VAN MAANEN, JOHN B. AND ELIZABETH (ROZEBOOM)
John B. Van Maanen was the son of Albertus "Bart" Van Maanen and Mina Van Maanen (See their separate story). He was the youngest of ten children, born February 24, 1904. On July 1, 1927 he married Elizabeth Rozeboom. She was born October 5, 1906 to Johannes "Hannes" Rozeboom and Aaltje "Ella" Vande Berg. (See their separate story) She was the youngest of six children.

Both John and Elizabeth grew up and went to school in Sioux Center. They were members of the First Reformed Church. John was a charter member of the Men' s Fellowship. Elizabeth is a member of the Eunice Circle.

John was a farmer but due to an accident had to quit farming and moved to town in 1951. They bought the home that had belonged to John's parents built in 1920 it is located at 104 - lst Ave. NE., Sioux Center. He worked at the Bowling Alley and had a shoe repair business in the later years.
Elizabeth taught rural school for many years and later worked at Van's Jewelry. John and Elizabeth loved to fish, bowl and flower garden. Elizabeth stil lives in her home that they moved into in 1951. John Van Maanen died October 17, 1966.
John and Elizabeth ware the parents of three children. The first child, a baby girl born October 14, 1927 died in infancy. Delbert Van Maanen was born July 9, 1931. On May 29 1958 he married Darlene Ulferts. Delbert is a teacher in Ottumwa Junior College but lives in Oskaloosa, IA. They are the parents of two children: Brenda Lee (Mrs. Eric Svendsen) and Charlene Idelle Van Maanen; Joan Ellen Van Maanen was born September 11; 1932. On June 14, 1954 she married Merle A. Van Roekel. They are farmers and she was a school teacher. They live in Rock Rapids, IA.

Rites for John Van Maanen Here Today
Funeral services were held at the First Reformed church here at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, October 20, for John B. Van Maanen, 62, lifelong resident of this vicinity, who passed away at the Sioux Center Community hospital about 7:30 p.m. Monday. He had been in ailing health for some time and had been in and out of the hospital for treatment for a respitory condition. His last admittance to the hospital was on Monday morning.
Services were conducted by the Rev. Albert Ten Clay and burial was made in the Sioux Center Community cemetery under the direction of Vander Ploeg's Funeral Home. A brief service was held at the Vander Ploeg chapel preceding the service at the church.
Mr. Van Maanen was born in Sioux Center February 24, 1904. He was married to Elizabeth Rozeboom July 1, 1927 and to this union were born a son, Delbert, of Orange City, and two daughters, Joann (Mrs. Merle Van Roekel) of Rock Rapids, and a daughter who died in Infancy.
Other survivors include two grandchildren, six sisters, Jane (Mrs. Case Wassink) of Sioux Center, Hattie (Mrs. Gerben De Jong) of Hull, Grace (Mrs. Conrade Hulstein) of Sioux Center, Mina (Mrs. John Rens) of Hull, Winnie (Mrs. Henry Vis) of Hull and Albertha (Mrs. Ben Bleyenberg) of Sioux Center.
Two sisters and one brother preceded him in death. Mr. Van Maanen had lived in Sioux Center since June of 1951.
He was a charter member of the men's fellowship group of First Reformed church.

Elizabeth Van Maanen, 89, of Sioux Center died Wednesday, May 8, at a Rock Rapids nursing home. Memorial services were at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, May 11, at First Reformed Church in Sioux Center with the Rev. Mark De Witt and the Rev. Arnold Punt officiating. Burial was in Memory Gardens Cemetery in Sioux Center.
Mrs. Van Maanen was born October 5, 1906, in Sioux Center, the daughter of Hannes and Ella (Vande Berg) Rozeboom. She married John B. Van Maanen on July 1, 1927, in Sioux Center. He died October 17, 1966. She taught in the Sioux County rural schools for much of her life. In later years, she enjoyed working at Van's Jewelry In Sioux Center. She moved to Rock Rapids Health Centre May 17. 1993.
Survivors include a son, Dr. Delbert Van Maanen of Oskaloosa; a daughter, Mrs. Merle (JoAnn) Van Roekel of Rock Rapids; a sister-in-law, Bertha Rozeboom of Holland, Michigan; two granddaughters; and three greatgrandchildren.
She was preceded in death by three sisters, two brothers and an infant daughter.

Merle Addison Van Roekel, 88, Rock Rapids, Iowa, died Tuesday, July 24, 2012, at the Tuff Memorial Home in Hills.
A funeral service was Thursday, July 26, at First Reformed Church in Rock Rapids. Burial followed at Riverview Cemetery in Rock Rapids.
Merle Van Roekel was born Feb. 29, 1924, to John and Sarah (Te Grotenhuis) Van Roekel on a farm four miles north of Sioux Center, Iowa. He attended country school at Welcome No. 3 for eight years. He then attended Sioux Center High School and graduated in 1941. After graduation he was drafted into the U.S. Army on April 12, 1945, and served overseas in Okinawa, Japan.
On June 14, 1954, he married JoAnn Van Maanen at Newton Reformed Church in Erie, Ill. The couple lived on the family farm three miles south of Perkins corner. They later bought a farm and made their home a few miles west of Rock Rapids. His wife, JoAnn, died March 5, 2008, and later in the fall of that year he retired from farming and moved to the Tuff Memorial Home in Hills.
He was a member of the First Reformed Church in Rock Rapids, where he served on the consistory and as a Sunday school teacher. He was an antique collector and enjoyed driving antique tractors in parades. He also took part in many toy shows.
Mr. Van Roekel is survived by three brothers, Clinton (Flossie) Van Roekel, George, Iowa, James Van Roekel, Urbandale, Iowa, and Arlin (Alvina) Van Roekel, Waukee, Iowa; a sister-in-law, Edna Van Roekel, Fulda; and other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife JoAnn Van Roekel; two brothers, Gershom and Warren Van Roekel; and two sisters-in-law, Lillian and Erma Jean Van Roekel.

JoAnn Van Roekel, 75, of Rock Rapids died Wednesday, March 5, at the Parkview Manor Nursing Home in Ellsworth, Minnesota.
Funeral services were 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Christian Reformed Church in Rock Rapids, with the Rev. Katie Van Veldhuizen officiating. Burial was at the Riverview cemetery in Rock Rapids.
Mrs. Van Roekel was born September 11, 1932, near Perkins Corner to John B. and Elizabeth (Rozeboom) Van Maanen. She attended the West Branch District Number 4 Country School southeast of Sioux Center.
She furthered her education by going to Northwestern Academy in Orange City where her love for children led her to become a kindergarten teacher. She worked with kindergarten children her entire career.
After graduation from college she taught in Spirit Lake for two years and then Sioux City for two years before being married and moving to the Rock Rapids area.
She married Merle Van Roekel on June 14, 1954, at the Newton Reformed Church in Erie, Illinois.
The couple lived on the family farm three miles south of Perkins Corner. They later bought a farm and made their home a few miles west of Rock Rapids where her husband still lives today.
She continued her teaching career by working with the Rock Rapids school district. She retired from teaching in 1989.
She was a member of First Reformed Church in Rock Rapids and served as a Sunday school teacher for 55 years. She was a member of Grace Circle and served as chairman for a number of years. She was also a member of the bell choir for 14 years.
She liked antiques and collected antique clocks and dishes. She and her husband have taken part in many toy shows over the years. She enjoyed sewing and always had a large garden.
Survivors are her husband; two nieces; brothers-in-law, Clinton (Flossie) Van Roekel of George, James (Erma Jean) Van Roekel of Urbandale and Arlin (Alvina) Van Roekel of Sioux Center; sister-inlaw, Edna Van Roekel of Fulda, Minnesota; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
