Sioux Center News 1971-05-27.
Helen Hulstein went to be with her Lord on Dec. 1 at the age of 105 years.
She lived in Denver for the past 67 years in her home on Washington Park with a wonderful view of the Rocky Mountains she loved so much.
She is survived by her daughter, Joyce Vroon, of Atlanta, GA, and her son, Calvin Hulstein and his wife, Anne Hulstein, of South Windsor, CT. Her husband, Neal, passed away in 1971.
She is predeceased by her son, Robert Hulstein and his wife, Janet Hulstein, and her son-in-law, Dr. David Vroon. She is survived by eight grandchildren, Charles and Carol Hulstein, Cheryl (Hulstein) and Garret Nydam, Caryn (Hulstein) and Jeff Hallowell, Bryan and Caroline Vroon, Valerie (Vroon) and Bob Raymond, Bradley and Brenda Vroon; Ross and Sarah Hulstein, Julie (Hulstein) and Anders Kristofferssen, and nineteen great-grandchildren.
Helen was born in 1906 in The Netherlands and immigrated in 1909 with her family on the Potsdam, settling first in the Rock Valley, IA area.
She was one of a few women to graduate from Calvin College in Grand Rapids, MI, in 1924 and began her career as an elementary school teacher.
She met her future husband, Neal Hulstein, in the Chicago area where they both taught elementary school classes across the hall from each other.
After marriage in 1934, she had to give up teaching, as married women were not allowed to teach in those days. The young family, now with three children, moved to Denver in 1943.
Helen was a life time member of the 2nd Christian Reformed Church (now Jewel Church). She taught in the Denver Christian School system from time to time as needed and as a volunteer taught English to immigrants for many years. She also taught Bible classes in her church and community for much of her life.
Helen loved to bake and is known throughout South Denver for her lemon meringue pies. She used to bake twenty-five or more at a time in her tiny kitchen to raise money for the Denver Christian Schools and Clermont Park.
She was often seen walking in Washington Park with her wonderful caregiver, Marilyn Towery, who was her live-in helper for six years. Helen loved to garden enjoying roses and peonies in her yard. She was a gracious hostess entertaining friends, relatives and visitors. This past summer she moved to Clermont Park, a nursing home where she volunteered her services for many years until recently.
There will be a memorial service honoring Helen's life at Clermont Park, 2480 S. Clermont St., Denver on Monday, Dec. 5 at 1:30 pm. In lieu of flowers, a donation to the Denver Christian Schools or Calvin College in Grand Rapids, MI would be appreciated.
Arrangements under the direction of Olinger Chapel Hill Mortuary & Cemetery, Centennial, Colorado.
