Harlan Richard Herzfeldt, 84, of Freeport died Monday, Jan. 10, 2005, in Freeport Memorial Hospital. He was born Aug. 13, 1920, in Mount Morris, the son of Otto R. and Ruby Mae Blake Herzfeldt.
Harlan married Iva M. Gilbertson Oct. 19, 1946, in Luverne, Minn.
He was employed at a printer at Kable Printing Co., Litho Productions in Madison, Wis., and
at Edward Hine Printing in Peoria; he retired in 1982.
Freeport resident since 1995.
Veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army, 45th Infantry Division as a
first lieutenant in the European Theater, and took part in the liberation of the
Dachau Concentration Camp.
He was of Lutheran faith and a member of Lithographers & Photoengravers Union.
Graduate of Mount Morris High School, Class of 1938.
Survivors include his wife, Iva; sons, Phillip (Patricia) Herzfeldt of Freeport,
Greg (Donna) Herzfeldt of Janesville, Wis., and Brian Herzfeldt of Chicago.
Predeceased by parents; and sister, Opal Murphy.
Service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 22, in Finch Funeral Home, 405 E. Hitt St., Mount Morris, with visitation from 1 p.m. to service time; the Rev. Darrell Kyle, pastor of St. Paul Lutheran Church, Oregon, will officiate. Memorial to be established.

She then moved to Minneapolis to work in the defense industry. After the war ended, they were married in the Presbyterian Church in Luverne, MN. They lived in Mount Morris, IL Madison, WI, Peoria, IL, Janesville, WI and Freeport,IL. Over her lifetime, Iva worked in various positions in editorial, engineering and office management. While living in Peoria, she was active serving ion the Board of Directors of March of Dimes and Friends of International Students at Bradley University. She was a volunteer coordinator and site manager at the Tallman House in Janesville, WI. She also became very active at the Taylor home of Stephenson County Historical Society.
Surviving are her sons, Phillip (Patricia) Herzfeldt of Freeport, IL., Brian Herzfeldt of Los Angeles, CA., and daughter-in-law Donna Herzfeldt of Janesville, WI., brother Bryce (Jean) Gilbertson, sister Faye Sahr of Minneapolis, MN., and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, son Gregory, sister Donna Schmidt, brothers-in-law Howard Schmidt and Roger Sahr.
There will be a memorial service to celebrate her life later this year in Minneapolis, MN., as per her request.
