Johanna ware members of the Bethel Christian Reformed Church at Sioux Center.

Hein and Johanna had two children; Gerrit William born May 5, 1924 at Sioux Center, and Joan Eleanor, born January 10, 1930 at Hull, Iowa.

Gary married Wilhe1mina. de Vries on December 26, 1946, at Zeeland, Michigan. Gary and "Nickie" had ten children: Wilhelmina Johanna, born November 11, 1947, born at Hull, Iowa; Bertha Joanne, born March 15, 1949 at Hull, Iowa; Gerrit Hein, born May 19, 1950, at Sioux Center, Iowa; Jane Ann, born August 26, 1951 at Sioux Center, Iowa; Thomas Christian born March 31, 1953 at Alameda, California; Mary Christine born November 13, 1954 at Alameda, California; Steven John born May 30, 1956 at Sheldon, Iowa; Frederick Leon born August 26, 1958 at Sheldon, Iowa; Joel Willard born August 16, 1960 at Holland, Michigan; and Joan Evelyn born December 5, 1961 at Holland, Michigan. Gary taught school for many years and spent a few years with his father in Sioux Center. He earned his Doctoral Degree in psychology from the University of Michigan and spent the last ten years of his life in Anchorage, Alaska where he was director of mental health for the City of Anchorage. Gary died of a heart attack on August 24, 1983. He is buried in Anchorage, Alaska.

Joan married William Mouw on June 6, 1952. Joan taught school for many years at Sioux Center and Bill is a. partner with his brother Marion at Mouw Motor of Sioux Center, Iowa. There were no children.

Hein died following heart surgery on April 21, 1980 and Johanna died at our local nursing home on August 7,1984.

Hein and Johanna will he remembered as very hospitable people, always entertaining new people into their home.

Obituaries of Hein and Johanna

Hein Vreeman, 77, Sioux Center, died Monday, April 21, in a Sioux City hospital.

Services were at 10 a.m. Thursday in Bethel Christian Reformed Church at Sioux Center. The Rev. B.J. Haan and the Rev. Jerry Vreeman officiated. Burial was in Memory Gardens Cemetery under the direction of the Vander Ploeg Funeral Home of Sioux Center.

Mr. Vreeman was born Nov. 12, 1902, at Sioux Center.

He married Johanna Hulstein Nov. 28, 1923, at Sioux Center.

He was a farmer and a businessman. Mr. vreeman served as a deacon of Bethel Reformed Church and was active in community services.

Survivors include the widow; a son, Gary W. of Anchorage, Alaska; a daughter, Mrs. William (Joan) Mouw of Sioux Center; two brothers, John of Raymond, Minn.; and William of Sheldon; six sisters, Mrs. Wiebe(Gerdena) De Vries, Mrs. Elmer (Christene) Den Herder, Mrs. Gordon (Ella) Den Herder, Mrs. Marinus (Bertha) Rensink, Mrs. Lester (Etta) Heusinkveld and Mrs. Henry (Lenora) Heynen, all of Sioux Center.

Johanna Vreeman, 77, of Sioux Center died Wednesday at a Sioux Center hospital following a brief illness.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Bethel Christian Reformed Church in Sioux Center. The Rev. B.J. Haan and the Rev. Jerry Vreeman officiated. Burial was in Memory Gardens in Sioux Center under the direction of the Vander Ploeg Funeral Home.

Mrs. Vreeman, the former Johanna Hulstein, was born Nov. 25, 1906, at Sioux Center.

She married Hein Vreeman Nov. 28, 1923, at Sioux Center. Mr. Vreeman died April 24, 1980.

Mrs. Vreeman operated the House of Fashion clothing store in Sioux Center and for years worked in a lunchroom at the Sheldon Sale Barn.

Survivors include one daughter, Mrs. Bill (Joan) Mouw of Sioux Center; five sisters, Mrs. Lane (Cora) Bunt of Sioux Center, Mrs. Arie G. (Winnie) Punt of Rock Valley, Mrs. Jake (Grace) Grandstra of Ocheyedan, Mrs. Clarence (Reka) Borst of Barlow Lake, Mich., and Mrs. Steve (Henrietta) Kiel of Sheldon.
