Dick Van Maanen Funeral Services Held On Tuesday
The burial service for Mr. Dick Van Maanen, Rock Valley resident, was held here Tuesday at the Valley View cemetery with Rev. Dr. H. Kuiper officiating at the graveside service. Funeral services were held at1:00 p.m. at the home and 1:30 p.m. at the Christian Reformed church. Mr. Van Maanen died April 16, at 11:15 a.m. at the Sacred Heart hospital in Le Mars of a heart ailment.
Dick Van Maanen was born in Gelderland, Netherlands, December 5, 1881. He came to America in 1892. He resided two years near Orange City, 17 years near Sioux Center, 35 years on a farm near Rock Valley and the last two years of his life were spent in the town of Rock Valley.
He was married March 1, 1906 to Gertrude Brunsting and to this union one daughter was born: Gertrude (Mrs. Bert Van't Hul) of near Rock Valley. His wife preceded him in death on September 24, 1907 (sic).
He was remarried on February 23, 1910 to Dena Vrymoet who survives. To this union five children were born, all surviving: Gerrit, John, Henry, Dick and Henrietta (Mrs. John Kempema) and seventeen grandchildren all living near Rock Valley. His step-parents, Mr. and Mrs. Albert De Leeuw, four brothers and seven sisters also survive.

MRS. DENA VAN MAANEN
Mrs. Dena Van Maanen, 85, Rock Valley, died Monday at the Sioux Center nursing home after a long illness. Funeral services were at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Porter funeral home in Rock Valley and at 1:30 p.m. at the First Christian Reformed church at Rock Valley, Rev. John Byker officiated. Burial was in Valley View cemetery.
Mrs. Van Maanen was born June, 1878, at Alton, Iowa. She married Dick Van Maanen February 23, 1910, at Sioux Center. They farmed in the Rock Valley community until retiring in 1947. He died in 1949.
Survivors include four sons, John, Henry, and Dick, all of Rock Valley, and Gerrit of Doon, Iowa; two daughters, Mrs. Bert van 't Hul and Mrs. John Kempema, both of Rock Valley; 25 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

Combined services for Gerrit D. Van Maanen, 75, and Elizabeth "Betty" Van Maanen 74, of Rock Valley, will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, May 27, in the First Christian Reformed Church in Rock Valley. The Rev. Fred Gunnink officiated. Burial was in Valley View Cemetery. Visitation was Monday at the Porter Funeral Home in Rock Valley. The couple died Thursday of injuries suffered in a traffic accident near Rowan.
Van Maanen was born February 22, 1911, In Rock Valley and attended Rock Valley Christian Grade School. He married Elizabeth Baartman February 22, 1938, at Rock Valley. The couple farmed near Hudson, South Dakota and later at rural Doon. They retired in 1980 and moved to Rock Valley. He was a lifetime member of First Christian Reformed Church.
Mrs. Van Maanen, the former Elizabeth Baartman, was born May 3, 1912, in Boyden. She attended rural school near Ireton and Rock Valley Christian Grade School. She married Gerrit D. Van Maanen February 22, 1938, at Rock Valley. She was a member of First Christian Reformed Chruch and Ruth Circle.
The couple is survived by two sons, Delmar or Sheldon and Marvin of Grand Rapids, Michigan; three daughters, Gloria Bovenkamp of Lynden, Washington, Sandra Brouwer of Bronson and Sheryl Van Maanen of Rock Valley, and 14 grandchildren. Van Maanen is also survived by two brothers, John and Dick, both of Rock Valley. Mrs. Van Maanen is also survived by a brother, Herbert also survived by a brother, Herbert of Grand Rapids, Michigan, and two sisters, Harriet Block of Portland, Oregon and Theresa Kooima of Rock Valley.

Henry D. Van Maanen, 69, of Rock Valley died Friday in a hospital in Sioux Falls, S.D. Services were held Monday at 1:30 p.m. in the First Christian Reformed Church in Rock Valley. The Rev. Roger Bultman officiated. Burial was in the Valley View Cemetery under the direction of Porter Funeral Home.
Mr. Van Maanen was born Dec. 12, 1914, in rural Rock Valley and attended Rock Valley Christian Schools. He farmed in the Rock Valley area until 1980 when he retired and moved into town. He was a member of the First Christian Reformed Church and was a past deacon of the church.
Survivors include three brothers, Gerrit, John and Dick, all of Rock Valley and one sister, Mrs. Bert (Gertrude) Van't Hul of Rock Valley.

Dick Van Maanen, 82. of Rock Valley died on Tuesday, December 22, at Hegg Memorial Hospital in Rock Valley. Services were on Thursday at First Christian Reformed Chtirch in Rock Valley, with the Rev. C. Eric Fennema officiating. Burial was in Valley View Cemetery.
Van Maanen was born on August 17, 1916, near Rock Valley, the son of Dick and Dena (Vrymoet) Van Maanen. He attended Christian School in Rock Valley. Van Maanen served in the U.S. Army for three and one-half years during World War II, as a military policeman, stationed in Italy and Africa.
He married Henrietta Postma on February 14, 1947, near Rock Valley. The couple farmed in the Rock Valley area, until retiring to Rock Valley in 1980. He was a member of First Christian Reformed Church.
Survivors are his wife; a son and his wife, Dennis and Audrey of Hull; three daughters, Geneva and her husband, Bob Tronnes, of Minneapolis, Audrey and her husband, Earl Schuld, of Woodstock, Minnesota, and Lorna Van Maanen of Rock Valley; 11 grandchildren; and three great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by three brothers, Gerrit D., John D. and Henry D.; and two sisters, Gertie Van't Hul and Henrietta Kempema.

Mrs. Van Maanen was born February 11, 1919, to Richard and Jennie (Abma) Postma in Rock Valley. She was raised on a farm near Rock Valley and attended Rock Valley Christian School. She worked at Kooiman's General Store until her marriage to Dick Van Maanen on February 14, 1947, near Rock Valley, they farmed north of Rock Valley until retiring to Rock valley in 1980. They later moved to Four Seasons Retirement Center. He died December 22, 1998, and she later moved to Valley Manor. She was a lifelong member of First Christian Reformed Church in Rock Valley.
Survivors include a son, Dennis (Audrey) Van Maanen of Hull; daughters, Geneva (Bob) Tronnes of Minneapolis, Audrey (Earl) Schuld of Woodstock, Minnesota, and Lorna Van Maanen of Rock Valley; brothers, Martin (Katie) Postma and Donald (Lois) Postma, all of Rock Valley, (Clarence (Laura) Postma of Orange City, Richard (Linda) Postma and Robert (Sherril) Postma, all of Knoxville, and Stanley (Sharon) Postma of Aloha, Oregon; sisters, Marian Altena of Pipestone, Minnesota, Shirley (Carl) Vander Schaaf of Pella and Carol (Vito) Puopolo of Alta Loma, California; 11 grandchildren; and nine greatgrandchildren. Last rites held for Bert Van't Hul Tuesday, Oct. 13
Funeral services for Bert Van't Hul, Rock Valley, were held Tuesday, Oct. 13 at 1:00 p.m. at the Porter Funeral home and at 1:30 p.m. at the First Christian Reformed church at Rock Valley with Rev Jack J. Mathies of Hull officiating. Burial was at Valley View cemetery, Rock Valley. Mr. Van't Hul died Saturday, Oct. 10 at the St Joseph's hospital, Sioux City, after a short illness. He reached the age of 61 years.
Mr Van't Hul was born Oct. 9, 1903 on a farm near Perkins. He married Gertrude Van Maanen Oct. 11, 1928. Mr. Van't Hul lived and farmed on the same farm for 58 years.
Survivors include the widow and four sons, Lawrence, Harlan of Rock Valley, Orville of Hull, and Junior at home; six daughters, Dorothy (Mrs George Van Beek) Inwood,, Albertha (Mrs Louis. Altena) Doon, Harriet (Mrs Marvin Vande Kamp) Rock Valley, Geraldine (Mrs Norman Vande Vegte) Inwood, and Joyce and Joanne at home; 15 grandchildren, four brothers and one sister.

The couple farmed east of Rock Valley until his death October 10, 1964. She moved into Rock Valley in 1965 and to Valley Manor Nursing Home in 1982. Mrs. Van't Hul was a member of the First Christian Reformed Church and Martha Circle of the church.

Van Maanen was born July 15, 1913, near Rock Valley, the son of Dick and Dena (Vrymoet) Van Maanen. He married Jeanette Kempema February 23, 1938, in Rock Valley. The couple farmed near Rock Valley until 1981 when they retired and moved to Rock Valley. He moved to Valley Manor on December 8, 1992. Van Maanen was a member and past deacon of First Christian Reformed Church.
Survivors include his wife; two daughters and their husbands. Donna and Glen Tilstra of Inwood and Joanne and Dick D. Dirksen of Rock Valley, a brother, Dick Van Maanen of Rock Valley; nine grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
He was preceded In death by a daughter, Marlys Van Maanen; two brothers, Henry and Gcrrit Van Maanen; two sisters, Gertrude Van't Hul and Henrietta Kempema; and two infant grandchildren.

Jeanette Van Maanen, 83, of Rock Valley died Monday, July 31, at Valley Manor Nursing Home in Rock Valley. Services were at First Christian Reformed Church in Rock Valley on Thursday, the Rev. C. Eric Fennema officiating. Burial was in Valley View Cemetery in Rock Valley.
Born on April 26, 1912, in Sioux County, to Raymond and Minnie (Vedders) Kempema. She married John D. Van Maanen on February 23, 1938, in Rock Valley, The couple farmed near Rock Valley until 1981, when they retired to Rock Valley. He died on April 3, 1994 and she moved to Valley Manor on July 6, 1995.
Survivors include two daughters and their husbands, Donna and Glen Tilstra of Inwood and Joanne and Dick Dirksen of Rock Valley; two brothers, Herman and John Kempema, both of Rock Valley; two sisters, Mrs. Martin (Jennie) Kooistra of Inwood and Mrs. Pete (Freda) Groeneweg of Colorado Springs, Colorado; nine grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.
She was also preceded in death by a daughter, Marlys; two infant grandchildren; four brothers, Ernest, Charles, Henry and Clarence and a sister, Mrs. Daniel Kooistra.

Mrs. Kempema, the former Henrietta Van Maanen, was born April 29, 1918, in Rock Valley, and attended Rock Valley Christian School. She married John Kempema Feb. 26, 1941, at Rock Valley. They farmed in the Rock.Valley area until 1981 when they moved into town.
Survivors include her husband; two sons, Roger and Norman, both of Rock Valley; one daughter, Mrs. John (Eldine) Den Boer of Dell Rapids, S.D.; four brothers, Gerrit, John, Henry and Dick, all of Rock Valley; one sister Mrs. Bert (Gertrude) Van't Hul of Rock Valley, and eight grandchildren.

John was born August 29, 1910 in Rock Valley, son of Riemer and Hermina (Vedders) Kempema. As a child he lived with his parents on farms around Sioux County, and attended rural-county schools. In 1936, he ventured to California working 1 year at General Motors. He returned to the Rock Valley area, worked as a farm hand for a while, and then started farming on his own.
John married Henrietta Van Maanen on February 26, 1941 in Rock Valley. Together they farmed northwest of Rock Valley until 1981, at which time John and Henrietta retired to Rock Valley. John continued to work on the farm in his spare time for many years. John was a lifelong member of the First Christian Reformed Church, where he served on the Council as Deacon and Elder. He always had time for his neighbors and friends, both in helping them and visiting them. He often spent his evenings reading books and novels, usually concentrating on books of all the wars our country was involved in. John enjoyed his family and shared a real appreciation when his children and grandchildren visited him. Survivors include one daughter, Eldine (John) Den Boer of Dell Rapids, SD; two sons, Roger (Hilaine) Kempema, Norman (Deb) Kempema all of Rock Valley; one brother Herman (Henrietta) Kempema of Rock Valley; 10 grandchildren, Barb Kriens, Laura Vortherms, Kevin Den Boer, Douglas Kempema, Cassandra Ping, Joshua Kempema, Sara Nieuwsma, Jillian Blankespoor, Meghan Kempema, Taylor Kempema; 10 great-grandchildren.
In addition to his wife, Henrietta who died December 25, 1983, John was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Henry, Charlie, Ernest, and Clarence; four sisters, Jennie Kooistra, Frieda Groeneweg, Fannie Kooistra, and Jeanette Van Maanen.
