Obituaries of Marion and Arta

Marion "Mert" Jans was born on July 20, 1927 in Boyden, IA. He was the son of Jake and Anna (Van Der Vliet) Jans. He lived his youth in Boyden. He was a member of Central Reformed Church of Sioux Center.

Mert served in the U. S. Army from Sept. 27, 1945 to June 21, 1947.

He was united in marriage to Arta Hulstein on Feb. 18, 1949, at Sioux Center, IA. After their marriage, they lived near Hull and Sioux Center. They moved to Jasper, MN on March 1, 1958 and moved back to Sioux Center in Feb. 1986.

He is survived by his wife and five children; a son, Norman Jans of Watertown, S. D, three daughters and their husbands; Verna and Tom Gertgen of Spicer, MN, Anna and Daniel Saue of Wilmar, MN, and Thelma and Tim Bamford of Big Lake, MN; a son and his wife, Calvin and Marsha Jans of Sioux Falls, S. D. and six grandchildren; Tammy and Timothy Gertgen, Rogert and Todd Saue, Jessica Bamford and Morgan Jans. He is also survived by one brother, Jake of Clarkfield, MN, and five sisters; Ida Van Der Zwaag, of Hull, IA, Tillie Walters of Denver, IA. Grace Hibma of Maurice, IA, Angeline Tiedemann of Sibley, IA, and Harriet Vander Zwaag of Sioux Center; a sister-in-law Nellie Jans of Orange City; and a brother-in-law, Ralph Mulder of Lakewood, CA.

He was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters, Henrietta, Carrie Mulder and Coba Kleene, a brother Henry, and three brothers-in-law, Clarence Vander Zwaag, John Kleene and John Walters.


Arta Jans, 90, of Sioux Center, IA died Wednesday, September 4, 2013, at Royale Meadows Care Center of Sioux Center.

A visitation will be held on Friday from 4-8PM, with the family present from 5-7PM at Memorial Funeral Home of Sioux Center. Interment will be held prior to the memorial service in Memory Gardens Cemetery of Sioux Center. A memorial service will be held on Saturday at 11AM at Central Reformed Church with Rev. R. Van Rathbun officiating. In lieu of flowers or gift items, the Jans family prefer memorials be directed to Central Reformed Church or Royale Meadows Care Center, c/o Sioux Center Community Hospital Foundation.

Arta G. Jans was born September 16, 1922 to Cornelius and Tina (Plantage) Hulstein in Hull, Iowa. She attended country school and Sioux Center Community High School.

On February 18, 1949, Arta married Marion Jans at the First Reformed Church in Sioux Center. The couple farmed near Sioux Center and Hull before moving to Jasper, Minnesota in 1958 where they continued to farm until 1972. In February of 1986, Arta and Marion moved back to Sioux Center. Marion preceded Arta in death on July 16, 1992.

Arta was a member of Central Reformed Church of Sioux Center.

She is survived by four children: Norman Jans (special friend, Linda) of Hartford, SD; Verna (Thomas) Gertgen of Spicer, MN; Thelma Bamford (special friend, Mike Koutny) of Alva, FL; Calvin (Marsha) Jans of Pipestone, MN; son-in-law, Daniel Saue of Willmar, MN; her six grandchildren, nine great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband, Arta was preceded in death by a daughter, Anna Saue; her parents and brother and sister-in-law, William and Mary Hulstein.
