BLEYENBERG, BEN AND ALBERTA (VAN MAANEN)

Ben Bleyenberg was the son of Derk and Aartje (Lagerwy) Bleyenberg. (See separate story.)

On Feb. 6, 1924, Ben Bleyenberg was united in marriage to Alberta Van Maanen, daughter of Bart and Mina Van Maanen in the Van Maanen home by Rev. L. Ypma.

They farmed their entire married life, the first few years north of Ireton and then near Sioux Center. In 1962 they retired trom farming and moved to 621 2nd Ave. N. E. in Sioux Center.

Ben passed away on August 14, 1986 at the age of 86 years and Alberta is a resident of Pleasant Acres Nursing Home in Hull since November, 1988.

Their five children are: Wilmyna, Mrs. Tunis Jansma of Doon; Arts, Mrs. John Haverhals of Sioux Center; Bernice, Mrs. Peter Rynders of Pontiac, Michigan; Delores, Mrs. John Hoksbergen of Doon; and Alvin of Sioux Center.

Ben Bleyenberg, 86, of Sioux Center died Thursday, Aug. 13, in a Sioux City hospital. Services was at 2 p.m. Saturday in the Protestant Reformed Church of Hull. The Rev. Richard G. Moore officiated. Burial was in Memory Gardens Cemetery in Sioux Center under direction of the Memorial Funeral Home of Sioux Center.

Mr. Bleyenberg was born Jan. 17, 1900 in Ede, the Netherlands and came to the United States in 1902. He attended school at Sioux Center area Christian schools. He married Alberta Van Maanen Feb. 6, 1924 in Sioux Center. The couple lived in the Sioux Center and Ireton areas. Mr. Bleyenberg was a member of the Protestant Reformed Church of Hull.

Survivors include his wife; four daughters, Mrs. Tunis (Wilmyna) Jansma [must be Bonneman GS] and Mrs. John (Delores) Hoksbergen, both of Doon, Mrs. John (Arta) Haverhals of Sioux Center and Mrs. Peter (Bernice) Rynders of Pontiac, Mich.; a son, Elvin of Sioux Center; a brother, Gerrit of Sioux Center; three sisters, Mrs. William (Ida) De Vries, Mrs. Lane (Gertie) Schelling and Mrs. Jake (Bess) Harskamp, all of Sioux Center; 28 grandchildren and 31 great-grandchildren.

Alberta Bleyenberg, 92, of Hull, IA, died on Monday, January 24, 1994, at Pleasant Acres Care Center in Hull. Graveside services, under the direction of the Memorial Funeral Home of Sioux Center, were scheduled for Thursday, January 27, 1994, in Memory Gardens Cemetery at Sioux Center, IA, the Reverend Richard Moore officiating. Due to bad weather, services were rescheduled to Friday, January 28.

Mrs. Bleyenberg was born August 2, 1901, at Sioux Center, the daughter of Bart and Mina Van Maanen. She married Ben Bleyenberg on February 6, 1924, in Sioux Center, and the couple lived in the Sioux Center and Ireton areas. He preceded her in death. Mrs. Bleyenberg had been a resident of the care center since 1988. Mrs. Bleyenberg was a member of the Protestant Reformed Church of Hull.

Surviving are four daughters, Wilmyna (Mrs. Tunis) Bonnema of Sioux Center, Bernice (Mrs. Peter) Rynders of Pontiac, MI, and Delores (Mrs. John) Hoksbergen of Doon, IA; a son and daughter-inlaw, Alvin and Betty Bleyenberg of Sioux City; 30 grandchildren; 57 great-grandchildren; and a sister-inlaw, Elizabeth (Mrs. John) Van Maanen of Rock Rapids, IA.

She was also preceded in death by an infant daughter; a son-in-law, John Haverhals, Jr.; two greatgrandchildren, Brandon Oostra and Veryl De Jong; two brothers; and seven sisters.

Obituary of John Haverhals

John Haverhals, Jr., 53, of Sioux Center died Saturday, June 12 at his home after a long illness.

Mr. Haverhals was born March 9,1929 in Sioux Center. He attended school in Center Township in rural Sioux Center. He was a member of the Lebanon Christian Reformed Church.

He married Arta Bleyenberg on October 17, 1950 in Lebanon, Iowa. After their marriage, the couple lived near Lebanon. They moved to Sioux Center in 1979.

Survivors include his wife; three sons, John E. of Hudson, South Dakota, Barry and Kevin, both of Hawarden, Iowa; two daughters, Mrs. Rod (Lorraine) Hulshof and Miss Lois Haverhals, both of Sioux Center, Iowa; one brother, Adrian of Hawarden, Iowa; three sisters, Mrs. John (Ann) Wiechers of Hawarden, Iowa, Mrs. John (Johanna) Van Kieft and Mrs. Floyd (Marie) Van Kley, both of Sioux Center, Iowa; and seven grandchildren.

Obituary of Elmer Bonnema

Elmer Bonnema, age 92, of Sioux Center, Iowa passed away November 5, 2019 at Royale Meadows Care Center in Sioux Center.

Elmer Bonnema was born on July 3, 1927, in Eagle Township in Sioux County to parents Peter and Leafy Bonnema. He attended country school through eighth grade and then worked with his father on the family farm.

Elmer married Mathilda Mulder in Orange City, Iowa on October 18, 1950. He left the next month for Fort Leonard Wood, Colorado to be inducted into the army. In 1951, Elmer went to serve in Korea as a Jeep repair technician during the Korean War. He returned in November 1952 to work on the family farm. Daughter, Mary, was born while Elmer was serving in Korea. He and Mathilda were blessed with three more children: Lavonne, Myron (stillborn), and Barbara. Mathilda passed away on March 9, 1959, due to a house fire.

Elmer married Jacoba Van Dorp, on August 11, 1961, in Lebanon, Iowa. He farmed on the family farm, raising pigs, cattle, and chickens. He was a lifetime member of the Lebanon Christians Reformed Church where he enjoyed participating in the church's Bible study groups and ministry activities. Elmer served as elder and deacon for many years. One activity he loved was pitching for the Lebanon Softball team. Jacoba passed away January 23, 1990.

Elmer married Arta Haverhals on September 25, 1992, in Lebanon, Iowa. They lived in Sioux Center. He enjoyed playing cards and drinking coffee with the other men at the Senior Activity Center. In 2013, Elmer and Artie moved to Crown Pointe. Artie passed away on July 11, 2018. On August 20, 2019, Elmer moved into Royale Meadows.

He is survived by his three daughters and their families: Mary and Stanley Goslinga of Orange City and children: Jennifer and her husband Joe Trosen, Michael and his wife Elizabeth Goslinga, Rachel and her husband Ryan De Vries; Lavonne and Don Jansen of Grand Rapids, Michigan and children: Brad and his wife Becky Jansen, Heidi Seosenyeng and Lynn and her husband Dykon Pacis; Barbara and Alan Van Beek of Orange City and children: Adam and his wife Marla Van Beek and Emily and her husband Stephan McClure; Also left to cherish his memory are 15 grandchildren; one brother, Harold Bonnema; five stepchildren: Lorraine and Herb Struyk, John and Lorna Haverhals, Barry and Jodi Haverhals, Kevin Haverhals, Lois and Scott Mouw plus many step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, three wives; infant son, Myron; and siblings: Mae and Dick Fedders, Melvin and Gertie Bonnema, Beulah and Clarence Statema, and sister-in­ law, Millie Bonnema.
